Trump's Return to Mount Rushmore: What Makes This Visit Unforgettable? New

Trump's Return to Mount Rushmore: What Makes This Visit Unforgettable?

KEYSTONE, S.D.—A day before America’s 250th Independence Day, Mount Rushmore will serve as the majestic backdrop for a speech from President Donald Trump—capped by a show-stopping $700,000 fireworks display.Trump and world-renowned fireworks creators, Pyro Spectaculars Inc., are both returning to the famous South Dakota landmark for a reprise of Trump’s 2020 visit. At that time, the California fireworks company lit up the night sky after Trump became the nation’s fifth president to deliver a speech at the iconic national memorial, following presidents Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. This time around, as Trump headlines a program honoring the nation’s semiquincentennial, he is set to become the sole U.S. president to give two Rushmore speeches. The July 3 Rushmore speech will serve as a prelude to Trump’s remarks at the grand July 4 celebration in the nation’s capital. At Rushmore, Pyro Spectaculars promises to unveil “unique color-changing and strobe effects never before presented in the USA,” its proposal for the show says. The company, run by the Souza family for five generations, has repeatedly won some of America’s most coveted fireworks contracts.Related StoriesA half-century ago, when America marked its bicentennial in 1976, the Souzas lit up the New York and Boston harbors.A decade later, Pyro Spectaculars commemorated the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary. The company has also been entrusted to add pizzazz to several Olympic Games, Los Angeles Dodgers games, and Macy’s July 4 and Thanksgiving events in New York City.‘Fitting Place’ to Honor HistoryUnder a contract with South Dakota, this year’s Rushmore show will build on the company’s 2020 work in the area. The display will serve as a “narrative tribute” to the four presidents enshrined on the monument: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. The program will emphasize Washington and Jefferson because of their pivotal roles in the nation’s founding.Washington was the first American president. And before becoming the third president, Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, the nation’s founding document signed on July 4, 1776.The other two presidents depicted on Rushmore took office many years later. The monument’s sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, said he selected Lincoln, the 16th president, to represent the permanent union of the U.S. states; Roosevelt, the 26th president, stands for U.S. prominence globally and the rights of everyday people. Now, although Trump has disputed the 2020 election that put President Joe Biden into the White House, skipping those four years enabled him to preside over the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration during his second presidency. On July 3, the 47th president will give keynote remarks “beneath one of the nation’s most recognizable symbols of freedom and self-government,” said Freedom 250, which is coordinating this event and many others nationwide.Keith Krach, Freedom 250 chairman, describes Mount Rushmore as “a tribute to the leaders who shaped the American experiment and secured the blessings of liberty for generations to come.”“As we mark 250 years, there’s no more fitting place to honor how far we’ve come,” while also anticipating the future with optimism, Krach said in a news release.Admission to the July 3 Rushmore celebration is limited to officials, credentialed news media, and 4,800 lucky members of the public. Those people were among 103,000 entrants in a $1-per-chance public lottery earlier this year.People can also tune into various TV stations or the official livestream at TravelSouthDakota.com beginning at 4 p.m. MT.In addition, watch parties are set for several communities near Rushmore.Planned CelebrationsBefore Trump’s speech and the fireworks, a “celebration of American history, culture, and patriotism” is planned, Freedom 250 said.It will include “family-friendly activities, educational exhibits, presidential reenactors, interactive experiences, and music.”Toward the end of the day, music performances, precision drill demonstrations, and aviation flyovers will honor all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. At twilight, South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, formerly North Dakota’s governor, will welcome Trump to the stage. He “will deliver a historic address commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary and charting a course for America’s next chapter,” America 250 said. The fireworks display by Pyro Spectaculars is set for 9:45 p.m. and will run about a half-hour.The show will be “choreographed to patriotic music,” America 250 said, adding that the show’s grand finale will “create an unforgettable moment worthy of the nation’s 250th birthday.”Pyro Spectaculars said the anniversary serves as “a milestone of the moments that define us.”“We don’t just light the sky to be loud; we do it to quiet the noise of the world and remind us why we are free,” the company proposal says.“While the birthday belongs to the nation, the memories belong to the families.”“Our mission is to bring magic to the sky ... celebrating America’s 25oth birthday and adorning one of America’s greatest icons.”Past Rushmore SpeechesTrump’s first speech at Rushmore was held exactly six years prior, on July 3, 2020. It occurred at a time of great upheaval, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests.During his speech, Trump railed against protesters who were defacing and toppling monuments across the nation.“This movement is openly attacking the legacies of every person on Mount Rushmore. They defile the memory of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt,” he said. Then the 45th president, Trump had just signed a law carrying harsh punishments for monument vandals. He also said the vandalism of monuments appeared to reflect a larger effort to destroy America and declared, “We will never let them rip America’s heroes from our monuments, or from our hearts.”Decades earlier, while the monument was still under construction, the nation’s 32nd president also made memorable statements at Rushmore.President Franklin D. Roosevelt, known as FDR, spent five minutes delivering a 700-word impromptu speech. But his August 1936 remarks are often quoted by historians.FDR stated that he had seen drawings and photos of Rushmore, but seeing it in person for the first time made him aware “of its permanent beauty and of its permanent importance.”He then mused that, perhaps 10,000 years later, future Americans might gaze upon the carved likenesses of the presidents on Rushmore. It made him wonder what they would think of people from ages past.“Let us hope that at least they will give us the benefit of the doubt,” FDR said, “that they will believe we have honestly striven every day and generation to preserve for our descendants a decent land to live in and a decent form of government to operate under.”

