Terrifying Shark Encounter at Jones Beach Leaves Swimmer in Shock

A swimmer’s “bone” was left exposed after what lifeguards believe was a shark attack at Jones Beach Friday afternoon, sources told The Post.

In a scene right out of “Jaws,” the beast chomped on the man’s foot around 12 p.m. at the state park’s Field 6 as the Blue Angels Fourth of July holiday air show soared overhead, witnesses said.

“He came running over to our lifeguard stand … his foot was bleeding and he was saying, ‘I got bit, I got bit! I don’t want to look,'” said lifeguard Kate Maio, who was sitting on the stand and treated the victim.

“The man who got bit said that it felt like a jaw-biting motion and that it went clean through.”

The wound was a single, deep gash that sliced along the man’s toes, exposing the white bone beneath, the lifeguard said.

Maio’s partner jumped from the stand and wrapped the man’s foot in a shirt like a tourniquet, but the slow bleeding suddenly started gushing.

“It was bleeding through the shirt,” she said.

“It was crazy, but these things happen.”

The man had been swimming at the edge of the green flags — which designate the swimmable areas of the beach.

That means he was close to where fishermen set up shop on the shores, Maio explained.

EMS responded to the scene and took him to an area hospital, where lifeguards expect him to make a full recovery.

The man did not see the shark himself, but another bather told lifeguards that she watched a fin swim away in the seconds after the man was bitten.

Based on the wounds, Maio and her colleagues theorize a baby sand tiger shark may have been to blame.

The attack came while thousands of bathers were desperately cooling off in the ocean as grueling 100-degree temperatures bore down on the sand.

The giant crowds were also supplemented by those who flocked to Jones Beach to watch the Navy’s Blue Angels practice for their blockbuster July 4th performance — the fighter jets will lead the International Aerial Review Saturday in the skies above the Statue of Liberty.

The encounter is believed to be the first of the summer at Jones Beach, and comes just one day after multiple shark sightings shut down nearby shores.

A swarm of bull sharks patrolling Rockaway Beach kept swimmers out of the water for hours Thursday, while a massive 9-foot shark was spotted at Point Lookout.

The big fish typically show up on the stretch of shores from the Rockaways to Montauk around July 4, which is when the waters warm up for the cold-blooded hunters and their scaly prey.

While humans are not on their diet, sharks take accidental nibbles of humans when mistaking feet and other limbs for fish, experts say.
