Peter Max's Colorful Legacy: The Artistic Vision Behind the Flower Power Movement New

Peter Max's Colorful Legacy: The Artistic Vision Behind the Flower Power Movement

Peter Max, whose colorful, psychedelic pop art expressed the optimism of the “flower power” movement of the 1960s and graced everything from postage stamps to a cruise ship, has died at 88, his son said in a written statement Wednesday.Max died on Monday, the statement said. No cause was given, but he had been suffering from advanced dementia.Max began his career in graphic design in the 1960s, and his swirly, colorful, instantly recognizable designs epitomized the era’s “flower power” art. But thanks to his prolific output and fun, accessible style, Max’s work remained popular well into the 21st century. In this Sept. 6, 2014, file photo, Peter Max poses for a photo during his retrospective with the Road Show Company exhibit in Northbrook Court Mall in Northbrook, Ill. Barry Brecheisen/Invision/APMax was the official artist for the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the Indianapolis 500, the World Cup, the World Series and many other events. His art appeared on a Boeing 777 airplane and a Norwegian Cruise Line ship. His portrait subjects ranged from U.S. presidents to Taylor Swift. But in his first flush of success in the late 1960s and early 1970s, his mural-like tableaus of flowers, the cosmos and cartoonish figures — all in vivid colors like turquoise, orange and neon green — seemed to be everywhere. Dorm room walls were plastered with his posters. Household furnishings like clocks and bedspreads sported his designs. He even created covers for the Manhattan Yellow Pages, a business phone directory distributed to millions of people. Max himself was featured on the cover of Life magazine in 1969, his trademark dark, bushy mustache framing a hearty grin.“We will remember his extraordinary creativity, his warmth, his curiosity, and the way he saw beauty and possibility everywhere,” his son Adam Max said in the statement announcing the death. “His art became part of American culture, but the man behind that art — the father we knew and loved — is the person we will miss most.”Family fled Nazi GermanyMax was born Peter Max Finkelstein in 1937 to a Jewish family in Berlin. They fled Nazi Germany for Shanghai when he was a baby and later spent time in Tibet, Israel and Paris before settling in New York City when Max was 16. By then, he said in an interview, he was already “a huge fan of American culture”: comics, movies and “all the jazz music.”Max studied in New York at the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute. In 1961, he opened a graphic design studio with friends. His bold, unique style was an immediate hit with ad agencies, publications, the corporate world and in pop culture.Painter Peter Max posing for a photo on Oct. 10, 1967, in New York. Getty ImagesThat led to a booming commercial business. “My work was really, I would say, almost exploited,” he said. “It was on mugs, it was on bedsheets, it was on dresses, it was on silks and scarves and ties — 70 product lines.”But what “bothered” him about all that success, he said, was that he “wasn’t painting anymore.” So he shut the business down for a time in the early 1970s to reconnect with his art. One of his biggest projects after returning to public life was a series of portraits of the Statue of Liberty, painted at the White House at the invitation of first lady Nancy Reagan in 1981.Max weathered various controversies in his personal and professional life. He pleaded guilty to tax fraud in 1997 after the IRS alleged he concealed more than $1 million in income from his art. He was originally sentenced to two months in prison but ultimately was allowed instead to serve the time in a work-release program, pay the back taxes and a $30,000 fine, and perform 800 hours of community service teaching art in Harlem schools.Max attends the opening of an exhibit of his art at Circle Fine Arts Gallery in New York on Oct. 16, 1986. Ron Galella Collection via Getty ImagesIn 2015, his family life became tabloid fodder in a back-and-forth between his second wife, Mary Max, and Adam, his son from a previous marriage. The son and a guardian alleged that Mary Max had depleted his finances and browbeat him. She in turn claimed that they had kept him from her against his will and stolen paintings that belonged to her. Accounts of court appearances described him as frail. In 2019, Mary Max died by suicide two weeks after The New York Times published a story detailing legal battles over his work. His art had a bright, happy vibeThose dark allegations contrasted with the relentlessly bright, happy vibe that infused his work. “The colors are strong, sometimes loud, sometimes raw and sometimes harmonious, but always powerful, and the images are always on the side of the peaceful nature,” he said. “I don’t discuss in my paintings negative things, I don’t dwell on it in my mind and don’t dwell on it in my canvasses.”In another interview, he summed it up like this: “I see everything through rainbow eyes.”Although accounts of Max’s career sometimes lament that he was not taken seriously by the art establishment, in fact his work has been featured in dozens of museum exhibitions around the world. New York’s Museum of Modern Art owns seven of his works. The art for the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” is sometimes mistakenly attributed to Max, but the design for the album cover and “Yellow Submarine” movie are officially credited to the late Heinz Edelmann. Max claimed in a 2012 interview he did the original “Yellow Submarine” design before handing it off to Edelmann. But the website for New York’s Park West gallery, a longtime dealer of Max’s art, described Max’s involvement in “Yellow Submarine” as “early consulting work.”Max was, however, friends with the Beatles and many other celebrities. He also had a deep interest in Eastern spirituality. He brought “Swami” Satchidananda Saraswati to the U.S., and helped him popularize yoga here.Max’s first marriage to Elizabeth Nance ended in divorce. In addition to his son, he is survived by a daughter, Libra Astro.