Why Mayor Mamdani's AC Rule Is Causing a Chill at City Hall New

Why Mayor Mamdani's AC Rule Is Causing a Chill at City Hall

Zo’s so cold.Temperatures inside City Hall plunged as low as 54 degrees Thursday during the ongoing heat wave — despite Mayor Zohran Mamdani urging New Yorkers to set their air conditioners to a balmy 78, The Post found.Sweaty Post reporters armed with an infrared thermometer tested 20 spots within City Hall and other municipal offices and buildings they were able to access — and all but five of them were below 78 degrees. The “heat for thee, but not for me” revelation comes after Mamdani got roasted online Wednesday when he recommended New Yorkers set their AC to 78 degrees or higher to help avert potentially dangerous Con Edison power outages.City Hall was a frosty 61 degrees in some spots during Thursday’s heat wave. J.C. Rice for NY Post“Maybe the mayor shouldn’t tell New Yorkers to sacrifice their comfort if he isn’t willing to do the same,” scoffed David Carr (R-Staten Island), the City Council’s minority leader. Most of the locations tested by The Post hovered a degree or two off the Mamdani-approved benchmark at around noon — two hours before Central Park hit 100 degrees for the first time in more than a decade. But by 4:30 p.m., temperatures had plummeted even more in the mayor’s office building, with the air in one room testing at a sweater weather-worthy 54 degrees.Meanwhile, temperatures outside hit 100 degrees. ZUMAPRESS.comThe democratic socialist Hizzoner drew scores of half-baked “warmth of collectivism” jokes Wednesday after issuing the recommendation, though past mayors such as Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio gave the same advice during heat waves during their tenures. The US Department of Energy likewise suggests people keep their thermostats at 75 degrees to 78 degrees Fahrenheit over the summer.Mamdani, while issuing his own recommendation, also contended city buildings would lead by example.“Our City is doing its part too: maintaining the 78 degrees rule in our buildings, dimming/turning off our lights during peak electricity demand, asking private partners to do the same, and powering down non-essential equipment,” he posted on X.But the fancy thermometer told a different story.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="885" height="590" src="https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/07/2026-stretch-dangerous-heat-expected-133054516.jpg?w=1024" alt=" A woman adjusts her sun hat during an extreme heatwave in New York, New York, USA, 02 July 2026. Trump's Kids Face Unavoidable Scrutiny Over Business Ventures New

