Alzheimer's Risk: The Common Supplement You Need to Rethink New

Alzheimer's Risk: The Common Supplement You Need to Rethink

A supplement taken by millions of older adults to ease joint pain may accelerate the progression of Alzheimer's disease, according to new research from the University of Florida. The study, published June 9 in Nature Metabolism, found that people already showing signs of mild cognitive impairment were 25 percent more likely to develop dementia if they were taking glucosamine in supplement form than those who did not use the pill.Researchers also found that among patients already diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, glucosamine use was associated with a 25 percent increase in the risk of death.A Neuropsychologist’s Take on the FindingsDr. Jessica McCarthy, a New Jersey-based neuropsychologist specializing in dementia assessment and neurodegenerative disorders, spoke with Newsweek about the discovery."The study continues to build evidence towards the hypothesis that Alzheimer’s disease is not just a function of increased presence of amyloid plaques and tau proteins, but rather, it’s a combination of the aforementioned factors, along with metabolic dysfunction and inflammation," McCarthy said. "Because glucosamine crosses the blood brain barrier, it may worsen an already overactive metabolic pathway, facilitating a heightened risk of disease progression in people with mild cognitive impairment and mortality in people already diagnosed with Alzheimer's."Working backwards, sugar, in the form of glucose, doesn’t 'cause' Alzheimer’s, and completely eliminating carbohydrates isn’t the solution, either. The brain needs to decide when to utilize glucose to burn energy, and which to use in maintenance. In Alzheimer’s, it’s hypothesized that the brain has an issue with metabolic allocation, impacting inflammation."She went on to say that as a neuropsychologist, her greatest concern following the report is people continuing to want to take shortcuts when it comes to their health in the form of over-the-counter pills and supplements. "I'm not saying that supplements as a whole are problematic but taking supplements without understanding how they may interact with organ systems, pre-existing conditions, as well as other medications, can lead to problems, as this most recent study is suggesting," McCarthy said. What Is Glucosamine?Glucosamine is one of the most widely used dietary supplements in the U.S., sold over the counter and marketed primarily for joint pain and cartilage support as we age. Because it is used frequently by older adults—the same population most at risk for Alzheimer's disease—the University of Florida research team set out to examine whether the supplement could be influencing the course of neurological decline and its increase in recent years. To do so, researchers used artificial intelligence to analyze anonymized patient health records from UF Health, collected between 2012 and 2024. They focused on two groups: patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and those with mild cognitive impairment, a condition that can sometimes be a precursor to Alzheimer's.A mature woman looks to the distance (R); and a woman pouring supplement pills into her hand (L). | Getty ImagesWorking with collaborators Yi Guo and Jiang Bian, the team identified 1,896 patients with dementia and 2,750 with mild cognitive impairment who reported taking glucosamine—approximately 8 percent of each group. After adjusting for variables including age, sex, and demographics, the data showed a clear pattern: glucosamine users with mild cognitive impairment had significantly higher odds of progressing to dementia. The team also conducted advanced imaging studies of human brain tissue and used mouse models of Alzheimer's disease to look for biological mechanisms that might explain the association. The researchers found evidence suggesting that glucosamine may interact with metabolic processes in the brain that are already disrupted in Alzheimer's patients. Notably, the increased mortality risk was only observed in patients who already had a dementia diagnosis, not in those with mild cognitive impairment—a finding the researchers say suggests the supplement's effects may vary depending on how far the disease has progressed. What Should Glucosamine Users Do?The researchers acknowledge that the findings are observational and that clinical trials will be needed to confirm them. Nevertheless, they say the work adds to a growing body of evidence pointing to metabolic dysfunction as a key driver of neurodegenerative disease."From a behavior modification and a modifiable risk factor to dementia standpoint, the research is robust on how we can improve both brain health and metabolic health," McCarthy said. "Exercising with moderate intensity at least three or four times a week at least 45 minutes at a time with a focus on building muscle mass, getting adequate sleep and prioritizing sleep hygiene, implementing a Mediterranean diet when it comes to nutrition, and taking your prescribed medications go an incredibly long way with regards to maintaining overall health and staving off some of these neurodegenerative processes."If you are interested in supplements, it's not something you should be doing independent of speaking with your medical team. We also know that a healthy and active brain is one that is stimulated, engaged intellectually and socially, fed well, and provided adequate time to rest. These areas have strong research support to help manage metabolic health and inflammation and should be the first line of defense when it comes to maintaining a healthy brain."

Trump's Bold Space Force Gamble: What's Really at Stake? New

Trump's Bold Space Force Gamble: What's Really at Stake?

