Trump's Bold Move: Lake Ontario's Surprising New Name Sparks Debate New

Trump's Bold Move: Lake Ontario's Surprising New Name Sparks Debate

President Donald Trump called Apple about changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in the hopes of getting them to alter their maps, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Monday.Trump announced Lake Ontario would now be called Lake America on Thursday, as part of his trade feud with Canada. Google Maps has already updated its system to reflect the change, but Apple users using the company's own map will still see Lake Ontario when they open the page. They also can't search for Lake America to get directions. However, that may be changing.During an interview with Fox Business' Mornings With Maria, Burgum told guest host Cheryl Casone, who was filling in for host Maria Bartiromo, that Trump reached out to Apple directly."I know that the president reached out to Apple directly, so I'm sure that we may be seeing that change coming up soon to Lake America," Burgum said.Burgum added that Trump signing the executive order for the name change, it requires the Department of Interior's Board of Geographic Names to change the name on their software, which "cascades down to all the map providers." Newsweek reached out to Apple for comment via email but did not receive a response in time for publication.Which Maps Are Changing Lake Ontario to Lake AmericaGoogle announced that U.S. users of Google Maps would see “Lake America,” while Canadian users would continue to see “Lake Ontario” and users elsewhere would see both names."These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now," Google said in a blog post on Saturday. In a social media post, MapQuest said it won't be changing the name of Lake Ontario. MapQuest has since surged to the number one downloaded Navigation application. The company also refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in early 2025, but gave users the opportunity to name their own gulf. A similar tool was created for people to be able to name their own lake. Waze still has Lake Ontario labeled Lake Ontario on its map. Newsweek has reached out to Waze for comment via email but did not receive a response in time for publication....Trade Tensions and the Executive OrderTrump's decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” is the latest flashpoint in his administration’s escalating dispute with Canada and follows a pattern of symbolic geographic rebranding efforts that he has championed since returning to office. On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of the Interior to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” in U.S. federal records and mapping systems, declaring the move effective immediately. The order instructed federal agencies and the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the government’s official geographic database, to adopt the new name for federal use.The White House framed the change as a recognition of the lake’s importance to U.S. history, commerce, defense and exploration. According to the executive order, the administration argued that the United States possesses much of the lake’s volume and that the waterway has long served as a significant American asset. Trump said he had completed all of the necessary paperwork and notifications required for the change. The move came amid rapidly worsening relations between Washington and Ottawa. In the days leading up to the order, trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada had collapsed, triggering a new round of tariffs and counter-tariffs. The Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian goods, while Canada announced retaliatory duties on a wide range of American products. Trump repeatedly linked the name change to his broader criticism of Canada’s trade policies, accusing the country of unfairly benefiting from its economic and security relationship with the U.S.Regional Pushback and Indigenous HeritageLake Ontario is one of North America’s five Great Lakes and sits along the border between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. The lake has carried the name “Ontario” for centuries. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the name derives from the Wendat word “Ontari’io,” meaning “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,” and predates both the U.S. and the modern Canadian state. He argued that the historic name reflects Indigenous heritage and should remain unchanged.Canadian officials quickly rejected the executive order. Carney stated that Canada would continue referring to the body of water as Lake Ontario. Ontario Premier Doug Ford similarly dismissed the effort and unveiled signage declaring “Lake Ontario—Now and Always.” The Seneca Nation, whose ancestral territory is connected to the region, also criticized the renaming and urged the administration to reverse the decision, arguing that the traditional name honors Indigenous peoples who lived around the lake long before the creation of either country.New York Governor Kathy Hochul, whose state is the only U.S. state bordering Lake Ontario, said New York would not adopt the new name. The renaming echoes Trump’s earlier executive action changing “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” for U.S. federal use. As with that move, the Lake Ontario order does not compel foreign governments, international bodies or private mapmakers to adopt the new terminology. However, some companies have updated their products to reflect the federal designation. Contact Newsweek editors for this story: John Fitzpatrick and Anthony Murray.

