Nobel laureate urges ICC action over claims Russian medics aided prisoner torture New

Nobel laureate urges ICC action over claims Russian medics aided prisoner torture

Oleksandra Matviichuk, delivering her Nobel lecture in 2022 (Picture: EPA) A winner of the Nobel Peace Prize has called for immediate action after a report claimed Russia is weaponising doctors and medics to torture Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war. Oleksandra Matviichuk leads the Center for Civil Liberties, the human rights organisation which received the prize in 2022 alongside Russian non-profit Memorial and Belarusian campaigner Ales Bialiatski. The centre is among a group of Ukrainian charities and institutions sounding the alarm over allegations of international law and medical ethics by Russia. Medics are alleged to have denied badly needed care, tortured prisoners with tasers – and even branded patients with pro-Russia messages. Matviichuk told Metro: ‘We want to share this information to put pressure on Russia in order to save lives, because people are dying. People are dying. ‘Their conditions are inhuman and the treatment is beyond human imagination.’ She highlighted the case of a man who told her he saw medics only once while incarcerated, after he lost consciousness while being tortured. Matviichuk, a human rights lawyer, said: ‘The Russian medics were invited to give an injection and to return him to consciousness, to provide the opportunity to continue the torture process.’ In another case, she spoke of a Ukrainian soldier who woke from an operation to find the words ‘Glory to Russia’ had been written in scars on his skin with a surgical tool. She said: ‘Now this person, after returning to Ukraine as a result of prisoner exchange, is going through the process of removing this slogan from his body. ‘It’s a very painful and long-lasting process.’ Ukrainian military personnel returning home in March after time in Russian prison (Picture: Artem Gvozdkov/Global Images Ukraine via Getty Images) Such incidents are systemic rather than isolated, she said, pointing to testimonies collected over 12 years since the Russian invasion of Crimea in 2014. Matviichuk explained: ‘We interviewed people who returned from the prisons, but we also interviewed people who get information from people who are close to them – their relatives, their families, who are still under occupation. ‘We analyse open data with other verifications, draw a lot of information about different signs of captivity in video, in social networks. ‘And Russians are very brutal. They are not even hiding their crimes.’ The report, titled Anatomy of Torture, was written by four experts based at the Center for Civil Liberties and supported by the UK Government. Testimonies include several describing an individual based in the Russian Republic of Mordovia dubbed ‘Doctor Evil’. One person quoted in the report described a visit from the doctor: ‘The cell opens, and he hits the person addressing him and the person on duty in the cell. ‘And he would start talking like this: “Patient, what’s wrong with you? Patient, come here, give me your hand.” ‘Your eyes are closed, your head is tilted down, and you can’t see anything. You give him your hand, and he hits you in the hand with a taser. First, he hits you with a taser, and then he gives you a pill.’ Another person said the so-called Doctor Evil participated in torture and ‘ensured the person stayed alive’. From left, wife of Ales Bialiatski Natalia Pinchuk; Memorial chairman Yan Rachinsky, and Matviichuk with their certificates (Picture: Javad Parsa/NTB/AFP via Getty Images) The doctor in question was identified as Ilya Sorokin by Ukrainian human rights group KHPG. He was charged in absentia by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) in December last year, but Matviichuk said there is ‘no possibility to physically arrest him because he is in Russia’. The lawyer said ‘several submissions’ had been sent to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and she called on the body to ‘open the case based on these crimes against humanity’. She added: ‘What must be done is provide the full access of International Committee of Red Cross to all illegally detained civilians and prisoners of the war, and to create a special medics commission to be sent to Russia to work to get access to people.’ Matviichuk also urged professional medics in other countries to react to the practice, arguing such a mobilisation can have a ‘chilling effect’ on Russian behaviour as some exchanges and cooperation still exist. Last week, the Center for Civil Liberties led an open appeal to the World Health Organisation alongside a number of other NGOs, institutions and groups, calling for an intervention. The letter says the WHO has ‘unique expertise and international capacity to draw attention to violations of the right to health, uphold international standards of medical care, and help ensure that the principles of healthcare and medical ethics remain in force even in situations of armed conflict’. When approached by Metro, the WHO declined to comment. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.

