Powerful waves from former Hurricane Rachel tore apart sections of the Long Beach Peninsula boardwalk Friday morning, leaving one home on the verge of collapsing into the ocean.
KTLA’s helicopter captured chunks of the shattered boardwalk floating out to sea as high tide hit shortly after 9 a.m.
Floodwaters swamped nearby streets and patios as erosion continued to undermine beachfront homes.
“This is easily the most damage I have seen over the past couple of weeks,” KTLA’s Rich Prickett said.
“Now the entire boardwalk is just starting to shred away, and now some of these homes are being impacted even more severely.”
Officials warn even worse conditions are ahead.
Fire officials said one home was red-tagged Thursday and two others received yellow tags.
All were unoccupied, and crews were assessing further damage Friday to decide if evacuations might be necessary.
The threat could intensify Sunday night into Monday, when stronger swells and high tides are expected to combine.
The National Weather Service expects Monday’s storm surge to reach about 7 feet.
