Chris Johnson's Heartbreaking ALS Diagnosis at 39 Sparks Emotional Reactions New

Chris Johnson's Heartbreaking ALS Diagnosis at 39 Sparks Emotional Reactions

Former NFL star and three-time Pro Bowl running back Chris Johnson revealed he has been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.Johnson said in an interview with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Michael Strahan that he was diagnosed with the disease last year, at age 39."There's no history of ALS in my family," Johnson said in the interview that aired Monday on "GMA." "My doctors believe my case is what's called sporadic ALS, which is actually how the vast majority of ALS cases happen."ABC News' Michael Strahan interviews former NFL star Chris Johnson about his ALS diagnosis in an interview that aired on "Good Morning America" on June 29, 2026.ABC NewsHe continued, "That's one of the reasons this disease can be so shocking. It can happen to someone who never expected it."Johnson, who was selected in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans, said he was in the prime of his life last year, working out daily and spending time with his wife and four children, when he noticed the first symptom of what he later learned was ALS."I first noticed weakness in my right hand," he said. "At first, it was little things like my grip didn't feel right and I wasn't as strong as I've always been."Johnson's wife, Brittany Johnson, said she thought his hand weakness was the result of his years spent on the football field. The running back ran over 11,000 total offensive yards in his NFL career, before retiring in 2017."I thought because of football and, you know, his career, that it had to be something with that," she told Strahan. "Maybe ... a pinched nerve or something along those lines, but never ALS."ABC News' Michael Strahan interviews former NFL star Chris Johnson and his wife Brittany about his ALS diagnosis in an interview that aired on "Good Morning America" on June 29, 2026.ABC NewsALS, short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a degenerative neurological disorder that eventually leads to paralysis, taking away a person's ability to move, speak, swallow or even breathe, according to the National Institutes of Health.Researchers have studied possible links between ALS and factors such as injury or physical activity, but no confirmed cause has been found for most cases. There is currently no known cure for ALS, but some treatments may slow down the progression of the disorder and improve the quality of life for patients with ALS. The NIH states that most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within three to five years of symptoms first appearing, though about one in 10 people with the condition live 10 years or more.Chris Johnson described receiving the diagnosis of ALS as a "shock," revealing that the doctor who diagnosed him said a medication may extend his life by a few months and that he and his wife should "get our affairs in order.""Honestly, I don't know if you ever fully process it," he said of the diagnosis. "At first, you're in shock. Then you realize you have two choices. You can give up, or you can fight. I chose to fight."In this Oct. 26 2015, file photo, running back Chris Johnson #23 of the Arizona Cardinals looks on in the second half of the NFL game against the Baltimore Ravens at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.Nils Nilsen/Getty Images, FILEThe former NFL star said his journey with ALS changed after watching an interview last year featuring ABC News' Diane Sawyer and the late actor Eric Dane, who died due to ALS in February, along with Dane's doctor at the time, Dr. Merit Cudkowicz, a neurologist and leading ALS researcher.Popular Reads"After watching 'Good Morning America' and seeing Dr. Merit with Eric Dane, we reached out to her," Chris Johnson said. "She was willing to think more creatively, offering experimental treatments that might help and advance research."He continued, "We've been with her ever since, and that changed the course of our fight."Cudkowicz, professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and executive director of the Mass General Brigham Neuroscience Institute, told "GMA" she believes Johnson’s participation in a clinical trial as part of his care may have helped in his fight against ALS."Chris has been on standard of care, which is about three different medications that slow down the illness," she said. "But he was also part of a clinical trial, a therapy that decreases inflammation, and I think that helped him a lot."Still, in Chris Johnson's case, the disease has progressed so rapidly that he now uses a speech-generating device to speak. Soon after his diagnosis, his voice was recorded, so his speech-generating device delivers a voice that sounds just like his."It's continued to progress much faster than I ever imagined. I want people to understand just how quickly ALS can attack your body," he said. "Just over a year ago, I was picking up my 7-year-old daughter so she'd make a wish with her birthday cake. Today, I couldn't do that."In this July 18, 2018, file photo, NFL player Chris Johnson attends The 2018 ESPYS at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images, FILEChris Johnson added that his wife and their children have kept him going through the medical obstacles since his diagnosis."She hasn't left my side through any of this," he said of Brittany Johnson. "My kids are also a huge part of why I keep going. Every day I wake up wanting more time with them to make more memories and just be their dad. They give me a reason to keep fighting."And for Brittany Johnson, though caregiving is "tough," she said she doesn't doubt supporting her husband through it all."Our life has shifted so much. It's a heavy workload," she said. "But I have no doubt that this is what, you know, I was called to do."The Johnsons said they are sharing their story to raise awareness of ALS and the need for ALS research. An effort to support ALS research in honor of Chris Johnson has been established at the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS, which Cudkowicz, his doctor, leads."I can't even hold a cup if I try, and that's despite being diagnosed relatively early and doing everything we can, including participating in multiple experimental treatments," Chris Johnson said. "That's why early detection, more research, and better treatments are so important. We have to give people a better chance than what's available today."He said he not only wants to share his story to raise awareness of ALS, but also to let people know that he is still the Chris Johnson they know from his NFL days and beyond."I want people to know that I'm still me. ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn't changed who I am," he said. "People sometimes look at the physical disability and assume you're not still the same person inside. I still think the same. I still dream. I still love my family. My body just doesn't cooperate."

