Super Typhoon Champi Halts Taiwan: Flights Canceled, Markets Shut Amid El Niño Fury

Updated 14:39 23 Oct 2026 GMT+1Published 11:21 23 Oct 2026 GMT+1One person has died from being swept away by waves, while the storm has also injured 171 people and forced 1,000 others to evacuateTaiwan has been brought to a near standstill as Typhoon Champi, one of the most powerful storms in the Pacific this year, has devastated the island.Hundreds of flights in East Asia have been cancelled on Friday (23 October), due to wind gusts of 191km/h (119mph) with 90cm (35in) of rain forecasted to last until Saturday evening.Officials say one person has died from being swept away by waves, while the storm has also injured 171 people and forced 1,000 others to evacuate.Taiwan’s $5tn (£3.7tn) financial markets, schools and government offices have been forced to shut across almost the entire island, with a population of 23 million people.AdvertChampi, which reached super typhoon status earlier this week, recorded maximum sustained winds of 298km/h (185mph) at its peak, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.Sandbags and flood barriers have been placed outside buildings as Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan (I-Hwa Cheng / AFP via Getty Images)It has been fuelled by a Super El Niño, which happens when normal, east-to-west trade winds weaken or reverse, causing warm water to pool along the Americas and disrupt global weather, often causing heavy rains in some regions and severe droughts in others. While there have been only a handful of these cases since 1950, the World Meteorological Organization said this El Niño is likely to strengthen over the rest of 2026, driving more extreme weather around much of the globe.“El Niño is the main driver,” said James Caron, director of meteorological operations for North America and Asia, at Atmospheric G2 told Bloomberg.“The biggest threat is extreme rain over northern and northeastern Taiwan.”Fishing boats are moored at a fishing harbour as Typhoon Champi approaches Taiwan (I-Hwa Cheng / AFP via Getty Images)“In late October the northeast monsoon is already in place, and a typhoon passing nearby pulls that flow into the island’s terrain,” he said, adding that it could potentially cause as much as 46cm (18in) over greater Taipei, risking catastrophic flash floods and landslides.CWA forecaster Liu Pei-teng told Reuters that landfall could not be ruled out if it ‘stalls, loops, or wobbles from side to side’.“The storm's wind radius is quite large, among the bigger ones in recent years," Liu said.“If the storm slows down, the strong winds will affect Taiwan for longer.”Lee Ming-chen, head of the port town of Suao noted that ‘when necessary, the military will come in to help people, including using amphibious vehicles for evacuations or disaster relief’.Hundreds of flights have been cancelled (Yasin Demirci/Anadolu via Getty Images)In Japan's southern Okinawa prefecture, approximately 8,400 households experienced power outages as the storm approached. The Philippines also suffered severe weather, particularly in the northern Batanes islands, where enormous waves struck coastal communities and roads were closed.Weather agencies predicted Champi would pass close to Taiwan's northeastern coastline before moving towards Japan's Okinawa islands and eventually curving northeast towards mainland Japan. However, meteorologists warned that unpredictable movements could still bring the storm directly over Taiwan.Heavy rainfall was expected to peak on Saturday morning, with dangerous conditions continuing into the evening.Featured Image Credit: Gallo Images/Orbital Horizon/Copernicus Sentinel Data 2026Topics: Weather, World News

Olivier Martinez Accuses Halle Berry of Abuse Despite Past Denial

Halle Berry’s ex-husband Olivier Martinez accused the actress of abuse despite being confronted with his own previous sworn statement denying any history of domestic violence between the former couple. The French actor was grilled by Berry’s attorney, Marina Beck, during cross-examination at Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday, marking the fourth consecutive day of proceedings in their ongoing custody dispute and domestic violence restraining order hearing.Beck questioned Martinez, 60, about allegations that the “Monster’s Ball” actress, 60, had abused him over the course of their relationship, including incidents he claimed dated back a decade.Halle Berry seen arriving for day four of her ongoing custody dispute and domestic violence restraining order hearing. London EntertainmentBerry’s ex-husband Olivier Martinez seen at Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday. BACKGRIDWhen asked whether he was alleging that Berry had committed acts of abuse against him dating back 10 years, Martinez replied, “Correct.”He also acknowledged alleging further abuse in 2023, including statements Berry purportedly made to their 13-year-old son, Maceo. However, Beck then presented Martinez with a declaration he signed under penalty of perjury on Sept. 30, 2024, in which he stated there had been no history of domestic violence between him and Berry. After Martinez confirmed that the signature on the document was his, Beck directed him to a section addressing the former couple’s history of domestic violence.Berry’s ex-husband was confronted with his own previous sworn statement denying any history of domestic violence between the former couple. London Entertainment“There is no history of domestic violence between the parties,” Beck read from the declaration.“That statement was true when you made it on September 30th, 2024, correct?” she asked.“Correct,” Martinez replied. The exchange appeared to highlight an inconsistency between Martinez’s previous sworn statement and his more recent allegations against Berry. However, Martinez’s attorney, Patrick Baghdaserians, told Page Six that the September 2024 declaration was related to a financial request, not the former couple’s custody dispute.Martinez accused Berry of choking their son during an alleged altercation at her home in September. BACKGRIDMartinez, seen in court on Tuesday, claimed the incident was part of a larger pattern of abusive behavior that caused the teenager emotional distress. London Entertainment“That was related to need-based attorneys fees, that’s a financial request,” Baghdaserians explained.“There was no conviction of domestic violence at the time so his statement is correct. At the time there was no restraining order ever requested, ever entered.”He added, “So the statement, it’s correct. There is no history of domestic violence restraining orders. But again, that is not for anything related to custody, it’s for need-based attorneys fees.”Berry, seen in court earlier this week, has denied the allegations. BACKGRIDThe “Cat Woman” actress, snapped walking into court earlier this week, testified first in their ongoing custody case, BACKGRIDThe testimony came during another contentious day in court for the former spouses.Berry testified earlier Thursday in a closed courtroom before Martinez was questioned by her attorney. The courtroom was later cleared as questioning turned to confidential matters involving the former couple’s 13-year-old son, Maceo. The latest developments follow testimony from the former couple’s son, who spent nearly four hours on the witness stand earlier this week. The teenager’s testimony was conducted behind closed doors.Berry’s daughter from a previous relationship is expected to testify.

