Plaza Hotel's Sudden Closure Leaves Brides Scrambling to Save Six-Figure Weddings New

Plaza Hotel's Sudden Closure Leaves Brides Scrambling to Save Six-Figure Weddings

It went from a fairy tale to a fiasco. Numerous brides who had booked six-figure weddings at New York City’s legendary — and ultra-luxury — Plaza Hotel have been left scrambling to find altar-nate venues after the bombshell announcement that it was closing in January for at least four years.Christine Carney, whose costly May 1 wedding had been booked almost a year in advance, only learned that her dream day was dashed when a friend texted her about the closure. The 38-year-old Chicago-based bride, who had wanted to tie the knot at the opulent hotel since childhood, told The Post she spent seven agonizing minutes on hold with the hotel’s concierge — before being told that her 200-guest wedding was suddenly without a venue. The Plaza Hotel will be closed for years for renovations. Chad Rachman/NY PostTo make matters worse, she told The Post, “We haven’t yet had anyone from the plaza reach out to tell us what next steps are and what happens with our money. The photographer, band, flowers, and rentals have all been secured with deposits, while her rehearsal dinner and welcome party are still up in the air.Christine posing for engagement pictures. Claudia Lumperdean“Everything for spring books up so quickly we would have to hope they’re willing to refund us so we can find a replacement, or we’d have to eat the deposit and find a replacement anyway,” she groaned.“I’m definitely frustrated and disappointed that this happened, and I’m anxious to figure out what the next steps will be.”And with save-the-dates already sent, downsizing isn’t an option. So for her, the show must go on.The question is just where… and when. And that part is sending high-end event planners into a frenzy.Christine and her fiance posing together. Claudia LumperdeanFor Alyssa Pettinato, owner of Alinato Events and Carney’s wedding planner, the sudden shutdown means planning the entire extravagant affair all over again — for free.“Technically, we are getting penalized as planners,” Pettinato told The Post. “Am I allowed to ask them for payment for this?”The planner said the wedding band has already been difficult about a possible date change, creating yet another expensive headache. And the predicament isn’t entirely unheard of: Pettinato said this is the third wedding she’s had to replan this year because of venue-related disruptions.Guests attend a lavish event in The Plaza Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. Rabbani and Solimene Photography/Getty Images for FITBut the veteran event planner says the announcement feels out of left field and, for a place as prestigious as the Plaza, the lack of communication has been particularly shocking.Pettinato said she was still working with hotel employees on room-block contracts when news of the closure broke — and believes staff members were completely unaware.“People who have been working there for decades are blindsided,” she said. “It feels like it was a leak because they seem extremely ill-prepared.”Hannah Livingstone, a 30-year-old bride from Scotland, booked eight nights in a Plaza suite for roughly $9,000.00 and splurged on first-class flights to New York for an intimate February wedding with her partner, James McPherson.A general view of one of the ballrooms. WireImageA lifelong fan of American romantic comedies and Sex and the City, Livingstone planned a first look to capture the moment the couple sees each other for the first time in the Plaza’s bar, wedding photographs, and even dress-steaming services.Instead, she discovered the hotel was closing while scrolling TikTok—a rather 1-star experience.“I thought, no, that surely can’t be right,” Livingstone told The Post.Just weeks earlier, she’d been in contact with the hotel to firm up her booking and preparation for the day.“It’s a bit mad to me that they’ve still been taking bookings and still being in contact like things are as normal,” she said, adding that she is still yet to hear directly from the hotel and her wedding is 4 months away. The hotel offers bridal suites and entire experiences designed to make a wedding memorable. Steven Chrappa“I’m quite stressed out obviously.”The couple still plans to marry in New York on the same date, but finding another comparable hotel has been disappointing, and the timing couldn’t be worse.“I’m actually going away this weekend for my hen do, so obviously I was very upset last night,” the bride said. “It has come at a pretty rubbish time.”The hotel management has attributed the closure to extensive restoration work on its landmark-protected façade, citing the undertaking’s complexity and safety considerations. But some planners familiar with the venue told The Post that the hotel’s gilded grandeur hides interiors that have begun to show their age.Brides are now scrambling since their Plaza-planned weddings are being canceled. Rabbani and Solimene Photography/Getty Images for FITCasey Kaufman, founder of Imagine Party and Events, has planned numerous lavish affairs at the Plaza over the years and estimates weddings at the legendary landmark can run upward of $1,200 per guest — with elaborate celebrations easily reaching $500,000 or more.Kaufman recalled one wedding where her team essentially built an entirely new room inside a Plaza event space, erecting temporary walls to conceal the originals. At another, they installed new window treatments to disguise dated architectural features.“I’ve taken people to the Plaza recently, and they’re just like, it’s dated,” she said, noting that costly décor upgrades can pile onto an already astronomical bill. With the newly renovated Waldorf Astoria back in business, Kaufman speculated the hotel may have felt pressure to keep up, adding that she’d be surprised if it didn’t use the four-year closure to refresh its ballrooms, too. Many are devastated over their Plaza dreams being over, thanks to year-long renovations. Zach Hilty/BFA.com/ShutterstockStill, she emphasized that the Plaza’s name, history and prestige are nearly impossible to replicate.“I’ve had clients who came to me before they got engaged and said, ‘I know I’m getting married at the Plaza,’” Kaufman said, recalling couples determined to follow in their grandparents’ footsteps. And weddings aren’t the only ones getting the boot. The Russian Children’s Welfare Society announced that its annual Petroushka Ball, held in February and a fixture of New York’s charity gala circuit, can no longer be held at the Plaza next year. The shutdown will also put other quintessential Plaza experiences on hold, from extravagant birthday celebrations in the Eloise Suite or the Home Alone 2 experience. As for refunds on deposits, Pettinato hopes the hotel will be fair.“Your contract could say whatever you wanted to say, but are you going to blow up your reputation by fighting something that’s technically immoral,” she argued. “That’s where it gets a little blurry. Something of the caliber of The Plaza, like I would expect them to give everyone a refund and not even fight that.”In response to The Post’s inquiry, the Plaza provided only its public statement and offered no further details about affected bookings or refunds.