Why South Carolina's New SNAP Ban on Junk Food Is Stirring Debate New

Why South Carolina's New SNAP Ban on Junk Food Is Stirring Debate

Southern shoppers are bracing for a crackdown on junk food.New SNAP restrictions will prohibit some shoppers at Walmart and other major grocery stores from buying certain controversial items in South Carolina.Under the Southern state’s new policy, SNAP shoppers will no longer be able to use their benefits to purchase sugary foods and drinks.South Carolina’s junk food crackdown will begin on November 1, 2026, according to the state’s Department of Social Services.Long known as food stamps, SNAP provides food assistance to eligible households and supports approximately 42 million Americans. In certain states, SNAP shoppers will no longer be able to use their benefits to purchase sugary foods and drinks at Walmart and other major grocery stores. Gado via Getty ImagesThe monthly benefit, which is delivered on debit cards that can be used only for groceries, is $344 per household on average.Under the federal statute, SNAP benefits can generally be applied to any food intended for home consumption with the exception of alcohol, tobacco, and hot prepared foods. In South Carolina, the new policy will restrict the purchase of candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and sweetened beverages across the state, including at grocery stores, convenience stores, farmers’ markets, and online retailers. The candy ban encompasses chocolate, fruit or nut-based bars, drops and pieces; however, protein and granola bars will still be allowed. The beverage ban also excludes coffee, tea, milk-based beverages and the majority of fruit and vegetable juices. Other exemptions include baby formula, sports drinks, carbonated water and medically necessary beverages.Items that used to be SNAP-eligible may no longer ring up at checkout, and/or customers could see “item not allowed” messages when trying to buy groceries online or with an EBT card.Items that used to be SNAP-eligible may no longer ring up at checkout, and/or customers could see “item not allowed” messages when trying to buy groceries online or with an EBT card. Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty ImagesCustomers can still purchase these restricted items with another form of payment, including self-checkout — but they may run into issues at the ring-up. For in-store purchases, experts recommend opting for regular checkout over self-checkout, as cashiers may be able to provide clarity and assistance. For shoppers confused about what items are and are not included in the ban, consider using full-service checkout aisles, or online shopping, to check individual eligibility. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service approved the program after a waiver request was made by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.“Thank you to President Trump and Secretary Rollins for approving our light-touch, common-sense approach to strengthen the SNAP program by promoting healthier outcomes for South Carolinians,” Governor Henry McMaster said in a news release. The new policy will restrict the purchase of candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, and sweetened beverages across the state, including at grocery stores, convenience stores, farmers’ markets, and online retailers. AFP via Getty Images“By encouraging families to purchase healthy, nutritious food – and not junk food – we ensure federal taxpayer dollars are used to their maximum benefit and keep South Carolina at the forefront of the effort to Make America Healthy Again.”In March, SNAP participants in several states sued the USDA over the approval of state-specific waivers that prohibited the purchase of certain items through the SNAP program, claiming the agency lacked authority to decree which foods qualify for purchase.Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the US District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the waivers violated Congress’s definition of “food” and unlawfully redefined which foods could be purchased through the food assistance program.“Congress defined what ‘food’ is supposed to be, and it did not authorize the agency to amend or waive the definition it enacted,” the judge wrote. “It did not authorize the agency to cut types of food out of SNAP entirely.”Further, a report by the National Grocers Association and other industry trade groups estimated that implementing SNAP restrictions would cost US retailers $1.6 billion initially and $759 million annually thereafter. The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service approved the program after a waiver request was made by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images“Punishing SNAP recipients means we all get to pay more at the grocery store,” said Gina Plata-Nino, SNAP director for the anti-hunger advocacy group Food Research & Action Center.Waiver advocates, including Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., claimed these measures would ensure SNAP funds were not used to buy health-compromising, highly processed foods.“We cannot continue a system that forces taxpayers to fund programs that make people sick and then pay a second time to treat the illnesses those very programs help create,” Kennedy said in a statement in December. In June, the US District Court for the District of Columbia ordered that FNA’s approval of the waiver be vacated and that the waiver’s implementation may not proceed in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and West Virginia.Meanwhile, other states are moving forward with their waivers.Earlier this year, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah began enacting similar restrictions on the purchase of soda, sugary drinks, candy, and other “unhealthy” optionsMeanwhile, Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Ohio, Virginia, and Wyoming have plans to begin restrictions as soon as next month.

