An Ohio high school teacher, Matthew Warden, has been arrested on assault charges after allegedly punching a student and attempting to strike another during a gym class.

Incident Details

Warden, 55, was arrested on May 7 by the Washington County Sheriff's Office. He worked as a physical education and health teacher at Waterford High School at the time of the incident.

According to criminal complaints, Warden allegedly struck one student in the jaw with a closed fist and attempted to punch another student. This occurred during school hours in a gym class setting.

Responses and Statements

The police affidavit revealed that Warden admitted to the incident but claimed he was "joking around" with the students. The Sheriff’s Office received a report leading to his arrest on May 6.

Suellen Coleman, Superintendent of Wolf Creek Local School District, indicated that an investigation into the allegations is ongoing. The employment status of Warden amid this investigation has not been confirmed.

Legal Proceedings

Warden was released from custody on May 8 on his own recognizance. As of now, it is unclear if he has entered a plea regarding the charges. Assault is considered a first-degree misdemeanor in Ohio, with potential penalties including up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