Why Jane Seymour Avoids Yoga at 75: A Surprising Confession New

Why Jane Seymour Avoids Yoga at 75: A Surprising Confession

Jane Seymour has one surprising fitness confession at 75.Seymour relies on a routine that’s kept her energized for decades — one that’s built on movement, moderation and knowing her limits. The “Harry Wild” star said she avoids yoga because she’s “way too A-type,” joking that she’d try to outdo everyone in class.“Well, fitness, I try to do a combination of light weights, some walking, fast walking if I can, or up and down a hill. I do Pilates and Gyrotonics, or if I can’t do any of that, I do the usual thing, the sort of sit-ups and some ballet exercises,” she told Fox News Digital.“Actually, I go back to my ballet roots. I do a full barre. I eat a Mediterranean diet, usually. I stay away from starch, but not completely, because I never want to think I’m on a diet. I drink very moderately. When I’m filming, not at all.”Seymour said the secret to staying active isn’t pushing herself to do every trendy workout — it’s knowing her own limits.“I’ve had to actually tell myself that when I go into a group class, especially something like yoga, that I have to tell myself I am not going to win, because I’m way too A-type…”Jane Seymour relies on a routine that’s kept her energized for decades — one that’s built on movement, moderation and knowing her limits. FOX NewsShe continued, “I want to win… Which means that I can never have done yoga, and I will decide that I could turn myself into the pretzel like that person. No. No, I cannot. I’ll end up in the hospital or something, so… My approach is to try everything, but do it the way that I know I can. So, I listen to my body.”That mindset has helped fuel Seymour’s seemingly endless energy — something her longtime friend and former “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” co-star Joe Lando knows all too well.More than three decades after becoming one of television’s most beloved couples, the pair have reunited for Season 5 of “Harry Wild,” which returns to Acorn TV with bigger mysteries, higher stakes and a new character who could finally complicate Harry’s love life.Seymour said the secret to staying active isn’t pushing herself to do every trendy workout — it’s knowing her own limits. @janeseymour/InstagramSeymour stars as Harriet “Harry” Wild and also serves as an executive producer on the hit show.Their on-screen reunion is rooted in a friendship that’s outlasted Hollywood odds. When Fox News Digital asked how they’ve stayed close all these years, Seymour reflected on the bond they built while filming the hit Western drama.“Wow, I mean, that’s a really interesting question,” she said. “We worked together for seven years and we kind of fell for one another in the pilot, rather famously, for a brief time. So, we knew each other really, really well, better than on screen.”The pair eventually realized they were better off as friends, but Lando said one thing about Seymour has remained exactly the same since their “Dr. Quinn” days. The “Harry Wild” star said she avoids yoga because she’s “way too A-type,” joking that she’d try to outdo everyone in class. Getty Images for for Songwriters Hall Of Fame“This inexhaustible flipping energy,” he said. “She just goes, goes and goes.”Comparing Seymour to the Energizer Bunny, Lando recalled filming long production days while the actress was pregnant with twins.“45, pregnant with twins. We’re doing 12-hour-plus days sometimes,” he said. “I’d start feeling myself getting a little worn, and I would look over at her… suck it up, get out there and do the job. And that hasn’t changed about her.”Seymour credits her seemingly endless energy to one simple thing — loving what she does. When asked where her legendary stamina comes from, Seymour didn’t hesitate.“I know people keep asking me why, and I just say, because I love what I do,” she said. “I just do, you know, and then when I stop, I sleep.”AMC Global Media’s “Harry Wild” Season 5 streams exclusively on Acorn TV.

Johnson, the former Titans workhorse and one-time Jets running back, shared the news during an appearance on “Good Morning America.”“There’s no history of ALS in my family,” Johnson, now 40, shared in an interview with Michael Strahan. “My doctors believe my case is what’s called sporadic ALS, which is actually how the vast majority of ALS cases happen.” Chris Johnson revealed his ALS diagnosis in a heartbreaking story. Good Morning America“That’s one of the reasons this disease can be so shocking,” he added. “It can happen to someone who never expected it.”When asked about the diagnosis, Johnson said he would fight through it. “Honestly, I don’t know if you ever fully process it,” Johnson said. “At first, you’re in shock. Then you realize you have two choices. You can give up, or you can fight. I chose to fight.”Johnson says that his disease reared its ugly head when he was spending time with his wife, Brittany Johnson, and four kids, as he felt his right hand going a bit weaker than normal.“At first, it was little things like my grip didn’t feel right, and I wasn’t as strong as I’ve always been.”The Johnson family revealed that they had expected the issue to be related to his lengthy football career, as he was drafted in the first round in 2008 and had a 10-year NFL career after playing throughout his youth.“I thought because of football and, you know, his career, that it had to be something with that,” Brittany told Strahan. “Maybe … a pinched nerve or something along those lines, but never ALS.”ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, has an average life expectancy of three to five years, with about 10 percent of those diagnosed surviving for 10 or more years. From here, Johnson and his wife, Brittany, have chosen to undergo experimental treatments to help advance trials of new options for patients. Chris Johnson was once one fo the most prized running backs in the NFL. Getty Images“It’s continued to progress much faster than I ever imagined. I want people to understand just how quickly ALS can attack your body,” Johnson admitted. “Just over a year ago, I was picking up my 7-year-old daughter so she’d make a wish with her birthday cake. Today, I couldn’t do that.”Johnson starred for the Titans for his first six seasons, winning Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 after running for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns with 50 catches, 503 yards and two additional scores. The three-time Pro Bowler spent one year with the Jets in 2014 and played three seasons with the Cardinals to end his NFL career, which saw him run for 9,651 yards and 55 touchdowns.Johnson says while ALS has changed his body, it hasn’t changed who he is.“People sometimes look at the physical disability and assume you’re not still the same person inside,” he said. “I still think the same. I still dream. I still love my family. My body just doesn’t cooperate.”