President Donald Trump vowed on Wednesday that the United States would "achieve total Space Force and Drone Dominance" if Congress passes a third $350 billion reconciliation bill, while also advancing one of his administration's most contentious election proposals. On his Truth Social platform, Trump urged Republicans to back the legislation—which he named "Recon 3.0"—along with the SAVE America Act, a bill that would require all voters to show photo identification and proof of citizenship. The president said the reconciliation bill would support a "generational investment" in the U.S military and framed it as the only way to a $1.5 trillion military budget, which he said was needed to "build the arsenal of freedom." Trump has made expanding military spending a priority of his second-term agenda, particularly amid the U.S.'s ongoing conflict with Iran and broader tensions across the Middle East."No other President has ever been more committed to both REBUILDING our Great Military and SAVING our Great Country—And NOW is the time to make it happen, for Generations to come," Trump wrote. He continued: "I am hereby calling on Republicans in Congress to IMMEDIATELY advance and pass the forthcoming $350 Billion Reconciliation Bill (Recon 3.0)—which, at the request of our Great Department of War—will include THE SAVE AMERICA ACT as well. No games, no delays, and no weak compromises! Do this ASAP. ..."We will defend the Homeland with the Golden Dome, launch the unstoppable Golden Fleet, dominate the skies with the F-47 and B-21, supercharge our ammunition stockpiles, and achieve total Space Force and Drone Dominance!"... What Are Trump's Military Goals?Trump's vision for the U.S. military centers on expanding missile defense, modernizing strategic airpower, rebuilding depleted weapons inventories and strengthening the country's presence in space. The Space Force, which Trump established in his first term as the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces, works to protect the U.S.'s "freedom to operate in space, keeping it secure, stable and accessible for military space power and new waves of innovation," according to its mission statement. In December, the president signed an executive order to ensure "American space superiority," which includes "developing and demonstrating prototype next-generation missile defense technologies by 2028 to progressively and materially enhance America's air and missile defenses."That initiative links to another of Trump's priorities: the "Golden Dome," a missile defense shield he proposed last May that would use ground- and space-based systems to counter ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missile threats. The administration is also backing next-generation airpower, including the F-47 sixth-generation fighter and the B-21 Raider stealth bomber, as part of a broader effort to modernize the Air Force. The U.S., which began launching strikes against Iran on February 28, will also need to replace its strained missile and ammunition stockpiles after its military operations against the Islamic Republic, according to an analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).While munition inventories are classified, CSIS has used public information and previous estimates to arrive at approximations. In an April analysis, the think tank identified seven key munitions heavily used in the war with Iran—including more than 1,000 Tomahawk missiles, almost one-third of the estimated prewar inventory of 3,100. Patriot missiles appeared even more depleted, the analysis said, with an estimated 1,060-1,430—of a stockpile of 2,330—used in the initial strikes. While the Pentagon has dismissed concern about the stockpiles, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in April that to replace ammunitions would take months and years, contingent upon the weapons system.Challenges the Recon Bill May FaceA third reconciliation bill focused on defense spending could face significant political and procedural hurdles, despite support from some Republican lawmakers.Reconciliation is a special budget process that allows certain tax, spending and debt-limit measures to pass the Senate with a simple majority, bypassing the chamber's usual 60-vote threshold—whereas most legislation can be blocked by a filibuster and typically requires bipartisan support to advance.During a hearing on Tuesday, two prominent Republicans—Senator Susan Collins of Maine, the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and former Senate leader Mitch McConnell—cast doubt on the bill."I think it's safe to conclude there will not be another reconciliation bill, so it's really not an option," McConnell said. "I agree with that assessment," Collins added.Republicans have already used the reconciliation process twice in Trump's second term, including to pass a "skinny" package boosting funding for Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While some GOP lawmakers have floated another bill focused on affordability and reducing fraud in social programs, Collins and McConnell suggested there may not be appetite for another major package.Challenges the SAVE Act Has FacedWhile Trump's Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has passed the House, it faces steep obstacles in the Senate as Republicans lack the 60 votes needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster.According to the president, the legislation would "guarantee the midterms" for the GOP, but Senate Majority Leader John Thune said this week that Republicans "don't have the votes" to pass the SAVE America Act."It's not something we can get done absent having an election and electing more Republicans," he added. The bill has drawn opposition from Democrats and voting rights groups, who argue that requiring documentary proof of citizenship could make it harder for eligible Americans to register to vote. Supporters, meanwhile, say the measure is needed to safeguard election integrity. The result is a legislative deadlock, leaving the bill effectively stuck as the lead-up to November's midterms intensifies.