9 Reasons Two People Remember the Same Conversation Differently New

9 Reasons Two People Remember the Same Conversation Differently

1. Attention determines what enters memory in the first placePeople can hear the same words without attending to the same information. One person may focus on the decision being made, while the other watches the speaker’s expression or worries about what to say next. Those unattended details may never be encoded clearly enough to recall later. During a tense meeting, for example, you might remember a manager’s critical phrase but miss the reassuring sentence immediately after it. The difference begins with attention, not necessarily dishonesty.2. Memory usually preserves meaning better than exact wordingConversation is often stored as its general meaning, or gist, rather than as a transcript. When recalling it, people rebuild sentences that fit what they understood at the time. If someone says, “The deadline may need another look,” one listener might later report, “She said the deadline would change.” That recollection captures an interpretation, not the precise statement. Exact wording is especially difficult to recover unless it was distinctive, repeated or recorded.3. Your role changes which details seem importantThe same exchange creates different practical concerns for each participant. In a discussion about moving house, one partner may track costs and timing while the other remembers comments about neighbourhoods and family. Each person’s goals guide attention and organise the resulting memory. This is not simply self-interest; relevance helps the mind decide what to retain. When comparing accounts, ask what each person needed from the conversation before assuming one version is careless or false.4. Expectations can quietly fill gaps in recallMemory draws on existing knowledge to make incomplete events coherent. These mental frameworks are useful, but they can supply details that were likely rather than present. After an ordinary restaurant visit, someone might remember receiving a menu before ordering even if the specials were actually written on a board. In conversation, expecting a colleague to be dismissive may shape how an ambiguous reply is remembered. The expectation can influence recall without proving that the remembered tone was imagined.5. Strong emotion highlights some moments and obscures othersEmotion does not simply improve or damage memory; it changes what receives priority. During an argument, an insulting word may become vivid while the sequence of remarks, surrounding context and attempts at repair remain hazy. One person might clearly recall hearing “irresponsible” but misremember whether it came before or after an apology. Emotional intensity can create confidence in central details without guaranteeing an accurate account of everything that happened around them.6. People can remember information but misplace its sourceSometimes the content is familiar while its origin is unclear, a problem called source-monitoring error. You may correctly remember discussing a holiday date but confuse something your partner said with a message you read in the group chat. Later, “We agreed on Friday” feels true because Friday was repeatedly considered, even if no agreement occurred. Separating what was said from where it came from can resolve disputes that look like contradictions but are actually source confusion.7. Later information can reshape an earlier conversationMemory remains open to revision after an event. New details, other people’s accounts and the eventual outcome can become woven into the original recollection. Suppose a project later fails because of its budget. A team member may then remember the first planning meeting as more focused on financial warnings than it actually was. This does not mean later information always creates false memories, but it can alter emphasis. Notes made promptly provide a useful comparison with later recall.8. Retelling strengthens a version, not necessarily the eventEach retelling is also another opportunity to practise a particular account. Details that fit the story are repeated, while awkward or uncertain parts may disappear. After describing a rude customer several times, an employee may become fluent and confident in a simplified sequence: complaint, insult, departure. That fluency can feel like accuracy, although it partly reflects rehearsal. Asking, “What are you least certain about?” can reveal where a polished story contains genuine gaps.9. Confidence and accuracy are not the same measureA vivid, quickly retrieved memory often feels trustworthy, but confidence can also grow through repetition, emotional importance or a coherent narrative. Meanwhile, an accurate person may sound hesitant because they recognise uncertainty. If two friends dispute who suggested a restaurant, the more forceful answer is not automatically better. Useful checks include contemporaneous messages, calendars and neutral witnesses. When no record exists, treating confidence as confidence—not proof—allows disagreement without forcing either account into a lie.

As Britney Spears once sang, they’re not that innocent.A group of UK teens has mobilized to ban sexed-up school uniforms from the porn industry, with support coming from local legislators.High school students at The Cooper School in Bicester have launched a petition calling for the ban of all school uniforms in XXX videos, telling The BBC that their traditional plaid kilts and shrunken blazers have been “warped by sexualization.” A petition from UK schoolgirls is urging lawmakers to ban school uniforms in adult films and sex shops. Bangkok Click Studio – stock.adobe.comSo far, the petition counts over 28,000 signatures — a respectable .05% of the entire UK population. It was created as part of the students’ Little Feminist Book Club, an after-school society. In April, the British government OK’d a law banning adults from pretending they’re underage in skin flicks, but so far, it hasn’t been enforced.“Sexy schoolgirl” is a popular category for Halloween costumes. One 15-year-old says that the mere thought of wearing her pleated miniskirt outside of school fills her with “fear.” “Young women and girls should not have to grow up seeing their school uniforms sexualized,” said Alex Davies-Jones, a member of Parliament who works on behalf of UK exploitation victims. “I commend these pupils for speaking out about something they feel so strongly about.”Teeny kilts and peek-a-boo button-ups are a mainstay of adult fantasy films, with tens of thousands of “hot schoolgirl” videos available on sites like Pornhub and OnlyFans. Many cartoons and cosplay outfits also channel sexy schoolgirls. AmazonBut the genre isn’t limited to XXX websites. Mainstream sites like Amazon boast over 600 options for “sexy schoolgirl” costumes, while trendy retailer Dolls Kill and even craft mecca Michael’s have some Rated R options. And manga comics created for adults often use ultra-sexy schoolgirls from other planets as their main characters without needing to disclose their ages — the cartoons are, after all, imaginary. It will be difficult, if not impossible, for a schoolgirl porn crackdown to include all of these variables. But for the students at The Cooper School, raising hell to fight for safer girlhoods is a worthy start.“This is something that makes people sexy,” 15-year-old Mae told reporters. “But I’m a child.”
