Tragedy Strikes: Pennsylvania Trooper Killed by Illegal Immigrant Trucker

A Pennsylvania State trooper was killed by an illegal immigrant trucker who entered the country under the Biden administration and obtained a commercial driver’s license from Massachusetts while refusing to leave the country.Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr., 44, was inspecting a semitruck on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County at about 7 a.m. Wednesday when another truck went off the roadway and hit the first vehicle, creating a domino effect and striking the officer, state police said.Pahira’s patrol car was parked behind the cab with its emergency lights on as he inspected the vehicle parked on the right shoulder in Cass Township when the deadly chain reaction occurred, according to officials.Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira Jr. was killed when a truck struck him on the side of Interstate 81 on July 1, 2026. Pennsylvania State PoliceThe second truck, allegedly driven by 33-year-old Michael Bon, veered off the road, striking Pahira’s side mirror before crashing into the other truck. Both truck cabs caught fire as a result of the impact.Construction workers nearby saw the smoke from the wreck and raced to help the pinned trooper.Pahira was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.Bon, a native of Haiti, had entered the US through Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in July 2024 as a US Customs and Border Protection parolee, according to CBS 21.He filed for Temporary Protected Status with US Customs and Immigration Services in October 2024, but his application was denied.Troopers drag Michael Bon out of a police outpost after his arrest. WNEPThe Department of Homeland Security terminated his parole in June 2025. and issued a notice for him to leave the country, an order he didn’t obey and remained in the US, living in Brockton, Mass., the outlet reported.During his time in the Bay State, Bon obtained a non-domiciled CDL from Massachusetts and began driving tractor-trailers.He first applied for the special license in March 2025, when he was still eligible to work in the US under federal law, the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles told CBS 21.The license was renewed in February 2026, a month before the Trump administration directed states not to renew or issue new non-domiciled CDLs. “Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira Jr.’s death is a horrific and terrible tragedy. We mourn him and our thoughts are with his loved ones and fellow troopers,” an RMV spokesperson said. This defendant should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses program is a federal program. This individual was ruled eligible based on the Trump administration database and allowed to drive by federal law and Trump administration policies.”A handcuffed Michael Bon sits in the front seat of a car during his arraignment. WNEPBon has been living in the US illegally since June 2025. WNEPBon was injured in the crash and transported to a hospital. He has since been arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. He was arraigned on a $700,000 bail, and a DHS immigration detainer was lodged against him.Pahira, a 2007 enlistee with the Pennsylvania State Police, was remembered as a “good man and a good cop” who had just moved back in with his mom while she battled cancer.“I spent time with Mike’s parents, Patti and Mike, his sister, Jen, and some of his friends and fellow troopers. They told me about Mike — about how great a man he was, about his high school wrestling record, his love of cooking, and his commitment to caring for his mother as she battles cancer,” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said.“Just in the last few days, helped her shave her head as she is going through her treatments,” Shapiro said.“Trooper Pahira was the very best of us — Lori and I are praying for the PA State Police family and our local law enforcement partners after losing another one of their own,” Shapiro said.

