Former NBA player Jason Collins passed away at age 47 after undergoing two surgeries shortly before his death. He had previously undergone a ventriculoperitoneal shunt procedure in April.

The first surgery was performed on April 20, aiming to relieve cerebrospinal fluid pressure on the brain. Nine days later, Collins had another procedure to place an inferior vena cava filter, preventing blood clots from reaching his lungs.

Cause of Death and Underlying Conditions

Collins' cause of death was determined to be respiratory failure, with underlying conditions such as pulmonary embolism, hydrocephalus, and glioblastoma contributing to his passing. His family announced his death on May 12.

The family expressed their heartbreak over losing Collins and highlighted his inspirational impact both personally and professionally.

A Life of Courage and Achievement

Collins was notable for being the first openly gay player in the NBA, surviving by his husband Brunson Green. He also bravely shared his diagnosis of Stage IV glioblastoma last year.

Throughout his 13-year career, Collins played for several NBA teams before retiring in 2015. Post-retirement, he continued to contribute as an ambassador for the NBA's social responsibility program.