Dan Aykroyd's Real-Life Ghostbuster Legacy: Great-Grandfather's Seance Transcripts Revealed

Dan Aykroyd's Real-Life Ghostbuster Legacy: Great-Grandfather's Seance Transcripts Revealed

Published 01:27 22 Oct 2026 GMT+1Dan Aykroyd has revealed the incredible family history that helped inspire him to write GhostbustersGhostbusters’ star Dan Aykroyd has revealed that his great-grandfather was a real-life ghostbuster and has the seance transcripts to prove it.The 74–year-old actor and comedian shot to fame as one of the original cast members on Saturday Night Live at its launch back in 1975.He later went on to star in a slew of hit comedies, including The Blues Brothers, Conheads, and Nothing but Trouble. But to many of us he’s best-known for playing Dr. Raymond ‘Ray’ Stantz in Ghostbusters, which he also co-wrote alongside Harold Ramis, who played Peter Venkman.AdvertAykroyd first played Ray in the original Ghostbusters flick in 1984 and the sequel - Ghostbusters II - in 1989 and reprised the role for 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and again in 2024’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. And it turns out that it was actually pretty spot on casting, as the legendary star has a real-life ghostbuster in his family.Dan Aykroyd revealed ghostbusting runs in the family (Eric Charbonneau/Getty Images for Sony)In a post on X, Aykroyd shared a snap of himself holding up a couple of bound manuscripts with the titles The Journals of a Kingston Spiritualist and Sitting for Materialisation as well as an old black and white photographer of a dapper looking gentleman dressed in a suit and tie and posing for the camera.Sharing the shots, Aykroyd revealed that the books were written by his great-grandfather, presumably the man in the black and white photo, and helped to inspire him to write Ghostbusters.“These are my great-grandfather Dr. Sam Aykroyd’s transcripts from the seances he hosted in the Old Farmhouse,” he shared.“It was the spirit of his work passed down through the generations that inspired my interests. He’s the original Ghostbuster.”Pretty cool, eh?Dr. Sam Aykroyd was a mystic, who had corresponded with Sherlock Holmes writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle on the subject of Spiritualism. And the interest in the unknown didn’t end with him, as Aykroyd has previously declared a ‘proud’ Spiritualist.“I am a Spiritualist, a proud wearer of the Spiritualist badge,” he is reported to have said.“Mediums and psychic research have gone on for many, many years ... Loads of people have seen spirits, heard a voice, or felt the cold temperature. I believe that they are between here and there, that they exist between the fourth and fifth dimensions, and that they visit us frequently.”As well as ghosts, he is interested in various other aspects of paranormal phenomenon including UFOs and aliens, and is a lifetime member of and official Hollywood consultant for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).His interest in the supernatural and unexplained has led to him serving as the host of Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal from 1996 to 2000 and producing a one-off special titled Dan Aykroyd: Unplugged on UFOs.His dad, Peter Aykroyd, has also published a book titled A History of Ghosts, in which he detailed the family’s historical involvement with the Spiritualist movement. With such a long-line of ghostbusters and paranormal experts in the family, it’s little surprise that Aykroyd grew up to write Ghostbusters, isn’t it?Featured Image Credit: X/@dan_aykroydTopics: Celebrity, TV and Film