Marco Rubio's Bold Move: Officer Fired Over Secret CCP Connection New

Marco Rubio's Bold Move: Officer Fired Over Secret CCP Connection

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has quickly become one of President Donald Trump’s most valuable and reliable team members. The Florida senator-turned-Secretary of State brings sharp intellect, extensive foreign policy experience, and unwavering loyalty to the America First agenda. As a steady voice in high-stakes decisions, Rubio continues to prove himself an indispensable asset, helping deliver results that prioritize American security and prosperity.A U.S. State Department foreign service officer has been fired after being caught on hidden camera admitting to a secret romantic relationship with the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) affiliate—a connection he failed to disclose to U.S. security officials, according to statements.Advertisement The officer, identified as Daniel Choi, was terminated following an internal review ordered by Rubio. The decision came after footage surfaced from an O’Keefe Media Group (OMG) undercover investigation in which Choi acknowledged that his girlfriend’s father was “straight-up Communist Party” and that she “could have been a spy.”“I defied my government for love,” Choi said in the secretly recorded video published by OMG, in which he discussed knowingly concealing the relationship from State Department officials despite being required to report any close personal contact with foreign nationals.A State Department spokesperson told reporters that, to their knowledge, this is the first time an officer has been terminated under the authority granted by Executive Order 14211, which President Trump signed earlier this year to strengthen accountability within the diplomatic corps. The order states that “all officers or employees charged with implementing the foreign policy of the United States must, under Article II, do so under the direction and authority of the President,” adding that “failure to faithfully implement the President’s policy is grounds for professional discipline, including separation.”In a statement announcing the dismissal, the department said: “The Foreign Service Officer admitted to concealing a romantic relationship with a Chinese national, whom he said on camera ‘could have been a spy.’ He also said that her father was ‘straight-up Communist Party.’ The officer was required to report this contact to Department security officials, but said, ‘I defied my government for love.’ Accordingly, the Secretary recommended that the officer be separated for failing to faithfully implement the President’s foreign policy.”Choi’s case underscores growing concerns within the U.S. government over Chinese intelligence-gathering through personal and professional relationships with American officials. For years, counterintelligence experts have warned that Beijing uses romantic entanglements, financial incentives, and academic ties to collect sensitive information from U.S. personnel.“Romantic and social connections remain one of the most exploited vectors in Chinese espionage,” said a former senior intelligence official familiar with State Department security procedures. “An unreported relationship like this represents a massive vulnerability, no matter how innocent it may appear.”While the State Department declined to detail the internal investigation, officials confirmed that Choi’s failure to report the relationship violated long-standing security protocols designed to protect against coercion or compromise by foreign entities.Foreign service officers are required to immediately disclose any “close and continuing contact” with foreign nationals who may have ties to hostile governments.Choi reportedly told the undercover journalist that his girlfriend’s father was either a provincial or federal education minister within the CCP structure, adding, “She could have been a spy — I don’t even know.”After the video’s release, Secretary Rubio moved quickly to recommend termination, citing national security concerns and the need to enforce accountability across diplomatic ranks.Rubio has taken a hard line on countering Chinese influence within U.S. institutions since becoming Secretary of State, tightening vetting procedures for foreign contacts and expanding background checks for personnel stationed in East Asia and Washington-based policy roles. This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Why Kosovo's New Minimum Wage is Sparking Controversy

Michael Coard's Battle to Preserve Philadelphia's Slavery Memorial Sparks Debate New