Trump's Kids Face Unavoidable Scrutiny Over Business Ventures

President Donald Trump on Thursday defended his family's business activities while arguing that the power of the presidency has made it nearly impossible for his children to avoid allegations of conflicts of interest.Speaking in an interview with CNBC's Joe Kernen, Trump said he sympathizes with his children because nearly any business decision they make is scrutinized through the lens of his position in the White House. "I feel badly for my kids. Anything they do ... because the presidency is so powerful, so big, you have a conflict of interest. Almost anything they do, there's a conflict of interest," Trump said in part. The comments come as renewed attention focuses on the Trump family's business ventures following the release of the president's latest financial disclosure report, which detailed $1.4 billion in 2025 income from cryptocurrency-related ventures and other business interests linked to the Trump family. Newsweek has reached out to the Trump Organization via email for comment.Trump Defends Family Business ActivitiesDuring the interview, Trump rejected suggestions that he is using the presidency to benefit himself or his family financially. When Kernen asked how he responds to critics who accuse him of enriching his family through the White House, Trump said he has stepped away from managing his business empire."I don't do anything having to do with my business. My kids run it," Trump said. "I have a lot of money. I made a tremendous amount of money. I let people invest it. I don't even know who they are."Trump argued that his children face unique challenges because decisions made by the federal government can affect virtually every sector of the economy. The president said even routine business decisions, such as "buying a truck," can trigger conflict-of-interest questions because of their connection to him. The president added that he has encouraged his children to keep their distance from potential controversies, while noting they had established business careers long before he entered politics. Trump said he has told his children to "stay away," but acknowledged they also have personal and professional lives separate from his political career.Scrutiny Intensifies Over Second-Term Business TiesQuestions surrounding the Trump family's business interests have followed the president throughout both of his administrations, but critics say those concerns have intensified during his second term as the family's portfolio expands into areas including cryptocurrency, international real estate and private investments.Trump's latest financial disclosure report drew particular attention because it showed substantial income tied to crypto ventures associated with the family. The filing included hundreds of millions of dollars connected to World Liberty Financial and related businesses. Supporters of the president say that Trump has complied with applicable ethics requirements and note that federal conflict-of-interest laws do not require presidents to divest personal assets. Trump underscored that point in the CNBC interview, saying there was "nothing illegal" or improper about the family's business activities. Ethics watchdogs, including Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), along with Democratic lawmakers and former government ethics officials, have argued that the Trump family's expanding business ventures create actual or perceived conflicts of interest.Warren, the top Democrat on the Senate banking committee, accused Trump of “brazen crypto corruption” this week after the financial disclosures revealed his family’s cryptocurrency ventures made more than $1 billion since his return to office.“The crypto legislation heading to the Senate floor must prevent the president, vice-president, senior administration officials, members of Congress, and their families from profiting off the crypto industry,” said Warren in a statement. “If it does not, it will only turbocharge Donald Trump’s brazen crypto corruption.” It's not the first time Warren has issued a warning over Trump's financial dealings with his family. In May 2025, Warren and Sen. Chris Van Hollen sent a letter to President Trump urging him and his family to divest from World Liberty Financial. They wrote that: "Your personal financial entanglements with foreign governments threaten to undermine U.S. national security." ...How Trump's Children Have Managed Business Ventures During His PresidencyTrump's children have long occupied a unique position at the intersection of politics and business. During Trump's first administration, daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, served as senior White House advisers, taking on portfolios that ranged from economic policy to Middle East diplomacy. Both stepped away from their formal government roles after Trump left office in 2021 and did not return to the White House when he began his second term, though Kushner has remained a prominent figure in international business and has at times been involved in discussions related to foreign policy. Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have continued to lead the Trump Organization's business operations, serving as executive vice presidents.Their responsibilities include the company's traditional businesses—golf clubs, hotels, commercial and residential real estate, and international licensing deals—as well as a major expansion into new sectors including cryptocurrency, private clubs, venture capital and branded consumer products. Eric Trump has generally taken the lead on the company's real estate and development projects, frequently announcing new Trump-branded hotels and golf resorts abroad, while Donald Trump Jr. has maintained a larger public profile through political advocacy, media appearances and investments outside the family's core real estate business. The brothers have significantly expanded their business portfolio in recent years. Their highest-profile ventures include co-founding World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance platform that has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for the Trump family through token sales and a stablecoin business. They also launched American Bitcoin in March 2025, a cryptocurrency mining company, and have backed ventures through 1789 Capital, where Donald Jr. is a partner investing in defense, AI and technology companies. They have pursued international Trump-branded licensing agreements in countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, India and Romania, while expanding into firearms retail, drone technology and politically aligned consumer brands.According to Forbes, Donald Jr.'s net worth increased six fold since between the presidential election in November 2024 and the end of Donald Trump's first year back in office, in December 2025, jumping from $50 million to $300 million.Debate Likely to ContinueThe president's remarks are unlikely to end the broader debate over where the line should be drawn between public office and private business interests. Ethics watchdogs and political opponents have continued to raise concerns about potential conflicts involving Trump-branded businesses and family ventures, while the White House and Trump Organization have repeatedly maintained that appropriate safeguards are in place. For Trump, however, the issue is as much personal as political. His comments Thursday framed the scrutiny as an unavoidable consequence of occupying one of the most powerful offices in the world, arguing that the presidency's reach is so broad that "almost anything" his children do becomes the subject of public examination.Contact Newsweek editors on this story: Gray R. Trump Admin Faces Backlash Over Controversial Slavery Exhibit Changes New