Ke Huy Quan's 'Stupid Face' Moment Sparks Reactions After Award Triumph New

Ke Huy Quan's 'Stupid Face' Moment Sparks Reactions After Award Triumph

Published 15:24 16 Sep 2026 GMT+1The actor revealed that he had been posing for selfies at the awards when someone made the cutting remarksKe Huy Quan has spoken about a lukewarm remark directed at him by a celebrity at the 2023 SAG Awards, telling him he had a 'stupid face'.Quan first came to international attention as a child when he starred in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as Indy's sidekick Short Round, as well as playing Richard 'Data' Wang in cult classic The Goonies.Following an acting hiatus of some 19 years, Quan came back onto the scene triumphantly, with his performance in 2022's Everything, Everywhere, All at Once going on to scoop him several awards, including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, as well as at the Actor Awards, known as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards until 2025, with Quan scooping his award in 2023, Entertainment Weekly reports. At the award ceremony Quan recalled in his memoir Never Say Die how he had been posing for selfies with other celebrities when he had an uncomfortable exchange with one actor.Advert“I spotted a well-known actor I’d respected for years standing right behind me,” he recalled in the book, "without thinking too much about it, I asked if we could take a picture together."I held the phone out between us, angled it back toward our faces, and leaned in.”Quan won an Oscar for best supporting actor (Cindy Ord/VF23/Getty Images for Vanity Fair)Quan said that he 'made one of my silly faces', as many of us have while taking selfies out and about, but the star, who was not identified, reacted in an unexpected way.“He looked at me for a beat, then said sharply, ‘Why did you make that stupid face?’ I laughed, a little surprised and not quite sure what to make of it,” Quan wrote. “He shook his head and added, ‘You’re not going to win tonight with that stupid face'."Quan recalled that this 'wasn't loud', adding: “No one else seemed to notice. We went our separate ways.”He went on to say that he had seen the person sat 'a few tables away' from him during the ceremony, and had 'tried' to forget about the strange interaction. And of course, the prediction that he was not going to win was ultimately proven to be entirely wrong, not only once, but twice.Quan would win the award for both Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, and a joint award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, both for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.Quan would win two awards at the SAG Awards (Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)“When my category came up, I wasn’t thinking about anything in particular," he said. "Then my name was called. For a second, I didn’t move.“Then I stood, that familiar disbelief rushing back in. I walked to the stage and accepted the award, feeling the weight of it settle into my hands.”He continued: “I went back to my seat, holding the statue, and smiled to myself. I’d won with that stupid face. I wasn’t going to let someone else’s comment touch that night. It was too big for me.”Quan's win made him the first asian actor to win Best Supporting Actor at the SAG Awards, as they were known at the time.“I recently was told that if I were to win tonight, I would become the very first Asian actor to win in this category,” Quan said in his acceptance speech. “When I heard this, I quickly realized that this moment no longer belongs to just me, it also belongs to everyone who has asked for change.”He added: "Thank you, everyone, for rooting for me; I will be rooting for you.”Featured Image Credit: Taylor Hill/FilmMagicTopics: Celebrity, Oscars, Film and TV, US News

