Inside the ’90s Calvin Klein Era: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's Real-Life "Love Story"

Share Post

The Hulu series "Love Story," focusing on the romance between Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr., has become a hit, with fans imitating Bessette's style and visiting popular New York City spots. However, one former colleague of Bessette claims the depiction of her workplace is not entirely accurate.

Inaccuracies in Workplace Depiction

Kara Mendelsohn, who worked at Calvin Klein alongside Bessette in the '90s, shares that certain elements shown in the series do not align with reality. She recalls strict workplace rules including no personal photos and limited interaction with Calvin Klein himself.

According to Mendelsohn, flowers sent to employees were required to be white, like Calla lilies, rather than the red roses depicted in the show.

Strict Office Environment

The fashion designer's office environment demanded minimal makeup and polish-free nails. Eating was prohibited while working near Klein. Mendelsohn describes sneaking cigarettes out of a window for breaks.

She also mentions working conditions that included sharing cramped spaces often used for changing models.

Celebrities and Culture

Despite celebrity encounters, communication was discouraged. Mendelsohn once assisted Gwyneth Paltrow during an event but was instructed not to engage directly with her.

Bessette’s distinct style remains iconic from the '90s era, setting trends among women at that time.
