Johnson Sparks Debate with New Push Against Birthright Citizenship New

Johnson Sparks Debate with New Push Against Birthright Citizenship

For decades, conservatives have argued that one of America’s biggest immigration loopholes has been hiding in plain sight.Every election cycle, politicians promise to secure the border. Yet one policy critics say continues to encourage illegal immigration has remained largely untouched, despite years of public frustration and repeated legal battles. Now, after a major Supreme Court setback, Republican leaders say the fight is not over.In fact, they believe it may be entering its most consequential phase yet.Speaking on Fox News, Johnson said Republicans are actively examining every available option to restore what they believe was the original meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment.“I really enjoyed Justice Clarence Thomas’ dissent. Everybody should read that,” Johnson said.“He explained that the 14th Amendment, the original intent, was to enhance and really value citizenship, and it’s been devalued because of birthright tourism, which is what we have now.”“It’s a threat to the rule of law and national security.”“We do need to address it. We’re looking at all angles. If there’s some legislative fix, we’ll advance that immediately.”Johnson’s comments come just days after the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 against the Trump administration’s effort to end automatic birthright citizenship through executive action. The majority held that children born on U.S. soil remain citizens regardless of their parents’ immigration status, relying on more than a century of legal precedent dating back to the Court’s 1898 decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark.President Trump immediately called on Congress to act.“The Supreme Court upheld Birthright Citizenship, which is too bad for our Country, but we can easily make it up in Congress through Legislation,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the ruling. The president argued that lawmakers should begin work immediately, insisting that “no long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary.”Johnson echoed that urgency, saying House Republicans are evaluating every possible legislative avenue.Conservatives argue that birthright citizenship has evolved far beyond what the Reconstruction Congress intended when it adopted the Fourteenth Amendment after the Civil War.They point to the amendment’s language granting citizenship to those “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States, arguing that phrase was never intended to include the children of illegal immigrants or temporary visitors. 🚨 IT’S OFFICIAL: Speaker Johnson announces he’s coming up with legislation to STRIKE DOWN rampant birthright citizenship and tourism scams for illegal aliens GOOD! Act fast! “I really enjoyed Justice Clarence Thomas’ dissent, everybody should read that. And he explained that… pic.twitter.com/GT2z3kgeV6 — Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) July 5, 2026Justice Clarence Thomas made that case forcefully in his dissent.“I am not sure that today’s opinion will stand the test of time,” Thomas wrote.“The Citizenship Clause added greatly to the dignity and glory of American citizenship. Today’s opinion devalues that citizenship.”Justice Samuel Alito also dissented, arguing that the Court’s modern interpretation extends well beyond the original public understanding of the Fourteenth Amendment.Supporters of reform argue the current system has created a powerful incentive for illegal immigration and birth tourism, with foreign nationals traveling to the United States specifically so their children will automatically receive American citizenship.Republicans contend that those practices undermine both immigration enforcement and the value of citizenship itself. The debate now shifts from the courts to Congress. Some Republicans believe legislation redefining who is “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States could survive judicial review.Others believe a constitutional amendment would ultimately be required, though that path would demand overwhelming support in both Congress and the states.Regardless of the legal route, Johnson’s remarks make one thing clear: House Republicans are not treating the Supreme Court’s decision as the final word.Instead, they view it as the beginning of a new legislative battle over one of the most consequential immigration issues in modern American politics. This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Taylor Swift's Godchildren Absent from Her Wedding: What's the Real Story? New

Taylor Swift's Godchildren Absent from Her Wedding: What's the Real Story?

