Jason Collins' Final Weeks: Two Surgeries Before His Death Revealed
Former NBA player Jason Collins passed away at 47 after battles with several health issues and surgeries. He was known for being the first openly gay player in the NBA.
Surgical Procedures
Collins underwent a ventriculoperitoneal shunt procedure on April 20 to relieve cerebrospinal fluid pressure on the brain. Nine days later, he had surgery to place an inferior vena cava filter to prevent blood clots in the lungs.
Cause of Death
His death was attributed to respiratory failure, with underlying conditions such as pulmonary embolism, hydrocephalus, and glioblastoma contributing.
Family and Legacy
Collins' family announced his death on May 12, expressing heartbreak and gratitude for the support received during his illness. He is survived by his husband Brunson Green, whom he married in 2025.
Collins was diagnosed with stage IV glioblastoma last year. In an essay, he detailed his struggle with this aggressive form of brain cancer.
Throughout his 13-year basketball career, Collins played for several teams before retiring in 2015. He also served as a Cares Ambassador for the NBA's social responsibility program.
