Cases of a potentially deadly fungus have been detected in 23 states so far this year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).As of July 18, there have been 3,130 cases of Candida auris (C. auris) identified. This is consistent with the 3,348 figure detected at the same time last year.Texas has recorded the most cases with 706, followed by Michigan with 503 and Illinois with 366.An increasing number of cases does not mean the fungus is transmitting at a more rapid pace than usual. However, those with weakened immune systems or who are immunocompromised are at risk of hard-to-treat infections.Additionally, nursing home patients or hospital patients who have or have had lines and tubes in their body -- such as a catheter or a breathing tube -- are also at high risk.Several strains of C. auris infections are resistant to at least one type of anti-fungal medication if not several.A CDC analysis published earlier this year of 8,033 C. auris samples in 2022 and 2023 found that more than 95% were resistant to fluconazole, a first-line antifungal treatment; 15% were resistant to the prescription antifungal medication amphotericin B; 1% were resistant to the antifungal medication echinocandins, and fewer than 1% were resistant to all three antifungal drug classes.Most infections can be treated with echinocandins, according to the CDC.Studies are limited but the mortality rate of C. auris is estimated to be between 30% and 60%.Because most patients who contract C. auris were already ill, "when patients with C. auris die, it is hard to know how much C. auris contributed to their death compared to other pre-existing illnesses," according to the CDC.

Autoridades de España confirmaron que ya entró en vigor la Ley de Bienestar Animal, la contempla sanciones millonarias para las personas que no cuiden correctamente a sus mascotas, particularmente a perros o gatos. En la nueva normal, se establece que estos animales no pueden vivir de forma permanente en lugares como patios, balcones, terrazas, azoteas, sótanos, o espacios similares, al considerar que no reúnen las condiciones adecuadas para garantizar su bienestar.Aunque el anuncio ha generado dudas entre los propietarios, la ley no impide que un perro o un gato salga al patio para jugar, descansar o permanecer algunas horas durante el día. Lo que estipula la ley es que los animales de compañía no pueden estar en dichos espacios de forma permanente, ya que, si durante una inspección se detecta esa situación, el dueño podría enfrentar un procedimiento administrativo y una multa de acuerdo con la gravedad del caso.La medida forma parte de la Ley 7/2023 de protección de los derechos y el bienestar de los animales, impulsada para mejorar las condiciones en las que viven las mascotas y combatir prácticas consideradas de maltrato o abandono. Con esta legislación, las autoridades buscan evitar que perros y gatos permanezcan aislados en espacios reducidos, expuestos al calor, al frío, la lluvia u otras condiciones que puedan afectar su salud física y emocional.Además de contemplar multas económicas, la normativa permite a las autoridades iniciar carpetas de investigación cuando se detecten incumplimientos relacionados con el bienestar animal. Las multas, según explican las autoridades, dependerán de las circunstancias de cada caso, el tiempo que el animal haya permanecido en esas condiciones y otros factores.¿Qué dice la ley sobre tener perros y gatos en el patio? La normativa ya fue publicada de forma oficial | Captura de pantalla La legislación española señala que los dueños de mascotas no pueden mantener de forma habitual o permanente a perros y gatos en patios, terrazas, balcones, azoteas, trasteros, sótanos, vehículos o cualquier otro espacio similar que no garantice unas condiciones adecuadas para vivir. Las autoridades han precisado que los perros y gatos pueden salir al patio para correr, tomar el sol o permanecer unas horas bajo supervisión sin que ello represente una infracción. Las sanciones serán para quienes usen ese espacio como el lugar donde el animal viva de manera continua, duerma todos los días o permanezca aislado durante largos periodos sin los cuidados necesarios.La norma también obliga a los propietarios a garantizar alimentación, agua limpia, atención veterinaria, protección frente a temperaturas extremas y un entorno que permita cubrir las necesidades físicas y de comportamiento de cada mascota. El incumplimiento de estas obligaciones también puede dar lugar a sanciones administrativas previstas en la legislación española.¿De cuánto son las multas? La medida busca garantizar una vida saludable para las mascotas | Archivo La Ley de Bienestar Animal clasifica las infracciones en leves, graves y muy graves, con multas que aumentan conforme a la conducta detectada. Las infracciones leves contemplan sanciones que van de 11 mil a 220 mil pesos mexicanos; las graves pueden castigarse con multas de 220 mil hasta 1.1 millones de pesos; mientras que las muy graves alcanzan 4.4 millones de pesos, de acuerdo con el equivalente aproximado de los montos fijados en euros por la legislación española. Las autoridades españolas insisten en que la norma no impide que las mascotas disfruten del patio o de otros espacios exteriores, sino  que busca asegurar que los animales de compañía vivan en condiciones dignas y adecuadas. Por ello, recomiendan que los animales permanezcan dentro del hogar o en áreas preparadas para cubrir sus necesidades, evitando que pasen la mayor parte de su vida aislados en patios, azoteas o balcones.
