All equipment is being removed from four of the program's five sites, stretching from the Gulf of Alaska to the Irminger Sea between Greenland and Iceland, and down to the waters of North Carolina. The network cost $386 million to build over a decade and had been regarded as one of the most advanced ocean-observing systems in the world. The UK's Met Office describes El Niño more broadly as a naturally occurring weather cycle in the Pacific Ocean characterized by unusually hot waters near the equator, which changes the circulation of air in the atmosphere, with effects that ricochet outward to affect weather and climate patterns around the globe.This particular episode reportedly began building in June 2026 and is projected to peak in November, with sea temperatures potentially reaching around 4°C above average. Nigeria alone is forecast to see 31,400 deaths, contributing to an estimated 66,800 across Africa's wider Sahel region. Sudan is projected to record 17,500 deaths, with 10,000 forecast in Niger and 8,000 in Chad. The Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia are collectively expected to see around 19,400 deaths, with a further 19,300 forecast in Indonesia. While north-western Europe (including the UK) is likely to experience wetter and stormier conditions this coming autumn and early winter, according to the Met Office.Super El Nino (Getty)In mid-September 2026, Hurricane Polo began as a tropical disturbance off the Pacific coast of Mexico.Then by 20 September it was organised enough to qualify as a tropical depression, and by the next day it was a tropical storm.From there, Polo launched into a period of 'rapid intensification' NASA said, describing the storm's rate of intensification and strength as 'jaw-dropping'.The deadly storm exploded into one of the most intense hurricanes ever measured in the eastern Pacific. At its peak, Polo was a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph.Hurricane Polo is just off Mexico (Getty)"Polo went through a period of what can only be described as explosively rapid intensification," said Gary Partyka, an atmospheric scientist with the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). "This was rapid, rapid intensification."Researchers estimated winds of nearly 180 miles per hour, making Polo the third-strongest storm on record in the eastern Pacific by maximum sustained winds, and the fastest on record to go from a tropical depression to a category 5 storm.Travel warning issuedThe hurricane is now barreling towards the Baja California region of Mexico. Heavy rain is expected to continue during the week of 21 September and may cause life-threatening flooding and landslides. A tropical cyclone warning is in place," a warning read."Monitor local and international weather updates, including US National Hurricane Center and Mexican Meteorological Service. Follow advice from local authorities and your tour operator."The hurricane is forecast to move towards Baja California on the weekend of 26 and 27 September. Charles Smith's Controversial Past Resurfaces After UÇK Leaders' Verdict

-Gjyqtari Charles L. Smith III, i cili kryesoi trupin gjykues që më 16 shtator 2026 shpalli aktgjykimin ndaj Hashim Thaçit, Kadri Veselit, Rexhep Selimit dhe Jakup Krasniqit, nuk është një emër i panjohur për Kosovën. Përpara se të merrte detyrën në Dhomat e Specializuara të Kosovës në Hagë, Smith kishte shërbyer për disa vite në Kosovë si gjyqtar ndërkombëtar i EULEX-it. Pikërisht kjo përvojë e mëparshme në sistemin e drejtësisë në Kosovë e ka rikthyer emrin e tij në vëmendjen publike, veçanërisht pas vendimit të 16 shtatorit, i cili solli gjithsej 81 vjet burgim për katër ish-krerët e UÇK-së. Sipas Dhomave të Specializuara, Thaçi dhe Krasniqi u dënuan me nga 25 vjet, Veseli me 18 vjet dhe Selimi me 13 vjet burgim. Aktgjykimi është i shkallës së parë dhe nuk është ende i formës së prerë.VAZHDO LEXIMIN ME POSHTE!Por historia e Smithit në Kosovë nuk lidhet vetëm me vitet e fundit dhe me procesin në Hagë. Nga viti 2010 deri më 2013, ai shërbeu si gjyqtar ndërkombëtar i EULEX-it dhe gjatë kësaj periudhe ishte i përfshirë edhe në strukturat drejtuese të gjyqtarëve të misionit evropian. Kjo periudhë është veçanërisht e rëndësishme për shkak se emri i tij u përmend më vonë në një prej dëshmive më të debatueshme të dhëna nga ish-gjyqtari i EULEX-it, Malcolm Simmons. Simmons, i cili kishte shërbyer gjithashtu në misionin evropian dhe kishte qenë kryetar i