Taylor Swift’s squad has evolved — and it’s unclear where that leaves her five godchildren.  The singer is godmother to troubled actress Jaime King’s 10-year-old son, Leo Newman, as well as all four of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ kids: Olin, 3; Betty, 6; Inez, 9; and James, 11. She was once so close to the girls that their names were used in songs, including “Betty,” from her 2020 album, “Folklore.”But, according to sources, all five were missing from Swift and Travis Kelce’s July 2-3 wedding celebrations at Madison Square Garden.Taylor Swift is godmother to troubled actress Jaime King’s 10-year-old son, Leo — but King was not at Swift’s wedding. Taylor Swift/ InstagramSwift (costumed, second from right) is the godmother to Ryan Reynolds (left) and Lively’s (center) four children — including daughters Inez (on Reynolds’ shoulders) and James (far right). BACKGRIDA source for King told Page Six in April 2025 that her friendship with Swift had “suffered because of the personal challenges” she has “faced over the past few years” — as she lost custody of Leo (pictured) and her elder son, James. Taylor Swift/Instagram“She just had Jason Kelce’s [daughters] as flower girls,” the source told Page Six of the groom’s nieces. King asked Swift to be the godmother to Leo, her son with then-husband Kyle Newman, in 2015 — the year after the model-turned-actress attended the singer’s Fourth of July bash in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, along with Emma Stone and Lena Dunham (who were both at the wedding).“Taylor gets really close to the people in front of her fast. She and Jaime just happened to be friends when Jaime was pregnant, and that’s why Jaime asked [Swift to be godmother] — but they didn’t have a super long history together,” one music insider said.Intimate details of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s nuptials are still under wraps. LAURA BRETT/EPA/Shutterstock“Taylor and Jaime haven’t been spotted together in years.”Indeed, a King source told Page Six in April 2025 that the “Hart of Dixie” actress’ friendship with Swift had “suffered because of the personal challenges” she has “faced over the past few years” — as she lost custody of Leo and her elder son James, 12, after she failed to complete a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.Reps for King, Swift and Lively did not respond to requests for comment.Lively and Reynolds, meanwhile, spent the day of Swift’s rehearsal dinner at daughter Betty’s horse show in Lake Placid.Swift and Blake Lively’s friendship soured amid the actress’ legal fight with “It Ends With Us” director Justin Baldoni. GC ImagesSwift and Lively’s friendship soured amid the actress’ legal fight with “It Ends With Us” director and co-star Justin Baldoni, which revealed that Lively had enlisted Swift to tell Baldoni how great her revision of the script was.The battle also exposed private texts between Swift and Lively from December 2024 — in which the singer admitted there had been “a little bit of a shift” in their relationship and that Lively’s communication “felt like … a mass corporate email sent to 200 employees.”Singer Todrick Hall, 41, meanwhile, allegedly got kicked out of the squad, and off the wedding guest list, because “he yapped about anything and everything” to do with Swift, the music insider said.“Taylor gets close to people fast and they’ll hang out a lot and then … they’ll just drift,” the insider said.Model Martha Hunt (right) was close to the singer around the same time as King and appeared in her “Bad Blood” video — but was not at the wedding, a source said. Penske Media via Getty ImagesOther former friends left off Swift and Kelce’s guest list included model Martha Hunt, 37, who was close to the singer around the same time as King and appeared in her “Bad Blood” video.“Martha did go to the Eras tour and sat in the [VIP] tent in 2023,” the music insider said, “but that was the last time [they talked].”A rep for Hunt did not respond to Page Six’s request for comment. But, the insider noted, Swift can be extremely loyal, and that’s why Lorde, 29, wasn’t at the wedding.According to a music insider, Lorde was not at Swift’s wedding after Lena Dunham, a good Swift pal, suggested in her memoir that her then-fiancé got overly close to Lorde. WireImageIn her 2026 memoir, “Famesick,” Lena Dunham — a Swift pal who was in attendance both nights and even gave a speech at the rehearsal dinner — suggested that the New Zealand singer, who goes unnamed in the book, got overly close to her then-fiancé, music producer Jack Antonoff.“Taylor’s always been the person that’s like, ‘if they’re good to me, I’m good with them’ because she doesn’t trust what’s in the headlines,” the music insider said. “It’s why she’s still friends with Lena Dunham after all these years.” Community GuidelinesWelcome to the Page Six Community! Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.

ICE Shooting in Houston: What Really Happened with Lorenzo Salgado Araujo? New

ICE Shooting in Houston: What Really Happened with Lorenzo Salgado Araujo?