Gökçek Ailesi Hakkındaki Şok İddialar! Soruşturma Nereye Varacak? New

Kelly Osbourne's Unique Parenting Approach Has Everyone Talking New

Kelly Osbourne's Unique Parenting Approach Has Everyone Talking

Kelly Osbourne is learning alongside her 3-year-old son, Sidney, as she navigates parenthood. "I've learnt patience in a way I never thought I was capable of," Osbourne, 41, shared in an interview with Hello! published on Monday, August 31. "You can't make your kids be anything — they will become exactly who they want to be. When he’s dysregulated, I just sit with him and let him go through it. I don't try to control his feelings, because they're his.” She continued, "Sometimes, yeah, it's really f***ing hard and really f***ing annoying! But I want him to have his voice, and to feel confident enough to express himself." As Sidney paves his own way, Osbourne shared that she’s “never explained gender” to him. "I don't believe it's a concept that a 3-year-old boy needs to try to understand," Osbourne explained. "You like what you like, and that's it. One day he loves Gabby's Dollhouse, and the next day we're at Rugbytots and he's loving every moment of the physicality and the rough play.” She continued, "When he meets someone, he naturally addresses them by how they present. I've never taught him that; he does it on his own. I think that's so special." Osbourne welcomed her son with Sid Wilson in 2022. Three years later, Wilson proposed to Kelly at her dad Ozzy Osbourne’s final concert with Black Sabbath in July 2025. (Ozzy died later that month after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 76.) In March, the Daily Mail reported that Kelly and Wilson had split and called off their engagement. Nearly two weeks later, Kelly took to Instagram to share a series of photos from a mother-son outing to Odds Farm Park in England with Sidney. “Yesterday I spent the day with Baby Sidney at @oddsfarmpark,” her caption read at the time. “We had the time of our lives. He got to meet the Easter bunny but I think his favorite part was learning about and meeting the bees . We feed animal explored the play grounds and went down the mega rainbow slide ! It was literally the best day ever! ‍‍.” Before Kelly’s split from Wilson, she was candid about how their son changed her life. “I truly believe my baby saved me and made me a whole human,” Kelly said in her October 2024 Us cover story. “I don’t think I knew what love was before having a baby.” She continued, “I don’t remember life before having the baby because everything has changed. I didn’t realize just how powerful the feeling of love was [going to be] when you have the baby. It’s the most … addictive feeling I have ever felt. You realize in that one second, ‘You’ve given me purpose like nothing has ever given me before.’ I don’t think I had purpose.”

Kevin Sorbo's Bold Exit: Why He's Leaving California Behind New

Kevin Sorbo's Bold Exit: Why He's Leaving California Behind

Kevin Sorbo has officially closed the door on California.Nearly seven years after leaving the Golden State for Florida, the “Hercules” star says he has no interest in going back — and he’s got three reasons why: “Taxes, traffic and negativity.”In an interview with Fox News Digital, Sorbo, who stars in the faith-based movie “Elijah Peel,” said his move to Florida has given him something he felt was increasingly difficult to find in California — “acceptance.”The actor said he still misses Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, his golf course, his old house and California’s famously mild weather. But the trade-off, he said, isn’t worth it.“I mean, here in Florida, yeah, we get five months of pretty high humidity. It’s pretty hot, but the winters here are really quite amazing,” Sorbo said. “But yeah, there are things I miss, but they can keep their taxes, they can keep their traffic, and they can keep their negativity, I’m done.”For Sorbo, the California exit wasn’t simply a change of scenery.Kevin Sorbo says he is never returning to California, slamming Hollywood for blacklisting stars who hold conservative and Christian views. Kathryn Indiek/ImageDirectThe actor said the independent film community has embraced him, with filmmakers and creators from across the country reaching out through his production company, Sorbo Studios.“The people I’ve met here, the contacts I’ve met, it’s been incredible,” he said.Sorbo took aim at the entertainment industry, which he believes has punished people for holding certain political or religious views. The actor, who has been outspoken about his faith and politics, compared Hollywood’s treatment of conservatives and Christians to childish antics seen in schools, not a multimillion-dollar industry.Sorbo attends Moods of Norway at Studio on Main with The PhotoFund and Animal Avengers on Jan. 22, 2011 in Park City, Utah. WireImage“That’s why I find a lot of things in Hollywood, with their blacklisting people that have conservative or Christian viewpoints, I find it like they’re seventh grade mean girls,” Sorbo told Fox News Digital.“It’s just ridiculous and childish to me. We all have different opinions. There’s nothing wrong with that.”Sorbo has previously described himself as someone who has been “canceled” for his views. But he said the experience hasn’t convinced him to stay quiet.Instead, he’s challenging other conservatives in Hollywood to stop hiding.Governor Gavin Newsom speaking at an event about clean energy and electric vehicles. Anadolu via Getty Images“It’s the conservatives that are in the closet now because they saw me get canceled,” Sorbo said. “But I’m still working.”Sorbo’s comments came as his latest film, “Elijah Peel,” hit theaters — a faith-based drama inspired by a true story. The movie follows a rock star whose meteoric career and struggle with addiction spiral after a near-fatal heart attack. A young girl’s faith ultimately forces him to confront the life he’s been living.Sorbo portrays the musician’s longtime talent manager.Willie and Korie Robertson of “Duck Dynasty” serve as executive producers, adding another prominent Christian entertainment connection to the project. The actor said he still misses Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, his golf course, his old house and California’s famously mild weather. But the trade-off, he said, isn’t worth it.And Sorbo believes movies like “Elijah Peel” demonstrate that faith-based filmmakers no longer need Hollywood’s blessing. The audience is already there, he argued.“There’s 80 million homes in America that want the kind of movies that I’ve been fortunate to be part of — that is going to keep on growing,” Sorbo said.Away from the cameras, Sorbo said his marriage and family have remained his top priorities through career changes, health scares and the ups and downs of life in Hollywood.Sorbo also opened up about the nearly three decades he has spent married to his wife, Sam, crediting humor, compromise and family for keeping their relationship strong.Sorbo took aim at the entertainment industry, which he believes has punished people for holding certain political or religious views. When Fox News Digital asked about the foundation of his marriage, Sorbo laughed and replied, “Oh, that’s easy. I just say yes to her all the time. I just agree with everything she tells me.”He added, “We have our disagreements, but we’ve always gone through those with no problem. And we’ve overcome those things.”Family remains the priority, Sorbo emphasized.“My boys are now 24 and 22, my daughter’s 20.”The Sorbos are also outspoken advocates for homeschooling, with Sorbo’s wife traveling around the country to share what they see as the benefits of educating children outside the traditional public-school system.“We never experienced terrible teens with my kids. We just didn’t. They’re hardworking, they’re awesome, and they’re just good people,” Sorbo said.

