Florida Mom in Custody Following Discovery of 5-Year-Old Son in Trash Bag
A mother has been charged after her 5-year-old son was found dead in a trash bag in Perdido Bay, Florida. The investigation started on February 6 when the suspect's sister called the police expressing concerns for her nephew's safety. The boy's body was discovered in the bay.
The boy's mother, Jalynda Smith, was arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter (homicide). Investigators are unsure how Smith was identified as a suspect. She had a previous charge of child neglect in 2022 for leaving her toddler home alone.
Authorities are waiting for the medical examiner's report to determine the cause of the boy's death. The investigation is ongoing, and Smith may face more charges as new details emerge. She is currently in custody without bond.
