Michigan Parents on Trial After Shocking Death of 255-Pound 7-Year-Old

A Michigan couple charged in the death of their 7-year-old son, who died while weighing 255 pounds, have been deemed fit to stand trial, according to reports. A judge ruled on Wednesday, September 9, that Damien and Jessica O'Brien, the parents of Casper O’Brien, are competent to face trial on charges including second-degree murder, torture and child abuse, Mid-Michigan NOW reported. Authorities suspect obesity and neglect are related to Casper’s death in November 2025, per the news outlet. “The forensic examiner said that they're both competent,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “In other words, they understand the nature of the charges against them.” Last November, Jessica dialed 911 to report Casper, who was non-verbal, autistic and bedridden, stopped breathing at her Flint Township home, Leyton told Mid-Michigan NOW. A complaint obtained by the outlet states officers discovered the house “in really bad shape” with a child in a state of distress. Police noted the hoarding including insect infestations, piling trash and human feces. Casper was taken to a hospital, where he died on November 4, 2025, WJRT-TV reported. His parents are accused of severe neglect. Casper’s official cause of death was determined to be dilated cardiomyopathy, according to the TV station. Morbid obesity was listed as a contributing factor to his condition which resulted in a weakened, enlarged heart. Casper stood 50.5 inches tall while weighing 255 pounds before his death, the TV station reported. In comparison, according to the CDC, a weight of around 50 to 73 pounds is considered a healthy range for a boy Casper’s age and height. "That is obesity,” Leyton previously told WJRT-TV. “This child did not have a pediatrician, was only taken to the doctor I believe, according to the police report, once.” Leyton also said that Casper had a younger sister and that both children hadn’t attended school, per the TV station. At home, they lived in an environment full of trash with four dogs that were discovered in need of medical attention, police said in a report obtained by MLive. The house reportedly had one toilet, which wasn’t working and was found full with feces. Children’s Protective Services ultimately took custody of his 5-year-old sister, the outlet reported. Attorneys separately representing the O’Briens were unable to be reached for comment by the outlet. According to Casper’s obituary, he had a younger brother who previously died. The obituary described Casper “a bright, loving young boy whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him.” “He loved watching Super Monsters, especially his favorite character, Frankie Mash,” the obituary continued.

Geçtiğimiz aylarda Türkiye'ye karşılık nefret içerikli paylaşımları ile tepki toplayan Uganda Genelkurmay Başkanı Muhoozi Keinerugaba, sosyal medya hesabından yaptığı paylaşım ile ülkesindeki Türklerin bir an önce Uganda'yı terk etmeleri gerektiği uyarısında bulundu. Türkiye ve İsrail arasında yaşanan gerginlikte İsrail'den yana tavır gösteren ve Uganda Cumhurbaşkanı olan babası Yoweri Museveni ile görüşerek Türkiye'nin ülkesindeki projelerini iptal ettireceğini söyleyen Keinerugaba, haziran ayında Türk şirketi Yapı Merkezi'nin Uganda'da kazandığı 3,2 milyar dolar değerindeki demiryolu ihalesinin iptal edilmesine neden olmuştu. "TÜM TÜRKLER BAVULLARINI TOPLAYIP ÜLKEYİ TERK ETSİN"9 Eylül'de sosyal medya hesabından yeni bir paylaşımda bulunan Keinerugaba, "18 Eylül'de Türk Büyükelçiliği önünde kalabalık bir gösteri yapıyoruz. Gösteriden sorumlu kurumlar iyi bir iş çıkarmalı. Emirlerim çok net ve buna karşı gelen tüm Türk ajanlarını tutuklayacağız" ifadelerini kullandı. Bir diğer paylaşımında ise Türklerin bir an önce Uganda'dan ayrılması gerektiğini söyleyen Keinerugaba, "Uganda'daki Türklerle ilgili her şeyle bağımı çoktan kopardım. Bir an önce bavullarını toplayıp ülkemizden çıkmalılar” şeklinde konuştu. TÜRKİYE'NİN EN GÜZEL KADININI KENDİSİNE EŞ İSTEMİŞTİ Keinerugaba, nisan ayında yaptığı açıklama ile Türkiye'nin Somali'deki askeri faaliyetlerini eleştirmiş, yapılanlara karşılık Türkiye'nin Uganda'ya 1 milyar dolar ödeme yapması gerektiğini, ayrıca Türkiye'deki en güzel kadını da kendisine eş olarak vermelerinin şart olduğunu söylemişti.  Keinerugaba'nın Uganda Genelkurmay Başkanı ve ülke liderinin oğlu olmasına karşın bu açıklamalar, Türkiye ve Uganda ilişkilerinin tamamen kopmasına neden olmadı. Bu paylaşımlara rağmen Uganda, Türk vatandaşlarını sınır dışı etme veya Türkiye ile diplomatik ilişkileri kesme kararı almadı. Adalet Bakanı Akın Gürlek, 2017'den bu yana firari olarak aranan uluslararası suç örgütü lideri İslam Yakut'un İstanbul'da yakalanarak gözaltına alındığını açıkladı.Gürlek, İstanbul Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı koordinesinde İstanbul Emniyet Müdürlüğü, MİT Başkanlığı ve Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü Narkotik Suçlarla Mücadele Başkanlığı tarafından yürütülen çalışmalar sonucunda Yakut'un yakalandığını bildirdi.Yakut'un uzun süredir yurt içinde ve yurt dışında farklı adreslerde saklandığı ve bu süreçte suç örgütünü yönetmeye devam ettiği belirtildi.Yapılan çalışmalarda, Yakut'un kriptolu haberleşme sistemleri üzerinden örgüt üyelerine talimat verdiği tespit edildi.UYUŞTURUCU SEVKİYATLARINI ORGANİZE ETMİŞBakan Gürlek, örgütün İran ve Afganistan'dan Avrupa'ya eroin, Avrupa'dan Türkiye'ye ise sentetik uyuşturucu sevkiyatlarını organize ettiğinin belirlendiğini açıkladı.Örgütün Türkiye ve Avrupa ülkelerinde ele geçirilen toplam İKİ ton uyuşturucudan sorumlu olduğu ifade edildi.Gürlek açıklamasında, uyuşturucu ve organize suçlarla mücadelenin sürdürüleceğini belirterek, "Uyuşturucu baronları nerede saklanırsa saklansın, hangi yöntemlerle izlerini kaybettirmeye çalışırsa çalışsın, devletimizin kararlı takibinden ve adaletten kaçamayacaktır" ifadelerini kullandı.ÜNİVERSİTEYİ KAZANIP FİRAR ETMİŞİslam Yakut, İstanbul'da 21 Haziran 2009'da uyuşturucu suçundan gözaltına alınmış ve hakkında 17 yıl 6 ay hapis cezası verilmişti.Yakut'un yaklaşık 6 yıl Silivri Kapalı Cezaevi'nde kaldıktan sonra yarı açık cezaevine sevk edildiği belirtilmişti.Yakut'un özel bir üniversitenin kamu yönetimi bölümünü kazandığı, bu süreçte sınavlara jandarma eşliğinde gidip geldiği, daha sonra ise hafta içi izinli olarak üniversiteye devam ettiği bildirilmişti.