A federal immigration agent fatally shot an illegal immigrant in Texas on Tuesday, with the Trump administration telling Newsweek the Mexican national had "weaponized his vehicle."The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told Newsweek that Lorenzo Salgado Araujo had died from his injuries in hospital, despite the efforts of first responders in Houston on Tuesday morning. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had been trying to arrest Araujo, but he had attempted to evade officers, a spokesperson said."From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense," a spokesperson told Newsweek, adding that the FBI was investigating the incident. The fatality marks the latest deadly interaction between federal agents and civilians under the Trump administration, which has included the deaths of three U.S. citizens: Ruben Ray Martinez, Renee Nicole Good, and Alex Pretti....Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Death: What To KnowDHS said ICE agents were attempting to make a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest Araujo around 6.50 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Araujo, who did not have legal status, attempted to evade arrest, DHS said. Despite multiple commands from agents, he tried to run over an ICE agent, leading to the officer firing his weapon in self-defense, the department said."The driver was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted," the spokesperson told Newsweek. "The driver was transported to the hospital where he passed away from his injuries."The FBI deferred to DHS on the death, telling Newsweek that its Houston agents were only leading an investigation into the potential assault on a federal officer, rather than the fatal shooting.Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, who represents the Magnolia Park neighborhood where the incident took place, shared a statement on X calling for a full investigation."ICE has released an initial account, but the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force," Garcia said. "All available footage, communications, and other evidence should be preserved and reviewed as part of a full and impartial investigation. The victim's family, my constituents, and the entire community deserve a complete and transparent accounting of what happened."Other Fatal Shootings Involving ICE and CBPAraujo's death in Houston is the latest in a series of fatal encounters involving federal immigration agents that have drawn intense scrutiny since President Donald Trump's return to office. One of the most closely watched cases involved Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen who was shot and killed by an ICE Homeland Security Investigations agent in South Padre Island, Texas, on March 15, 2025. Newsweek reporting later revealed the federal agency's involvement had not been publicly disclosed at the time.According to internal ICE records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, agents said Martinez accelerated toward an HSI agent during a traffic-control operation, prompting another agent to fire through the driver's side window. Martinez's family and an eyewitness account disputed that version of events, and the case has become a focal point in debates over transparency and use of force....In Minneapolis, immigration enforcement operations in January 2026 resulted in the death of two U.S. citizens this year. On January 7, Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old writer and mother, was fatally shot by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation.DHS said Good attempted to use her vehicle to run over officers and described the incident as an act of domestic terrorism. However, video footage which circulated publicly raised questions about the official account and fueled protests across Minnesota and beyond.Less than three weeks later, on January 24, federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, during the same immigration enforcement surge in Minneapolis. DHS initially said Pretti approached Border Patrol officers with a handgun and violently resisted attempts to disarm him.Subsequent video footage prompted widespread scrutiny, with critics arguing it contradicted key parts of the government's narrative. The shooting led to investigations, political backlash, and calls for greater oversight of federal immigration operations.Fatal shootings have also occurred during immigration enforcement operations involving non-citizens in other parts of the country.Incidents have been reported in Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, Oregon and California, with ICE or Border Patrol agents saying individuals attempted to ram officers, drag them with vehicles, or otherwise endangered agents before shots were fired. Those cases include the fatal shooting of a suspected Tren de Aragua associate during a Border Patrol operation in Portland, Oregon, and several other shootings in which federal authorities cited alleged vehicle attacks as justification for the use of deadly force.Federal officials have argued the incidents reflect a growing number of assaults on immigration officers, while civil rights advocates and attorneys representing some of those shot have challenged official accounts and called for independent investigations.Contact Newsweek editors on this story: Gabe Whisnant and Sam Wilson.

Ohio Child Rescue: The Shocking Conditions Sparking Nationwide Outrage New

Ohio Child Rescue: The Shocking Conditions Sparking Nationwide Outrage

The 16 children rescued from a rural Ohio home after investigators uncovered what authorities described as shocking living conditions are likely facing a long and difficult recovery, officials say. Some of the children were reportedly unable to speak, while an 18-year-old with developmental disabilities could not even write her own name. After they were rescued from the home in the village of Hamden on June 30, seven children were taken to hospitals, including one who was in critical condition. Child welfare officials have since been granted temporary custody. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the allegations point to years of abuse, neglect and trauma that will take significant time to address. Four adults, identified as the children's parents and grandparents, have been arrested on child endangerment charges. Defense attorneys have urged the public not to reach conclusions before all the facts are presented in court. Similar cases highlight the challenges ahead Officials say the children's recovery may involve foster care, specialized treatment centers, or psychiatric facilities, depending on their individual needs. Ohio already faces a shortage of foster families, making placements for children with complex needs even more difficult. "It's going to take a lot of work to address the emotional harm and some of the issues that are going to result from this," Wilson said during a news conference, per CBS News, adding he's seen nothing like the conditions that the children were subjected to. "But we need to make sure those kids are surrounded and loved and supported by people who truly care for them," he said. The situation has drawn comparisons to other high profile child abuse cases, including the rescue of 13 siblings from the Turpin family home in California in 2018. The children had allegedly been locked up for years and starved by their parents before 17-year-old Jordan Turpin escaped and contacted police. David and Louise Turpin later pleaded guilty to torture and years of abuse and were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Credit: WSYX ABC 6 Ohio's foster care system is already under pressure Experts say children rescued from severe abuse often require intensive services that many foster families are not equipped to provide. "We have a lot of kids with significant and serious needs, not all of which unfortunately can be met by a foster family," said Scott Britton, assistant director of the Public Children Services Association of Ohio. "So we unfortunately are all too accustomed to managing a very broad range of significant deficits in children." Britton said one in four children entering Ohio's foster care system does so because of behavioral health issues, developmental disabilities, or involvement with the juvenile justice system rather than abuse or neglect. He said residential care facilities and psychiatric treatment centers frequently have to step in to provide support. State and federal data also show child welfare agencies across the country continue to struggle with staffing shortages, high turnover, burnout, and recruitment challenges. Britton said Ohio has invested in children's services and behavioral health resources, including a statewide Medicaid managed care plan for young people with significant behavioral health needs, but acknowledged additional support is still needed. "I'm not saying it's enough," he said. "We could use more and a lot of it depends on where you're located." The long road to recovery The Turpin case also demonstrated that rescue is only the beginning of the recovery process. Six of the siblings were later placed in a foster home where they said they suffered further abuse. The foster family pleaded guilty, and the foster father was sentenced in 2024 to seven years in prison. Riverside County and a foster care agency later reached a $13.5 million settlement with the six siblings, while attorneys said the case helped drive important improvements in the county's child welfare system. Jennifer Turpin later spoke to ABC News about moving forward after surviving years of abuse. "I want the Turpin name to be, like, 'Wow, they're strong, they're not broken,'" she said. Elaine Chao's Controversial China Visit Amid McConnell's Health Crisis New