Michael Coard's Battle to Preserve Philadelphia's Slavery Memorial Sparks Debate

As the city of Philadelphia fights the Trump administration's removal and replacement of the slavery memorial at the President's House, the man who founded the movement to build the exhibit decades ago has found himself at the center of a heated national debate about how to tell this painful chapter of U.S. history."On the eve of the 250th, Americans, far and wide, are going to be talking about how patriotic they are, how much they love this country. Well, you can't love something unless you know something," said Philadelphia attorney Michael Coard.Coard founded Avenging the Ancestors Coalition (ATAC) in 2002 -- the group that launched a successful movement to build the exhibit, which memorializes the nine African men and women who were enslaved at the site of the nation's first White House by President George Washington. As the future of the memorial remains uncertain as America turns 250, Coard reflected on how a remarkable archaeological discovery and his own search for his lost ancestry inspired a decades-long fight to preserve the history of enslaved Africans in the nation's birthplace.A groundbreaking archaeological discoveryAlthough it was well-documented that Washington enslaved hundreds of people, this part of his legacy was largely omitted from public exhibits and historical sites, including Philadelphia, presidential historian Mark Updegrove told ABC News."For so long in the course of our history, we did ignore the stories of slaves. That's not something that we talked about readily in our history," Updegrove said. But in Philadelphia in 2002, the publication of a monumental archaeological discovery just steps away from the Liberty Bell Center by independent historian Edward Lawler, Jr., would bring the legacy of slavery and Washington's role in it back to the forefront of America's consciousness. In this Feb. 19, 2026, file photo Michael Coard, attorney and founder of the Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC), speaks after National Park Service workers reinstalled a slavery exhibit at the President's House, following a U.S. judge's order to reinstall it, in Philadelphia.Hannah Beier/Reuters, FILELawler's research, which was published in August 2002 in The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, unearthed the foundation of Washington's home in Philadelphia, which was demolished in 1832, uncovering the layout, including the slave quarters.Lawler's report, which led to a major excavation in 2007 at the site of the nation's first executive mansion, included the names of the nine men and women who were enslaved there by Washington: Austin, Christopher Sheels, Giles, Hercules, Joe, Moll, Paris, Richmond and Ona (Oney) Judge, the personal maid to Martha Washington."We found out that George Washington enslaved Black men, women and children there, and many of us were, like me, we in the African American community in Philadelphia, we felt betrayed," Coard said."I went to arguably the best school in the country, Masterman, and never heard about it. I went to America's first HBCU chain university, never heard about it ... born and raised in Philadelphia, never heard about it," Coard said. "It is because it was designed not to be discussed, not to be talked about, because that was a blemish on America."In this photo released by the National Parks Service, President's House Site is shown in Philadelphia.National Parks ServiceA search for lost ancestryCoard, who has roots in Virginia but grew up in Philadelphia, said that learning about the enslaved people who lived at the President's House struck a chord and fueled his own curiosity about his lost ancestry as a Black American.Reflecting on his time in middle school at Masterman, Coard said that his best friend Michael was Italian American, whose fluency in his native tongue and strong connection to his roots and ancestry ignited a "latent jealousy" in a young Coard, who longed to learn more about his own ancestors."I had a kind of latent jealousy for Michael. Why? Because he could still speak the same language his great-great-great-great grandfather spoke in Italy," Coard said. "He could tell me in what state in Italy his great great grandfather was born, what city, what neighborhood, what street, what block."Popular ReadsBut Coard, like many Black Americans whose ancestors were enslaved, said that he has no certain record of his own ancestry.Portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart painted in 1803.STOCK PHOTO/Getty ImagesPursuing what he called his own "amateurist research," Coard said the most he could learn was that there was an Englishman named William Coard in Virginia, where Coard's family is from, who purchased a boatload of enslaved Africans in the Richmond area in 1753."I haven't filled in the gaps," Coard said, wondering if being enslaved by William Coard could be how his ancestors acquired their last name.According to researchers at the University of Southern California, enslaved Africans were "rarely included in any official records," leading to a "lack of ancestral information" for their descendants "spanning several centuries."For Coard, preserving what little African Americans know about their ancestors has become his life's calling.'The whole truth'As Lawler's findings in 2002 fueled a robust movement to honor the enslaved men and women who lived in the nation's first White House, the Philadelphia attorney founded Avenging the Ancestors Coalition (ATAC).For eight years, the group rallied city officials, politicians and advocates to petition the National Park Service and the city of Philadelphia to build a slavery memorial at the President's House."We came together and we said, this is outrageous that nobody is talking about this," Coard said. "And as so we begin to push and push and push."In this Aug. 19, 2025, file photo people walk past an informational panel at President's House Site in Philadelphia.Matt Rourke/AP, FILEThe movement prevailed with the opening of the exhibit in December 2010. Its contents were a culmination of a robust collaboration between NPS officials, city leaders, historians and advocates, Coard said."The reason that these historically related institutions, whether it be museums or historic sites, are so important is because often it's the only time that the visitor will be engaged with that part of history," Updegrove said. "So it's so vitally important to get the story right. And getting the story right necessitates telling the whole story, not only from the perspective of a George Washington, but from the perspective of somebody who worked in that house.""And I think they've done a marvelous job of doing just that [at the President's House]," he added. But 15 years later, the future of the exhibit is hanging in the balance. The Trump administration is seeking to replace the exhibit's panels, claiming the content is "divisive" and "disparages" George Washington. Meanwhile, Coard and his coalition are backing the city of Philadelphia's fight to preserve it.Coard said that his group will continue to fight back."If you really claim to love America on the eve of the 250, you got to tell the truth," Coard said. "The whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and that includes the good, the bad, and the ugly."ABC News' Sabina Ghebremedhin and Jeana Fermi contributed to this report.
