Chaos in the Sky: What Really Happened When a Plane Struck a Pole?

A plane with 267 passengers on board clipped a radar mast after landing at a Turkish airport — leaving a gaping hole in its side.

The Turkish Airlines Boeing 777’s right wing collided with a pole while taxiing to its gate after landing at Antalya Airport from Istanbul on Thursday, the airline said.

The collision pierced the fuselage, dislodged an overhead storage compartment and caused oxygen masks to drop in several rows, sparking panic.

The masks were seen dangling from the compartments as passengers were making their way off the plane.

The passengers were all evacuated and one person suffered minor injuries, the airline said.

“We have received information that the health condition of one passenger who sustained minor injuries is good,” said Yahya Ustun, the airline’s senior vice president of communications.

“A technical investigation regarding the incident has been initiated.”

The 17-year-old plane was towed to a parking area after its initial inspection.

It suffered significant damage to its right wing and fuselage.

The plane left Istanbul just after 6 p.m. local time for the 320-mile flight, arriving an hour later.
