Politician at Bar as 4-Year-Old Daughter Nearly Drowns—Then Gets Arrested
Frederick Alfred Jr., a Colorado state senate candidate, was arrested after his 4-year-old daughter nearly drowned in a hotel hot tub while he was reportedly at a bar. The incident occurred at Opal Key Resort and Marina in Key West, Florida.
Incident Details
Alfred had left his children, aged 6 and 4, alone on the night of April 20 when he went to buy drinks. While he was away, police responded to a report around 7:40 p.m. that a girl had almost drowned. Her brother attempted to rescue her but also needed help from nearby guests.
The girl was foaming at the mouth and received CPR before regaining consciousness. Police noted the smell of alcohol on Alfred upon his return.
Legal Consequences
Alfred was charged with two counts of felony child neglect. He initially obstructed paramedics from taking his children for medical evaluation but later allowed it. Medical professionals warned of potential delayed health issues stemming from the incident.
He has not entered a plea or secured legal counsel as of yet.
Candidate's Background
Frederick Alfred Jr. is the sole Republican candidate for Colorado's Senate District 21 seat, which is currently occupied by Democrat Adrienne Benavidez. Following his arrest, the non-partisan Chainsaw Caucus ended its association with him due to the allegations.
The organization stated these allegations conflict with their values of parental responsibility and accountability, wishing for the children's full recovery.
