PV: 9,878

Gas Prices Drop as July 4 Travelers Rejoice: What's Behind the Relief? New

Gas Prices Drop as July 4 Travelers Rejoice: What's Behind the Relief?

U.S. drivers are seeing more relief at the pump heading into the busy Independence Day travel weekend, with gasoline prices continuing to fall as crude oil markets stabilize following the easing of Middle East supply disruptions. The national average price for regular gasoline fell to $3.84 per gallon on July 2, according to AAA, extending a steady decline from late May. Prices are down nearly 50 cents from a month ago, though they remain above year-ago levels.“Overall, gas prices remain the highest they’ve been in 4 years, but the downward trend since late May is welcome news during the busy summer driving season,” AAA said in a statement. The decline comes as millions of Americans prepare to travel over the long July 4 holiday weekend, traditionally one of the busiest driving periods of the year.Crude oil prices have retreated sharply from the highs reached during the U.S.–Iran war, helping to put downward pressure on retail gasoline costs despite lingering uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.Transit of crude and other key commodities through the maritime chokepoint has picked up since Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 that extended a fragile ceasefire and reopened the strait to commercial traffic.Related StoriesWhile the pause in fighting has largely held, there have been several minor exchanges of fire as Iran seeks to assert control over Strait of Hormuz shipping lanes and doubles down on plans to impose tolls, or what it calls maritime service fees, after the current 60-day grace period lapses.U.S. President Donald Trump, along with senior members of his administration, has opposed any type of fees on Hormuz transit, pushing for an arrangement that will ensure freedom of navigation.Crude Prices Continue to RetreatBenchmark oil prices softened this week as tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continued to normalize.West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was down 6 cents at $68.63 per barrel early Friday, while Brent crude was at the $71.87 mark.Analysts at ING said the market is on track for a fourth consecutive week of declines, with improving oil flows through Hormuz helping to unwind the geopolitical risk premium that drove oil prices sharply higher during the conflict. The easing supply outlook has pushed the front end of the Brent futures curve toward contango—a market structure often associated with adequate or growing near-term supplies.“Yet with the flat price falling and the forward curve moving into contango, we could start to see more buying in the market,” ING analysts wrote, suggesting that trading dynamics could put some upward pressure on prices.Other experts described market participants as mostly hopeful but bracing for a possible uptick in tensions that could once again squeeze oil supply.“It’s a case of guarded optimism, with the market wanting to believe the peace efforts will hold, but it’s still hedging its bets until it sees real evidence on the water,” said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade.Trump on Thursday hailed signs of energy markets’ normalization while predicting further declines in prices. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said oil prices were “plummeting fast,” and gasoline prices were also falling, “but not as fast as they should be.”The president praised a fuel retailer for announcing one-day price reductions at 25 gasoline stations across the Philadelphia area on July 3 to mark America’s 250th birthday celebrations.“A very smart Retailer ... is stepping up,” Trump wrote, urging other gas stations to follow suit. The comments followed Trump’s June 30 warning that gasoline retailers should pass along falling crude oil prices more quickly to consumers. At the time, he accused some stations of price gouging and urged retailers to target prices around $2.50 per gallon, while saying his administration was examining whether companies were failing to reflect lower wholesale costs at the pump.If gas stations don’t lower prices at the pump, “big problems lie ahead,” Trump warned.Industry executives and energy analysts have said that gasoline prices typically lag movements in crude oil markets.Chevron Chief Financial Officer Eimear Bonner said last week that lower crude prices should lead to cheaper gasoline but predicted that the adjustment would take some time.“There is a lag between reductions in oil prices and when that shows up at the pump,” Bonner told CNBC.

US Heatwave Forces Major Event Cancellations Amid Massive Power Outages New

US Heatwave Forces Major Event Cancellations Amid Massive Power Outages

As America begins to celebrate its 250th birthday on Saturday, there are nearly 1 million outages being reported across multiple states. The current total of 956, 388 homes, according to tracking site PowerOutage, accounts for states in the Midwest and Northeast that have been impacted by severe weather and extreme heat. That number, which will fluctuate throughout the day as crews work to restore power, is for households, meaning that the number of people impacted by these outages is likely to be much larger. The outages come as some areas are expected to experience severe weather and stifling heat again on Saturday.Millions of Americans, however, will be contending with a heatwave that is blanketing much of the country, including in Philadelphia where the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade that had been set for Friday was canceled due to the dangerous heat wave, according to Philadelphia ABC station WPVI.Elsewhere, America's Independence Day Parade, which was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on July 4 in downtown Washington, D.C. was canceled by organizers late Friday evening due to the extreme heat in the District of Columbia.PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JULY 03: Members of a high school band from Alabama receive water outside of Independence Hall after news that the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade has been canceled due to extreme heat on July 03, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The National Weather Service has an Extreme Heat Warning for the District of Columbia, with heat index values expected to reach between 110°F and 115°F," a statement on the website said.Popular Reads"This decision was made after extensive consultation with the National Park Service, the District of Columbia City Government, and Freedom 250, and careful consideration of the safety of our participants, spectators, and staff as the top priority," the statement continued. The Great American State Fair and FIFA Fan Zone on the National Mall will open at noon Saturday, two hours later than originally planned, because of the extreme heat, organizers announced Friday. The delay is the latest weather-related schedule change from Freedom 250 as Washington, D.C., faces another day of dangerous triple digit heat.