T. Rex Handbag at Auction: The $500K Prehistoric Accessory You Won't Believe

It’s a sale of Jurass-chic proportions.  Birkins are beautiful. Chanel bags, très magnifique. But a purse derived from 66-million-year-old purse dinosaur DNA simply cannot be beat, per the Parisian auction house hawking the prehistoric must-have for over $500,000 on Thursday. Bidding paddles are sure to go flying in the air as auctioneer Alexandre Giquello of Hôtel Drouot in Paris, France, accepts offers on the first-ever handbag made with collagen from lab-grown Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, which were reportedly exhumed in the US, on June 11. The world’s first-ever T. rex leather handbag is heading to auction on June 11. REUTERS“This T. rex leather bag marks a defining moment in my career: a one-of-a-kind piece that stands as a historic milestone,” Giquello said in a statement. “A defining moment that challenges the boundaries of creativity and luxury.“And it’s the perfect carryall for the diva who doesn’t care if she rex her budget. With an asking price ranging from €300,000 to 500,000 ($347,081 to $578,469), the ancient accessory is an expensive, albeit exclusive piece that will go to the highest bidder with the deepest pockets. The purse was made with collagen from lab-grown Tyrannosaurus rex fossils. Alessandro Grandini – stock.adobe.comOf course, it won’t outshine the jaw-dropping $8 million dropped on Jane Birkin’s 1984 original Hermés handbag, which sold at auction to a Japanese mogul in July 2025. Nor will it come near the exorbitant $2.5 million cost of icon Marilyn Monroe’s haute memorabilia, including a Christian Dior suit she wore while honeymooning with Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio, purchased alongside the voluptuary’s valuables on June 1, what would have been her 100th birthday. But the dino-doodad certainly predates them both. Che Connon, a professor of tissue engineering at Newcastle University, alongside researchers at ad agency VML, genomic engineering firm The Organoid Company, and the sustainable biotechnology pioneers at Lab-Grown Leather Ltd., has led the charge in transforming matter from the extinct predator into extraordinary wearables. Researchers have shared a breakdown explaining the T. rex leather creation process. VMLFollowing an extensive process — including harvesting T. rex DNA, conducting phylogenetic analyses, inserting the materials into a specialized bio-leather cell line genome, transforming the cells into skin and sustainably tanning the skin to create the leather — the scientists have managed to make primeval magic. “The hard bit is making leather from cells, and we’ve done that,” Connon previously told The Post. “The upstream bit is using existing technologies, which is why we’re confident we can do this so quickly.”Connon has slammed skepticisms circulating T-rex leather, insisting that the unprecedented materials are legit. schusterbauer.com – stock.adobe.comNaysayers, however, have doubted the validity of T. rex leather, deeming it “gimmicky” and “very far-fetched,” owing to time and evolution. Still, Connon insists that the seemingly impossible is, in fact, possible. “Some people have got the wrong end of the stick saying, ‘Well, you can’t do it,’” he said. “But that’s not true.”“Rest assured, these are all things that have been proven.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene's Shocking Critique: Trump's Team Making Him Look Foolish New

Marjorie Taylor Greene's Shocking Critique: Trump's Team Making Him Look Foolish

Former Republican U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene sharply criticized President Donald Trump and his team during a Wednesday night appearance with Kaitlan Collins on CNN, arguing that members of his staff are "making him look like a fool" by not checking him on his previous statements about not engaging in wars.Greene pointed to Trump's repeated campaign promises to avoid "new wars" and foreign military entanglements. Her criticism comes as the administration has increasingly justified military action as a necessary response to events in and around the Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. Central Command, Trump authorized retaliatory "self-defense" strikes after a U.S. Apache helicopter was brought down near the strategic waterway, an incident that U.S. officials blamed on Iran. However, reports have also indicated that uncertainty remains over whether the helicopter was intentionally targeted or whether the incident resulted from a collision involving an Iranian drone, raising questions about the circumstances that triggered the latest round of military action.Newsweek reached out to the White House via email Wednesday night for comment....What To KnowThe criticism from Greene is notable because she was once among Trump's most loyal allies before breaking with the president over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump has also taken swipes at Greene, calling her "wacky."Greene was asked about Trump's statement to ABC's Kristen Welker in a previous interview, where he was asked what changed after insisting on no new wars. "First of all, I didn't guarantee no war, why would I have built the strongest military in the world," he responded in part. "This war shouldn't be happening, this was a major campaign promise in 2024 to end foreign wars, to not be involved in them. This is something the president has promised for many years; he's on video, he's on record, he can't change any of his statements. He said no more foreign wars, so it shouldn't even be happening. But it is hard to take the so-called peace talks serious," Greene said in part, pointing to Trump's repeated claims about a deal and ongoing strikes between Lebanon and Israel.Greene later continued when asked about Trump's comments to Welker: "I don't think the president's comms team is doing him any favors. After that interview came out and he's on record claiming he never said that he wouldn't go to war, no more foreign wars, you know people rolled out video after video of him saying on the campaign trail, just like I heard him say personally so many times as I campaigned with him, where he said no more foreign wars, I will end war, I will bring world peace. He said that over and over again, and there was video montage after video montage, and shame on his team for not showing him those videos of what he said and what he promised to the American people, because it's making him look like a fool."With retaliatory strikes on Wednesday, the gap between Trump's previous anti-war stance and the realities of a seemingly expanding military confrontation has become a central point of contention inside his own political base.Greene added that the internet does not forgive and the previous videos are everywhere. New Strikes Against IranIn posts to X on Wednesday, CENTCOM said that U.S. forces conducted additional self-defense strikes against multiple targets in Iran, beginning around 5:15 p.m. ET, as part of an ongoing response to what it described as "unwarranted and continued aggression."In a follow-up post, CENTCOM rebuffed a report by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that the Strait of Hormuz is closed. "TRUTH: Commercial ships are continuing to transit in and out of the Strait of Hormuz tonight," the post said in part.Fox News' Trey Yingst reported, citing Trump, that Iranian officials called Trump while he was in the Situation Room on Wednesday, and asked him to stop bombing. Yingst says that the president replied that the strikes will stop shortly.