A New York City native became an ISIS bride at just 18 — and is now the first woman to face trial in the US as an alleged member of the ruthless terror group.Halima Salman, now 27, has been painted by Brooklyn federal prosecutors as an ISIS-trained machine gun-toting wannabe killer, showing footage of the young woman wielding an AK-47 assault rifle in her terrorist husband’s Syria home.“The evidence shows that the defendant received training from a violent, brutal, terrorist organization, an organization responsible for violent attacks all over the world,” Assistant US Attorney Amanda Shami told the jury Wednesday during closing statements in the week-long trial. The feds say the Brooklyn-born Salman was a teenager when her dad moved the family — including her mother and eight siblings — to ISIS-controlled territory about a decade ago. At 18, she was married to ISIS member Abu Ali.Jurors were shown the footage of Salman, pointing an AK-47 while walking back and forth in Ali’s Syria home, saying “You have to walk like…” before sheepishly asking if he was filming her.She was allegedly taught how to use the weapon by Nusaybah Katiba, a female-only ISIS battalion, prosecutors said.Halima Salman testified that she spent two years in an arranged marriage to an ISIS fighter in Syria. US. Eastern District.“I submit to you that this is not her first time with a weapon,” Shami told the court. But jurors heard a sharply dueling narrative when Salman took the stand earlier this week in the unprecedented case.Salman is out on $500,000 bond and has been living with relatives in New Hampshire, court records say. Gregory P. Mango for NY PostThe alleged would-be terrorist testified in her own defense that she does not support the terror group, despite evidence that she posed for a selfie in front of an ISIS flag during her marriage to Ali.“I believe that ISIS did very scary things which deceive the way Islam is visioned,” she told the jury in an emotional day on the stand on Monday, the New York Daily News reported.Salman testified that her ISIS-supporting father — killed in an US airstrike in 2018 — forced her to wed Ali after moving the family to an area in Syria controlled by the twisted terror group.Ali’s family paid Salman’s father a dowry of $5,000 for the arranged marriage, held in a dingy room that looked like a garage, she said.“I was scared. I had a very bad feeling about it. I was wondering if this was what was supposed to happen to me. My heart was burning,” Salman told the jury, according to Courthouse News.Salman sat calmly in a white hoodie and olive green hijab Wednesday afternoon as prosecutors displayed another key piece of evidence — a digital image of a paper document purportedly from ISIS saying she was qualified to carry a Kalashnikov rifle and 250 rounds of ammunition.Investigators recovered the letter from her husband’s phone, prosecutors said, though Salman’s lawyers with the Federal Defenders of New York have questioned the authenticity of the alleged ISIS training certificate. They’ve also argued that the government has not provided any further evidence related to her purported ISIS training, including what exactly she was allegedly trained to do.Brandy Salman, Halima’s mother, has attended the Brooklyn trial in support of her daughter. Gregory P. Mango for NY PostBorn in Brooklyn in 1999 to an American mother and a Turkish father, she fondly recalled family barbeques in Prospect Park and visiting the zoo and local museums, Courthouse News reported.Salman, who has been living with relatives in New Hampshire while out on $500,000 bond, faces a maximum 10-year sentence if convicted on a charge of knowingly receiving military training from a terrorist organization. But her father moved the family to Turkey in September 2016, and to an ISIS-controlled part of Syria soon afterward, she testified. She told jurors that she spent two years in ISIS territory and then five years in a detention center run by the Kurdish regime that dismantled the terror group with the help of the US.Salman was arrested in 2024 at JFK Airport in Queens after she and nine other members of her family were repatriated as part of an extensive State Department effort to bring back American citizens held in the detention centers. Her ISIS terrorist ex-husband is believed to be in an Iraqi jail, according to a law enforcement source.None of her relatives are facing charges, and her mother Brandy, a native of Arkansas, is attending the trial in support of her daughter. The trial resumes Thursday morning with a closing statement from Salman’s defense team. Jurors are expected to begin deliberations by Thursday afternoon.

Published 20:39 21 Oct 2026 GMT+1The series drops just in time for HalloweenStephen Graham's will return to our screens in a serial killer role which has already earned him comparisons with Hannibal Lecter the Silence of the Lambs. There's no doubting Graham's skills as an actor, which were reinforced with his brilliant performance in the recent Netflix series Adolescence, but if he can get even close to what the great Anthony Hopkins managed in the 1991 horror classic, then it will do his chances of another Emmy win no harm. The 53-year-old actor will portray the murderous Jurek Walter in an upcoming Apple TV series and fans are no doubt excited to see him take to the screen once again following his recent appearances in Bunker and Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.The New York Times describe Graham's character as 'a serial killer, so intelligent and seductive he seems to be able to murder people from beyond his maximum-security cell, matches wits with a world-weary, brilliant cop'.AdvertNocturne will release on the platform on 30 October and also stars Liev Schreiber and Zazie Beetz, who will play FBI agents trying to save a small town in Pennsylvania, as well as their own families. The show is based on two books, 'The Sandman' and 'Lazarus', which were written by husband and wife duo Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril. Test Altroconsumo: Le creme corpo economiche superano quelle costose

Test Altroconsumo: Le creme corpo economiche superano quelle costose
