Venezuela's Diosdado Cabello Sparks Outrage After Clashing with US Rescuers

MIAMI — Venezuela’s dreaded interior minister Diosdado Cabello — who is a wanted by the US — has been slammed as a “thug” after videos showed him berating and hindering American rescuers in the country, as the death toll from last week’s twin earthquakes surged above 1,700.As the catastrophe entered its fifth day Monday, authorities in the South American country said 5,000 people had been injured and 23,000 were impacted by the staggering temblors.Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello (center) tours the area struck by earthquakes in La Guaira, Venezuela. AP Photo/Matias DelacroixUS officials have confirmed at least three Americans were killed in the twin 7.2 and 7.5-magnitude quakes that rocked the north of the country on Wednesday evening. A dozen US citizens are missing.US Marines and civilian search and rescue teams have deployed to help find survivors among the rubble.Members of the elite USA-01 team, who mobilized from Virginia, managed to pull a nine-month-old baby and her mother alive from a collapsed building after they were trapped under rubble for nearly three days.Despite their heroics, a viral video posted on social media showed Venezuela’s interior minister Diosdado Cabello shouting and waving his arms about at what appears to be a group of American rescuers.US rescue workers are seen in Caraballeda, La Guaira State, Venezuela on June 29, 2026, following twin earthquakes. Carlos A. Gimenez (R-Fla.), a former firefighter, called for US authorities to snatch Cabello after the outburst.“While the US increases its presence in #Venezuela, we should pick-up thug Diosdado Cabello and bring him to justice so he can stop impeding the distribution of aid to those impacted by the earthquake,” Gimenez commented on X in response to the video.Rescue workers conduct search operations in an area affected by the earthquake. Ronald Pena R/EPA/ShutterstockRodriguez, who previously served as Maduro’s vice president, has publicly thanked Trump for his support following the earthquakes. The fallout from the earthquakes is, however, threatening to open a new front for Venezuela’s beleaguered socialist ruling class.Videos circulated over the weekend on social media showed frustrated residents accusing military personnel of offering little assistance to civilians carrying out search and rescue operations.“Emotionally, the country is deeply shaken,” Venezuelan pollster Ruben Chirinos said, according to the Miami Herald.“But the anger toward the government’s response is on another level.“The two biggest sources of anger are clear.“First, the obstruction of aid organized by ordinary citizens.“Second, the inaction – or worse – of the armed forces.”

Paraguay's Stunning Win Over Germany Leaves Fans in Shock New

Paraguay's Stunning Win Over Germany Leaves Fans in Shock

Manuel Neuer of Germany concedes a goal to Paraguay during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round Of 32 match between Germany and Paraguay at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on June 29, 2026. Robert Cianflone/Getty ImagesAfter 120 minutes of play and six rounds of penalty kicks, Paraguay sends Germany home and survives to the next round of the World Cup.The match outside Boston on June 29 was the first of the Round of 32 to go into extra time with a 1–1 tie. The score remained unchanged at the end of the two 15-minute halves, after the match officials called back what would have been Germany’s go-ahead goal, determining the goalkeeper was fouled. The South American underdogs held on to win 4–3 in penalty kicks. This marks Germany’s first loss in penalty kicks, coming into the match 4–0, and the first-ever win on penalties seen in the World Cup’s round of 32 teams.Paraguayan President Santiago Peña declared June 30 a national holiday to commemorate the victory.Paraguay’s goalkeeper, meanwhile, secured that win having only faced one previous penalty kick beforehand.Related StoriesParaguay struck first off a header from Julio Enciso in the 42nd minute, but Germany’s Kai Havertz found the equalizer with his own header under coverage at the 54th minute. After that goal, Germany appeared to retain the momentum, but Paraguay’s defense literally stood in the way of the net. Five of Germany’s eight shots in the second half were blocked, and Paraguay blocked eight shots overall.Germany got six of their 21 shots on goal, and Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill stopped all attempts but one.The match was also physical and emotional. Paraguay earned 12 fouls, with six coming in the last third of the match, and two yellow cards. Germany was handed 18 fouls by the referees, two of which were yellow cards. Officials also handed yellow cards to both teams’ benches. The result of the two previous knockout matches—Canada vs. South Africa and Brazil vs. Japan—was decided on a goal late into the allotted stoppage time, but Canada and Brazil both took the win in regulation time.Germany’s bout with Paraguay was the first of the knockout round to go beyond that.World Cup extra time features two 15-minute halves, plus stoppage time, with a short break in between. Germany and Paraguay waited until the extra time to make some of their substitutions and make last-minute changes to who would have to take penalty kicks.World Cup penalty kicks begin with a best-of-five competition, and then, if a victor is still not declared, penalties continue in a “sudden death” format. That best-of-five phase ended in a three-three draw with goals from Germany’s Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Nadiem Amiri, as well as Paraguay’s Mauricio, Gustavo Gomez, and Matias Galarza. Gill and German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer both made two saves.Sudden death ended with a clear miss over the net from Germany’s Jonathan Tah, and a goal from Jose Canale.Paraguay moves on to the round of 16, where they will play either France or Sweden in Philadelphia at 5 p.m. on July 4.

Supreme Court Sparks Debate After Refusing New York Vaccine Mandate Case

The Supreme Court in Washington on June 23, 2026. Madalina Kilroy/The Epoch TimesSupreme Court justices on June 29 declined to hear an appeal of a ruling that upheld New York’s not allowing religious exemptions for its mandate that healthcare workers take COVID-19 vaccines.Six of nine justices declined to consider the case. They did not say why.At least four justices must agree to review an appeal for it to move forward.Justice Neil Gorsuch, joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, said that the court should have reviewed the case.New York’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care workers originally included exemptions on medical or religious grounds. But when Kathy Hochul became governor, she rescinded religious exemptions, leading to the termination of a number of workers, some of whom lodged a lawsuit against the state and their former employers.A federal judge ruled against the plaintiffs. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit then concluded that even though plaintiffs may have plausibly alleged violations of employee rights under the Civil Rights Act, it needed to uphold the lower court decision because granting religious exemptions “would have required the Private Defendants to violate the state regulation” and in turn subjected the employers to financial penalties or suspensions of their operating licenses.Related StoriesUnder Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, employers do not need to offer reasonable accommodation for employee religious views if doing so would cause the employers to face “an undue hardship,” and such a hardship was faced because of the potential violation of state law and the repercussions that would follow, the appeals court said.Gorsuch said he has doubts about the appeals court posture, which applies even if the law in question is unconstitutional.“It seems to me that state law cannot control whether an employer faces an ‘undue hardship’ for purposes of federal antidiscrimination laws, just like it cannot conclusively resolve what constitutes a ’reasonable accommodation‘ or which criteria are ’necessary' for admission to a public accommodation,” he wrote.“To hold otherwise would appear to leave States free to strip individuals of the protections guaranteed by so many federal civil rights statutes ... all by the simple expedient of proscribing accommodations those statutes promise. Rather than federal civil rights laws standing supreme over contrary state law, they would more nearly bow before it.”Lawyers for defendants did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.“This is a simple case that the court should take up because it presents a recurring and ongoing issue where state law, even unconstitutional as this one is, can be used to trump federal law,” Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, who has been representing the plaintiffs, told The Epoch Times. He added, “It’s a tragedy that the court didn’t take this case to remedy this unconstitutional law and a terrible decision by the court of appeals.”