Millie Bobby Brown's Bold Stance Sparks Debate: Why She Carries Her Own Bags New

Millie Bobby Brown's Bold Stance Sparks Debate: Why She Carries Her Own Bags

Millie Bobby Brown is a strong, independent woman who does not need a man to carry her belongings. “Hi, I’m Millie Bobbie Brown and I’m not gonna lie, when did women become incapable of holding their own bags, car seats and stuff?” Brown, 22, shared in a sneak peek of the Thursday, June 10, episode of the “Not Gonna Lie” podcast. “This stems from me holding all of my suitcases and bags and my kid and people are like, ‘Your husband doesn’t hold a single thing.’ Because I’m three miles ahead. I have been planning this all night.” Earlier this year, Brown and her husband, Jake Bongiovi, went viral when paparazzi photos surfaced of the pair out with their daughter. In one picture, the Stranger Things star was seen pushing a stroller while her husband walked nearby empty-handed. “We’re all about empowering girls and, ‘You got it’ and ‘You don’t need a man.’ But then when I’m like, ‘Ok, I can carry my own things,’ people are like, ‘Where’s your husband?’” Brown shared. “I can also do it on my own. Nobody knows my husband. My husband is the most polite, sweet, will-do-anything-for-me. But he also knows I’m capable.” Podcast host Kylie Kelce — who shares four daughters with husband Jason Kelce — immediately agreed with her guest and shared her own point of view. “I love this,” Kylie, 34, proclaimed. “The number of times that I have people come up to me and be like, ‘Do you need help with that bag?’ and I’m like, ‘Hey guys, I really appreciate it but if I needed help, I’d ask for it.’ The first person I’m asking — you guessed it — my husband. Thank you.” While Kylie enjoys “the idea of chivalry” and doesn't want to make it “dead,” men shouldn’t underestimate the strength of a woman. “I want there to be a degree of politeness and catering to your woman and whatever,” she continued, “but at the same time, don’t act like I’m broken or dainty.” Brown replied, “I’m not broken!” In August 2025, Brown surprised fans when she announced the arrival of her first baby with Bongiovi, 24. “This summer, we welcomed our sweet baby girl through adoption,” the couple wrote via Instagram in a joint statement. “We are beyond excited to embark on this beautiful next chapter of parenthood in both peace and privacy. And then there were 3. Love, Millie and Jake Bongiovi.” While Brown tries to keep her personal life off of social media and away from the Hollywood spotlight, the actress shared a rare photo of her daughter in February while celebrating a special birthday. “22. grateful for my husband and daughter. for my family and friends. all of my animals,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “I am so blessed. thank you for the birthday wishes. Xoxo.”