Asamblesë së Gjyqtarëve të EULEX-it, ngriti publikisht pretendime për ndërhyrje politike dhe presione brenda sistemit të drejtësisë ku shërbente. Në këtë kontekst, ai përmendi edhe Charles Smithin.Një prej rasteve që Simmons e lidhi me këto pretendime ishte procesi i njohur si “Kleçka”, në të cilin ndër të akuzuarit ishte edhe Fatmir Limaj. Sipas versionit të paraqitur nga Simmons, çështja kishte marrë një rëndësi të veçantë politike brenda EULEX-it dhe ai pretendoi se kishte marrë komunikime nga nivele të larta të misionit lidhur me mënyrën dhe shpejtësinë me të cilën duhej të procedohej rasti. Në deklarimet e tij, Simmons përmendi një email të datës 29 janar 2013, të cilin tha se e kishte marrë nga Charles Smith, i cili në atë kohë ishte kryetar i Asamblesë së Gjyqtarëve të EULEX-it. Pikërisht përmbajtja e pretenduar e këtij komunikimi është bërë një prej elementeve kryesore të polemikës rreth emrit të Smithit.Sipas Simmonsit, në atë komunikim Smith kishte kërkuar që çështja “Kleçka” të dërgohej për gjykim sa më shpejt të ishte e mundur, duke përmendur, sipas Simmonsit, “një numër arsyesh, shumica prej tyre politike”. Simmons e interpretoi këtë si tregues se çështja nuk po trajtohej vetëm mbi bazën e konsideratave juridike, por se kishte edhe faktorë politikë që ndikonin në mënyrën se si EULEX-i e shihte atë proces. Këto janë pretendime të Simmonsit dhe nuk duhet të paraqiten si një konstatim gjyqësor se Smith ka ndërhyrë politikisht në një proces. Megjithatë, fakti që një ish-gjyqtar i EULEX-it e ka lidhur publikisht emrin e Smithit me këto pretendime e bën historinë e tij të mëparshme në Kosovë pjesë të debatit që është rikthyer pas aktgjykimit të Hagës.Simmons shkoi edhe më tej në deklarimet e tij. Sipas versionit që ai ka dhënë publikisht, pas caktimit të tij në trupin gjykues të rastit “Kleçka”, ai kishte marrë udhëzime dhe më pas kishte pretenduar se Smith i kishte thënë se misioni varej nga rezultati i kësaj çështjeje. Simmons pretendoi gjithashtu se ishte krijuar përshtypja se EULEX-i priste dënime dhe se pozita e tij e punës mund të rrezikohej nëse të pandehurit nuk do të dënoheshin. Këto deklarime janë pjesë e dëshmisë dhe versionit të Simmonsit për atë që ai përjetoi gjatë kohës së tij në EULEX dhe nuk përbëjnë, në vetvete, një konstatim të pavarur gjyqësor ndaj Smithit.Sipas Simmonsit, shqetësimet e tij nuk mbetën vetëm brenda strukturave të EULEX-it. Ai ka deklaruar se më 11 korrik 2013 i kishte shkruar Ambasadës së Mbretërisë së Bashkuar në Kosovë dhe se më pas ishte takuar me zëvendësambasadorin britanik për të diskutuar pretendimet e tij rreth ndërhyrjes së zyrtarëve të lartë të EULEX-it në proceset gjyqësore. Simmons ka thënë se për shkak të detyrimeve të tij ligjore nuk mund të zbulonte të gjitha detajet e asaj bisede. Kështu, pjesa më e madhe e informacionit mbi këtë episod mbështetet në deklarimet e tij dhe duhet lexuar duke bërë dallimin mes asaj që Simmons pretendoi dhe asaj që është provuar apo vendosur nga një gjykatë.Rasti “Kleçka” kishte qenë ndër proceset më të ndjeshme të periudhës së EULEX-it në Kosovë. Për këtë arsye, pretendimi se konsideratat politike mund të kishin ndikuar në mënyrën se si trajtohej një çështje penale ishte veçanërisht serioz. Në versionin e Simmonsit, çështja lidhej jo vetëm me drejtësinë në Kosovë, por edhe me interesat e Bashkimit Evropian dhe marrëdhëniet e tij me Serbinë. Ai pretendoi se pikërisht kjo lidhje politike ishte përmendur në komunikimet që kishte marrë. Megjithatë, këto janë interpretime dhe pretendime të bëra nga Simmons, dhe jo përfundime të nxjerra nga aktgjykimi i vitit 2026 ndaj Thaçit, Veselit, Selimit dhe Krasniqit.Sot, më shumë se një dekadë pas këtyre ngjarjeve, emri i Charles Smith është sërish në qendër të vëmendjes në Kosovë, por këtë herë për shkak të rolit të tij në procesin ndaj ish-krerëve të UÇK-së. Dhomat e Specializuara njoftuan se trupi gjykues II, i kryesuar nga Smith dhe i përbërë edhe nga gjyqtarët Christoph Barthe dhe Guénaël Mettraux, gjeti katër të akuzuarit fajtorë për krimet e luftës të arrestimit dhe ndalimit të paligjshëm ose arbitrar, trajtimit mizor, torturës dhe vrasjes. Në të njëjtën kohë, paneli i liroi nga akuzat për gjashtë pika të krimeve kundër njerëzimit, ndërsa aktgjykimi mbetet i apelueshëm.Sipas përmbledhjes së aktgjykimit, paneli konstatoi përgjegjësi penale për arrestimin dhe ndalimin e paligjshëm të të paktën 385 personave, trajtim mizor të të paktën 49 personave, torturimin e të paktën 