Elaine Chao's Controversial China Visit Amid McConnell's Health Crisis

One would think that a lifelong spouse would be at the other’s side when they were suffering from a major medical incident, but that isn’t the case, apparently, regarding former GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and wife Elaine Chao. The latter, who served as Transportation Secretary during President Donald Trump’s first term, has been making what some view as bizarre trips overseas while her husband remains hospitalized for, reportedly, a serious heart condition. On June 12, just two days before McConnell was hospitalized, Shanghai Jiao Tong University announced that Chao had visited the campus, marking her 12th trip to the university over the past 45 years.During the visit, Chao and her father donated several historical photographs to the university’s Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Memorial Hall, which is named in honor of Chao’s late mother, according to the university, WLKY reported. The university said the Chao family has maintained longstanding ties to the institution through decades of philanthropic support, including contributions that helped fund Mulan Hall.On June 16, two days after McConnell’s hospitalization, the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs announced that Chao met with its president, Wu Ken, in Beijing, WLKY reported. The organization said the two discussed U.S.-China relations and “other issues of common interest.”The following day, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States announced that Chao met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng during her visit.Chinese officials did not indicate that Chao’s trip involved any official U.S. government business.According to the embassy, the meeting focused on strengthening relations between China and the United States.Meanwhile, the Daily Beast reported that Chao traveled to China just three days after McConnell reportedly had a cardiac arrest and underwent CPR.The DB also reported that Chao met with the Chinese vice president, a largely ceremonial position.Photographs published by Chinese state media show Chao meeting with Han Zheng on June 17.According to Chinese officials, the two discussed efforts to strengthen relations between China and the United States, though Chao has no authority to negotiate anything on behalf of the U.S. government. The timing of the visit has drawn additional attention following McConnell’s hospitalization on June 14.Earlier this week, emergency dispatch audio first published by journalist Desirée Townsend indicated that first responders were dispatched to McConnell’s Washington, D.C., residence for a reported cardiac arrest.McConnell’s office has confirmed that the Kentucky senator remains hospitalized but has released few additional details about his condition. His staff has not publicly addressed his prognosis or who is overseeing day-to-day operations in his Senate office during his absence.“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” an emailed statement from his office said, per the DB.“The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session,” the email added.Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, has cautioned against drawing conclusions without additional medical information but said that patients who require CPR following a cardiac arrest often face a prolonged recovery. He noted that many survivors are initially unable to independently care for their basic daily needs, underscoring the potentially serious nature of such medical emergencies, the Daily Beast noted.“If it does work and we can restart their heart and their heart is beating spontaneously, that begins a long road to recovery, even for the healthiest of patients,” Faust said on Thursday night’s edition of Erin Burnett Outfront on CNN.“So when you have a person who is elderly and who has other underlying medical conditions, it‘s really concerning,” he added. This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Egypt's Coach Explodes After World Cup Exit: Claims Messi Favored New

Egypt's Coach Explodes After World Cup Exit: Claims Messi Favored

Argjentina në çerekfinale do ta presë fituesin e takimit Zvicër – Kolumbi./Arbresh.info