Trump's Fiery Response to Canada's EU Move Sparks Global Tensions New

Trump's Fiery Response to Canada's EU Move Sparks Global Tensions

Published 02:57 17 Sep 2026 GMT+1Trump has hit back at plans for Canada to become an associate member of the EUPresident Donald Trump has threatened to introduce further tariffs as he hits out proposals allowing Canada to become an associate EU member. Trump has said that the plans could be seen as a ‘hostile act’ and has threatened to respond by imposing more tariffs depending on the ‘intentions’ of the European leaders involved. Speaking in Charlotte, North Carolina, Trump said: “If it’s a good intention, that’s fine. If it’s a bad intention, we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe.”He also suggested the US could cut off trade with Europe in certain areas.AdvertHis comments come after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed making Canada the European Union’s first associate member. In her annual State of the European Union address, von der Leyen said Canada and the EU would build on their existing free trade agreement, known as CETA, with a broader ‘Alliance for the Future’ that would be aimed at creating ‘a common prosperity and economic security space’.She explained that the relationship wouldn’t just be based in trade but also in shared democratic values. Donald Trump has warned further tariffs could be introduced (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)She said: “Above all, dear Mark, Europe and Canada believe in democracy.”Trump hit back at the proposal for Canada to join the EU as ‘laughable’ and said the country was a ‘terrible trade partner’. Trump’s tariffs and repeated talk of making Canada the 51st state have soured the historically very strong relationship between the North American neighbours.Earlier this month, Trump slapped a new ban on imports of alcohol, dairy goods and motorbikes from Canada. White House officials have said the ban will kick in on 29 September, after retaliatory tariffs promised by Canada were introduced on 8 September. Trump signed off on a sweeping executive order which will stop the import of a range of alcoholic drinks, including beer sold in cans and bottles, rye whisky and some kinds of wine. The order will stop the import of whey protein, some mopeds and motorbikes, and molasses. He also moved to shut Canadian products out of large, long-term US government contracts as Canada’s retaliatory tariffs took effect. In response to the new ban, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would speed up efforts to reduce the country’s dependence on the United States and said his strategy was about becoming more independent.Canada’s PM Mark Carney is looking to Europe as he plans for his country to become less reliant on the US (Anthony Devlin/Bloomberg via Getty Images)“It’s about ensuring that no country can hold us hostage,” he said.“And that we can live how we want to live.”As part of its bid to reduce its dependence on the United States, the destination for roughly 70 percent of its exports, and Carney has called for a ‘unique alliance’ with the EU.A Canadian official familiar told The Associated Press that Ottawa was exploring ties with the EU that could stop just short of membership. The official said Canada would seek an arrangement allowing its citizens to live and work in Europe without visas as part of a broader strategic partnership.Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s ambassador-designate to the EU, said that officials in Canada had talked to the EU about an ‘Alliance for the Future’, and that European officials had raised the idea of associate membership.Wilkinson said Canada would not be seeking to become a full EU member as that would mean the country had to surrender some sovereignty. Instead, Ottawa wants ‘to get as close as we possibly can’ to the bloc in a way that strengthens Canadian sovereignty rather than diminishes it, he said.Featured Image Credit: Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesTopics: US News, World News, Donald Trump, Politics

Macklemore's Bold Move: Donates $1 Million for Palestinian Causes After Tour Drama New

Macklemore's Bold Move: Donates $1 Million for Palestinian Causes After Tour Drama

Updated 22:49 16 Sep 2026 GMT+1Published 22:47 16 Sep 2026 GMT+1The US rapper has challenged Robert Kraft to match his $1 million donationMacklemore has announced that he will be donating the $1 million he made from the Ed Sheeran tour to organisations supporting Palestinian people. Macklemore had been on Sheeran’s Loop Tour until earlier this week when it was announced that he’d been dropped from the remaining date after he called to ‘free Palestine’ while on stage. In a statement shared on Monday (14 September), the US rapper said he was ditched after Gillette Stadium and Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft gave Sheeran an ‘ultimatum’. Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, said: “Ed was in a ****** up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. Advert“He told me that the words 'Free Palestine' and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn’t get past his public facing: I don’t take sides.’”Macklemore said Ed Sheeran was given an 'ultimatium' (Ethan Miller/Getty Images for iHeartMedia)Sheeran then shared his own statement in which he said that the decision to remove Macklemore had been down to the tour’s promoters and not him. In a fresh update, Macklemore has revealed that he’ll be putting his money where his mouth is and donating his earnings from the tour to several causes. "With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom," Macklemore wrote in a post on Instagram. He said that he’ll be giving away his net earnings from the Loop Tour to six organisations that are ‘working directly to support’ people in Palestine: Palestine Children's Relief Fund, HEAL Palestine, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians, UNRWA USA National Committee and Anera. He continued: "I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation. Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting. "A Palestinian life is no less valuable than any other life on this earth. That is what this has always been about. Not me. Not a tour. Not the headlines or the controversy. It is about Palestinians' right to freedom, dignity and safety in their own homeland."He concluded his statement: “When the news cycle moves on, which it will, don’t move with it. Free Palestine.”Macklemore’s gesture comes after Sheeran’s tour has been left in chaos after all of its support acts pulled out. Irish singer Aaron Rowe, who was featuring on the North American leg of performances, was the first to announce he was quitting the tour yesterday (Tuesday 15 September). This was swiftly followed by Finneas who also announced he wouldn’t be taking part in the tour, telling his fans: “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed.“I have decided to withdraw from my upcoming tour dates with Ed Sheeran. I stand with Palestine and its people.”And the walkouts didn’t end there, Irish band Beoga also shared a statement saying they’d no longer be taking part and Danish pop band Lukas Graham confirmed it would be exiting the tour just moments after Finneas made his announcement.Amid the ongoing media storm surrounding the matter, Sheeran has lost around 100,000 Instagram followers, while Macklemore has seen his follower count grow by almost a million.