303 personave dhe vrasjen e 96 personave. Gjykata theksoi gjithashtu se çështja ishte e kufizuar te veprimet dhe përgjegjësia e katër të akuzuarve dhe nuk përbënte gjykim mbi legjitimitetin e UÇK-së apo qëllimin e saj për Kosovën e pavarur. Këto janë gjetje të trupit gjykues në aktgjykimin e shkallës së parë dhe jo thjesht deklarime politike.Pas shpalljes së vendimit, debati për integritetin e gjyqtarëve është rikthyer edhe në Kosovë. Fatmir Limaj, i cili ishte vetë i akuzuar në procesin “Kleçka”, e përmendi sërish përvojën e tij me proceset e EULEX-it dhe foli për atë që ai e konsideron si problem të integritetit të gjyqtarëve. Limaj tha se kishte përjetuar raste të tilla edhe më herët dhe se çështja e karakterit dhe integritetit personal të një gjyqtari duhet të merret seriozisht. Deklaratat e tij janë pjesë e reagimit politik dhe publik pas aktgjykimit dhe nuk përbëjnë një konstatim të ri gjyqësor mbi Smithin.Në këtë mënyrë, dy periudha të ndryshme të karrierës së Charles Smithit janë bashkuar në debatin aktual: vitet kur ai ishte gjyqtar i EULEX-it në Kosovë dhe periudha e tij e tanishme si kryesues i trupit gjykues në Hagë. Në njërën anë qëndrojnë pretendimet e ish-gjyqtarit Malcolm Simmons për komunikime dhe presione të pretenduara politike gjatë trajtimit të rastit “Kleçka”; në anën tjetër qëndron një aktgjykim i vitit 2026 i nxjerrë nga një panel gjyqësor në një proces që zgjati më shumë se tre vjet dhe përfshiu dëgjimin e 134 dëshmitarëve. Updated 16:33 26 Sep 2026 GMT+1Published 13:04 26 Sep 2026 GMT+1Millions more Prime members are being swept into a revised FTC settlement worth $2.5 billion.Amazon is about to start paying out to millions more Prime members - and if you've had a subscription any time in the last six years, you might be one of them.From Thursday, October 1, the retail giant will begin sending fresh refunds tied to its settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), according to WAFB.The payout could be worth as much as $200, and eligible customers won't need to lift a finger to claim it.The cash forms part of a $2.5 billion settlement Amazon struck in 2025, after the FTC accused the company of signing customers up to Prime without clear consent, and making it needlessly difficult for others to cancel once they were in. As part of the deal, Amazon agreed to hand back up to $1.5 billion to consumers, on top of a separate $1 billion civil penalty.AdvertAmazon reached a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC in 2025 over its Prime enrollment and cancellation practices. They must be a Prime member based in the US, have signed up through one of the enrollment processes the FTC took issue with (or tried and failed to cancel via Amazon's online system) between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, and have used no more than 20 Prime perks - think Prime Video or Prime Music - in any single 12-month stretch since joining.That last condition is key to why the pool of eligible customers is expanding now.A federal court has approved changes to the settlement that widen who qualifies and lift the maximum payout from $51 to $200. The October 1 rollout specifically targets people who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits in a 12-month period - a group that missed out on the earlier rounds of payments.Amazon has already paid out more than $845 million in refunds as of September, per the FTC, but this next wave is expected to reach far more subscribers than previous phases combined.The maximum refund per eligible Amazon Prime customer has been raised from $51 to $200. (Getty Stock Image)Do I need to file a claim to get the Amazon refund?The FTC has confirmed that qualifying payments will be issued automatically, so there's no form to fill in and no notice to respond to. Money will land via PayPal, Venmo, or a mailed check, and anyone who receives one is advised to accept or cash it within 60 days.It's also worth noting the $200 figure isn't necessarily what everyone will see land in their account straight away. Refunds issued in earlier phases were capped at $51, and Amazon may top those up by a further $149 later on to bring them in line with the new maximum. Those supplemental payments, where owed, are due to go out by April 2027.The FTC has used the announcement to flag a warning too: anyone claiming to represent Amazon or the FTC and asking for payment or personal details in order to 'release' a refund is running a scam.