Why Trump's Approval Ratings Are Sparking Debate in Key States New

Why Trump's Approval Ratings Are Sparking Debate in Key States

As Donald Trump prepares to deliver a speech on the National Mall to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, a map of state-level polling reveals significant disparities in support for the president.Nationally, the president is at 37 percent approval and 58 percent disapproval as of July 1, leaving him significantly underwater with a net approval rating of -21, according to Civiqs’ rolling online tracking poll of registered voters. The poll has garnered 114,500 responses since January 20, 2025, when Trump returned to office for a second term.At the state level, the polling shows a president who has stronger support in several reliably Republican states, but remains deeply underwater in much of the country, including in all six battleground states that swung to Trump in the 2024 election. Even small shifts in voter sentiment could have a significant impact in November’s midterm elections, when control of Congress for the remainder of Trump’s term is at stake.Use the map below to explore where Trump’s net approval rating stands in each state:Where Trump Is Most PopularTrump has the highest approval rating in Wyoming, with 59 percent approving of the way he is handling his job as president and 35 percent disapproving, giving him a net approval rating of +24.He also has positive net approval in many of the other states that make up the Republican heartland:North Dakota: +17 (56 percent approve, 39 percent disapprove)Alabama: +14 (54 percent approve, 40 percent disapprove)Idaho: +14 (53 percent approve, 39 percent disapprove)West Virginia: +14 (53 percent approve, 39 percent disapprove)Arkansas: +12 (53 percent approve, 41 percent disapprove)Oklahoma: +11 (53 percent approve, 42 percent disapprove)South Dakota: +12 (53 percent approve, 41 percent disapprove)Tennessee: +6 (50 percent approve, 44 percent disapprove)But even in the states where Trump’s approval rating is highest, the latest figures still mark a clear decline from the start of his second term. He began his second term with +46 net approval in Wyoming, +30 in North Dakota and +24 in Alabama.Where Trump Is Least PopularThe president’s net approval rating in lowest in Vermont, where just 19 percent approve of his job performance, while 77 percent disapprove, giving him a net approval rating of -58.Other states with especially low net approval ratings include:Hawaii: -59 (18 percent approve, 78 percent disapprove)Maryland: -50 (22 percent approve, 72 percent disapprove)Massachusetts: -47 (25 percent approve, 71 percent disapprove) California: -44 (26 percent approve, 70 percent disapprove)Washington: -40 (28 percent approve, 68 percent disapprove)Connecticut: -39 (28 percent approve, 68 percent disapprove)Oregon: -39 (28 percent approve, 67 percent disapprove)New York: -38 (29 percent approve, 67 percent disapprove)These figures underscore Trump's continued struggles in states that have traditionally favored Democratic candidates in presidential elections. ...Key Battleground StatesTrump remains underwater in all seven of the swing states that he carried in the 2024 presidential election. His approval rating continuing to decline in those states could hurt Republicans in November’s midterm elections, and allow Democrats to pick up key seats in the House and Senate.Arizona: -12 (42 percent approve, 54 percent disapprove)Georgia: -20 (37 percent approve, 57 percent disapprove)Michigan: -20 (38 percent approve, 57 percent disapprove)Nevada: -24 (35 percent approve, 59 percent disapprove)North Carolina: -14 (41 percent approve, 55 percent disapprove)Pennsylvania: -18 (39 percent approve, 56 percent disapprove)Wisconsin: -13 (41 percent approve, 54 percent disapprove)Even in Florida, a former swing state that has been reliably Republican in recent years, Trump's net approval rating is -12, with 42 percent approval and 54 percent disapproval. What the Demographic Data ShowsA look at the demographic data reveals a significant partisan divide, with Republicans overwhelmingly approving of Trump’s job performance and Democrats overwhelming disapproving. More independents disapprove, with 30 percent approving and 62 percent disapproving.A look at the data on a national level also shows an age, education, race and gender divide. The polling data shows older voters are more supportive of the president, while young voters are strongly against. Just 24 percent of voters aged 18 to 34 approve of Trump’s performance, while 71 percent disapprove. On the other end of the spectrum, 46 percent of those 65 and over approve of Trump, while 50 percent disapprove. The data shows Trump is strongest with white voters. Forty-four percent of white voters approve of his performance, while 50 percent disapprove. Among Black or African-American voters, just 8 percent approve, while 89 percent disapprove. Education is also a key divide. Only 25 percent of postgraduates approve of Trump’s performance, while 71 percent disapprove. Non-college graduates were more narrowly split, with 40 approval and 54 disapproval. What the White House SaysThe White House has repeatedly dismissed the president’s low approval ratings, pointing to Trump’s 2024 election victory as the clearest measure of public support. In response to inquiries about polling, White House spokesman Davis Ingle previously told Newsweek that the 80 million Americans who voted for Trump gave him a mandate to “deliver on his popular and commonsense agenda.”Trump “has already made historic progress not only in America but around the world. It is not surprising that President Trump remains the most dominant figure in American politics,” Ingle said.Contact Newsweek editors on this story: John Fitzpatrick and Yannick Demoustier.