Trump Admin Faces Backlash Over Controversial Slavery Exhibit Changes

On the eve of America's 250th birthday, an appeals court cleared the way for the Trump administration to revamp the slavery exhibit at the President's House in Philadelphia, in a way critics say "whitewashes" the history and brutality of slavery.President Donald Trump has asserted in the past on social media that institutions "across the country" focus too much on "how bad Slavery was," instead of focusing about the "success" and "brightness" of the country. On Friday morning, an appeals court issued a mandate that finalized its June 18 decision that the Trump administration can remove and replace the informational display panels at the slavery memorial at the President’s House in Philadelphia-- the nation’s first executive mansion, where President George Washington enslaved nine men and women. The mandate was requested by the Interior Department in a motion filed on Thursday seeking the “immediate” replacement of the panels."The President’s House is an important national historical site, and the Government submits that the President’s House exhibits should be fully installed without further delay," the motion says.In this Feb. 10, 2026, file photo,dDemonstrators gather to protest removal of explanatory panels that were part of an exhibit on slavery at the President's House Site in Philadelphia.Matt Rourke/AP, FILEThe Interior Department did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request when asked on Friday if the panels will be replaced by the July 4 holiday this weekend. The June 18 appeals court ruling stems from a January federal lawsuit filed by the city of Philadelphia against the Interior Department and National Park Service, seeking to preserve the slavery memorial. In this photo released by the National Parks Service, President's House Site is shown in Philadelphia.National Parks ServiceThe city of Philadelphia filed a motion on Friday afternoon to appeal the court’s decision, arguing that the court erred in issuing the mandate because it did not give the city enough time to respond to the federal government’s motion on Thursday.ABC News reached out to the city of Philadelphia but a request for comment was not immediately returned. What could changeThe memorial, which opened to the public in December 2010 after a broad coalition of advocates, historians and public officials rallied for its creation, was taken down in January without notice by the Trump administration and was partially restored in February after a federal judge’s ruling. The panels share the stories of the nice people who were enslaved at the site by Washington and now, only 16 of the 34 are standing. The Trump administration is seeking to replace the original panels with new messaging that was published in April on the National Park Service website. A preliminary injunction by a federal judge initially ordered the Trump to preserve the “status quo” at the exhibit, but the appeals court ruling in June dissolved this decision.“What Trump wants to do and plans to do is to literally whitewash and censor the site,” said Philadelphia attorney Michael Coard, the founder of Avenging the Ancestor’s Coalition – a group that Coard founded in 2002 to launch a movement to convince Philadelphia to build the slavery memorial.Portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart painted in 1803.STOCK PHOTO/Getty ImagesIn making his argument, Coard pointed to the proposed removal of images that show the beating and shooting of enslaved Black men.Popular ReadsHe also pointed to what he called “two glaring examples” on the National Park Service website that are “blatantly offensive from a racial standpoint,” as they seek to downplay the severity of slavery and Washington's role in it."One [of the panels] makes the argument that well, slavery under George Washington in Philadelphia at the President's House wasn't really that bad, because the enslaved Black folks there had ‘a modicum of autonomy,'" Coard said.Coard also pointed to new proposed language that highlights Washington’s “discomfort” with slavery, despite the fact that he enslaved hundreds of men, women and children. In this Feb. 19, 2026, file photo Michael Coard, attorney and founder of the Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC), speaks after National Park Service workers reinstalled a slavery exhibit at the President's House, following a U.S. judge's order to reinstall it, in Philadelphia.Hannah Beier/Reuters, FILE“The second point, in terms of concrete examples, deal with the language on the website that well, George Washington really wasn't a cruel slave master because he had ‘discomfort’ with the issue of slavery,” Coard said.“Now, how the hell can you make that point? Because the fact is that he enslaved 316 Black men, women, and children at Mount Vernon. If he had discomfort, what the hell do you think they had?”A spokesperson for the Interior Department told ABC News that the removal and planned replacement of the panels complies with President Donald Trump’s March 2025 executive order, "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.”The order called for the removal of “negative” and “divisive” materials from national parks and content that “disparages” Americans, living or dead.In this Aug. 19, 2025, file photo people walk past an informational panel at President's House Site in Philadelphia.Matt Rourke/AP, FILEThe spokesperson said that the new proposed panels underscore the administration's commitment to "celebrating and acknowledging the full breadth of our nation's history."Coard said that as America celebrates the 250th’s anniversary of its founding, what happens at the President’s House could have a wide-ranging impact in the country.“The President's House site has become basically a test case, almost like the canary in the coal mine,” Coard told ABC News in an interview on Wednesday. “They want to see what the Trump administration can do with this, and if they can destroy this, they [can] destroy similar sites across the country.”