The Sweet Drink That Could Be a Health Time Bomb New

The Sweet Drink That Could Be a Health Time Bomb

The latest beverage trend is far from clean – and it’s raising red flags with doctors.Known as a “dirty soda,” it’s a soft drink that also includes a combination of added ingredients, such as flavored syrups, creamers, fruit juices, and other garnishes. The result is a sweet beverage that’s a combination of a soda, mocktail, and dessert.Dirty sodas can easily deliver 250-400 calories and 55-70 grams of sugar in a single drink, which is often more than double the American Heart Association’s daily added sugar limit, according to Erin Palinski-Wade, a New Jersey-based registered dietitian.“It’s more like a dessert beverage than a soft drink, even if people use diet soda as the base,” she told Fox News Digital. The drinks are most dangerous for those with insulin resistance, prediabetes or diabetes, Palinski-Wade warned.“The combination of rapidly absorbed sugar plus cream can cause sharp blood sugar spikes and crashes, driving hunger, fatigue and higher insulin demands,” she cautioned.Karlee Flores makes a dirty soda at FLOSO, which often includes a combination of ingredients, such as syrups, creamers, juices and garnishes, on Thursday, July 11, 2024, in Salem, Oregon. Abigail Dollins/Statesman Journal / USA TODAY NETWORKThe trend is said to have originated in Utah years ago at a specialty soda shop, Swig, reportedly due to people in the Mormon faith seeking an alternative to coffee. The drink was then popularized by social media and TV shows, such as “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” according to Eater.com.The dirty soda trend is widely credited to Swig, a Utah-based soda shop founded in 2010. The concept reportedly gained popularity in Utah, where many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints abstain from coffee and alcohol, helping create demand for customizable, non-alcoholic drinks.Along with many popular chains, the Ross County Fair offers tons of flavors including the orange dirty soda pictured here. Shelby Reeves/Chillicothe Gazette / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images“There are multiple soda shops in most suburbs here,” one Utah resident wrote on Reddit. “I have many coworkers who stop at one daily on their way to work [because] they don’t drink coffee, but will drink dirty sodas.”Trend goes mainstreamDirty sodas have recently grown in popularity, appearing on many restaurant menus and grocery store shelves. Coca-Cola has launched its Coca-Cola Cherry Float, which is designed to mimic the soda-and-cream experience, while PepsiCo offers a Dirty Mountain Dew Cream Soda.McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Sonic and Dunkin are among the fast-food brands that include dirty soda options in their beverage line-ups.Perhaps taking the cake is Crumbl, which recently launched a dirty soda that includes multiple sweet ingredients on top of an already sugary soda base.Kayleigh Crozier, an employee at the Crumbl in Newtown Township, adds a pump of mango puree to a customized Dirty Soda on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Michele C. Haddon / Bucks County Courier Times / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images“Crumbl needs to be stopped,” Dr. Mark Hyman wrote in a recent social media post. “Their new ‘dirty soda’ contains 186 grams of sugar, the equivalent of eating 19 Krispy Kreme donuts. This is a metabolic disaster and should be illegal.”Experts warn of health risksDr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, echoed the warnings about dirty sodas being “very unhealthy.”“They are loaded with processed sugar, empty calories, and saturated fats,” he told Fox News Digital. “They are also highly addictive, especially because of the high sugar content, and are about 400 calories per serving.”Over time, regular consumption of these types of sugary beverages can train the brain to seek repeated dopamine and endorphin releases, Siegel warned. This can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and other chronic illnesses.Tanya Freirich, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Charlotte, North Carolina, echoed that daily added sugars increase the risk of obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.“Additionally, the creamy mix-ins featured in dirty sodas are generally high in saturated fat, another nutrient that should be consumed in limited amounts,” Freirich told Fox News Digital.“If you’re looking for a mocktail or fun non-alcoholic beverage, consider using a base of plain seltzer water for a bubbly drink,” she recommended. “Even with the same add-ins, your end result will contain considerably less sugar, but still taste sweet.”Kenneth J. Perry, M.D., an emergency physician in Charleston, South Carolina, also noted that dirty sodas represent a continuation of the trend toward highly sugary beverages.“Their effects are short-lived, prompting individuals to consume excessive amounts,” he warned. “This combination of low nutritional value, high sugar content, and poor satiety can have significant health implications.”Each additional highly sugary beverage consumed daily increases the risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, Perry cautioned.Float the River, The Floso and Just Dew It are dirty sodas made at FLOSO, the first dirty soda business in Salem, on Thursday, July 11, 2024 in Salem, Oregon. Abigail Dollins/Statesman Journal / USA TODAY NETWORKThe World Health Organization recommends limiting free sugars – such as those found in beverages with added sugar – to less than 10% of total daily energy consumption, the doctor noted.“Beverages with added sugar are one of the most easily modifiable risk factors for various downstream health issues,” Perry added. For those who do decide to try the dirty soda trend, Palinski-Wade recommends choosing a small size, using a diet soda base, and limiting it to a rare treat.“It really belongs in the same category as a cake or a milkshake – occasionally, and in smaller portions.”
