169 Bar's Future at Risk Amid Strange Owner-Landlord Clash

Share Post

The iconic 169 Bar in downtown Manhattan is facing potential closure due to a dispute between the bar's owner and the building's owner. This conflict threatens the future of the century-old establishment known for its vibrant Lower East Side presence.

Historic Venue at Risk

169 Bar has been an integral part of various cultural scenes from punk to Dimes Square, attracting famous patrons such as Zoe Kravitz, Cillian Murphy, and Aziz Ansari. The building itself has served diverse purposes over the years, contributing to its legendary status.

Ownership Conflict

The bar's owner, Charles Hanson, acquired it in 2006, but tensions with the landlord have escalated over time. During the pandemic, ownership of the building transferred within the family, resulting in a decision not to renew Hanson's lease.

Legal Battle Ensues

Currently operating without a lease, Hanson is contesting the decision in court while stating his intention to retain the bar's name through trademark rights. He awaits a court decision on April 2 that will determine how much longer he can continue operations.