Donald Trump Threatens FCC Action Over NBC's Kristen Welker Comments New

Donald Trump Threatens FCC Action Over NBC's Kristen Welker Comments

President Donald Trump has claimed that NBC journalist Kristen Welker “will be reported” to the Federal Communications Commission over comments made during a promotional segment for Meet the Press. “Kristen Welker, the unpopular “hostess” of the once great Meet the Press, now considered Meet the Fake Press, just stated that Donald Trump has “mixed results” on his endorsements of candidates, when the recent WINS of Darline Graham and Mike Mazzei, stand at 100% for the U.S. Senate, and 98% for the U.S. House, recently and over the long term,” the president, 80, wrote via his Truth Social account on Sunday, August 30. He continued, “How can anyone be allowed to say this, working for freely given Public Airwaves? Because of this purposeful inaccuracy, she will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment.” The president attached a graph that showed alleged endorsement records from the Republican primaries, which contradict comments made by Welker, 50, during an appearance on NBC’s local Washington, D.C. station that pointed to upcoming Meet the Press coverage. The journalist, who began serving as moderator on the news program in 2023, said during the appearance that the primaries showed “mixed results,” per reporting on Sunday by CNN. The outlet stated that NBC’s recent reporting backed up Welker’s commentary. A spokesperson for NBC told CNN on Sunday, “Kristen is one of the best in the business and we stand by her.” FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez also took to X on Sunday to respond to the president’s FCC claim. “As I’ve said many times, the FCC has no authority to punish journalists this administration doesn't like,” she wrote. “These threats to press freedom are dangerous. They undermine the foundation of our democracy, and they have no place in it.” The president’s social media post stated that Welker was “not the only” journalist or member of the media to report alleged inaccuracy. “The radical left news is going out of their way to harass, demean, and libel anything “TRUMP.” Their new weapon is to say that my 99% SUCCESS rate on endorsements, 100% on senatorial endorsements (many of whom were not even given a shot of winning until I endorsed!), is either a mixed result, or not very good,” he continued. “In actuality, it is, without question, the strongest endorsement in the history of politics.” He concluded, “The Press is a disgrace to our nation, and I hope that [FCC] chairman Brendan Carr, and the fine people of his commission, will take this threat to our country very seriously. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter of fake polls and commentary!”