6 Surprising Ways Your Environment Shapes Your Perception New

6 Surprising Ways Your Environment Shapes Your Perception

1. Color Can Influence Your Mood and DecisionsColors are not just visual stimuli; they have a profound impact on our emotions and choices. For instance, blue is often associated with calmness and can make you feel more relaxed, while red might increase your heart rate and make you more alert. This is why many restaurants use warm colors to stimulate appetite. Understanding this can help you make better decisions, like choosing a blue room for relaxation or a red outfit for a confidence boost.2. Background Noise Alters How You Process InformationThe presence of background noise can significantly affect your cognitive abilities. Studies show that moderate noise levels can enhance creative thinking by providing just enough distraction to break focus, allowing novel ideas to surface. However, too much noise can overwhelm and impair concentration. This is why many people find they work better with soft music or ambient sounds rather than complete silence or loud environments.3. Lighting Conditions Affect Your Perception of TimeThe type and intensity of light you're exposed to can skew your perception of time. Bright, natural light helps maintain your circadian rhythms, making time feel like it flows naturally. In contrast, dim or artificial lighting can distort this perception, often making time seem to drag. This is why workplaces benefit from natural light, as it can enhance productivity and reduce fatigue.4. Physical Clutter Can Impact Your Mental StateA cluttered environment doesn't just affect physical space; it also influences mental clarity. Excessive clutter can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety, making it difficult to focus. This is because your brain is constantly processing visual stimuli, and clutter demands more cognitive resources. Organizing your space can lead to a more peaceful and productive mindset.5. Scent Can Trigger Vivid Memories and EmotionsSmells are powerful triggers for memories and emotions because of their direct link to the brain's limbic system. A particular scent can instantly transport you back to a specific time or place, evoking strong emotional responses. This is why aromatherapy uses specific scents to promote relaxation or invigoration, illustrating the profound effect scent has on our perception and mood.6. Temperature Influences Social PerceptionsWarm environments can make you perceive others as more friendly and approachable, while colder temperatures might create a sense of social distance. This phenomenon, known as the "warmth heuristic," suggests that physical warmth can translate into emotional warmth. Being aware of this can help you use temperature strategically in social settings, such as turning up the heat to foster a more welcoming atmosphere.

Bus driver loses disability claim after ‘significant flatulence’ prompted hygiene complaint New

Bus driver loses disability claim after ‘significant flatulence’ prompted hygiene complaint

Published 20:39 16 Oct 2026 GMT+1An ‘episode’ occurred before a co-worker noticed the lingering odour when she started her shift A bus driver who was sacked has lost her disability discrimination and harassment claim against her employer over a farting incident.Stephanie Bryan from Bristol had been working for bus company the Big Lemon when she experienced flatulence so bad a colleague suspected she had soiled herself, a tribunal heard. The employment tribunal heard that Ms Bryan had allegedly produced ‘significant flatulence’ before her co-worker noticed the lingering odour.Fellow employee Samantha Bingham, who had smelt the alleged stench when she started her shift and sat in the same seat, had concluded that Ms Bryan had soiled herself.AdvertThe tribunal heard of an incident in January 2025, in which Ms Bingham 'became aware of a significant odour whilst working in proximity' of Ms Bryan, and 'genuinely believed the odour emanated' from her. Stephanie Bryan worked for the Big Lemon bus company (The Big Lemon)"She had sat in the driver’s seat of the bus shortly before she commenced her duties on the bus," Judge Jonathan Walters said. "The Tribunal accepts the evidence that the odour was consistent with faecal matter potentially caused by significant flatulence which had led to soiling and was not associated with urine or urinary incontinence."After retuning home, Ms Bingham's partner also sensed the smell and asked if she had defected, meaning she had to wash her clothes and 'immediately' take a shower, the tribunal was told."The episode had been so significant that when the second respondent returned home that evening her partner asked her whether she had in fact soiled herself" the judge said."She was obliged to remove all her clothing and place them in the washing machine and she then immediately took a shower."As per the tribunal, When Ms Bingham confronted Bryan over the incident, she allegedly said in her defence: "Everyone needs to fart and let out gases."The bus driver tried to sue her employer (Getty Stock)However the tribunal heard that Ms Bryan reacted ‘negatively’ to the accusations, despite Ms Bingham being ‘genuinely and reasonably concerned by the situation she found herself in’."The Tribunal is satisfied that the second respondent was raising a genuine workplace concern with the claimant," the document read."The concerns about hygiene were also raised sensitively and appropriately in private."Ms Bryan was let go from her job with The Big Lemon following the incident following a probation review. The tribal said she had been on a three-month probation period from September 2024, which was extended to January 2025 due to ‘concerns regarding her performance’.However the bus driver went on to sue the company for disability discrimination and harassment, alleging that she was treated unfairly. The tribunal heard that issues were also brought up to Ms Bryan about personal hygiene, and found the concerns 'related not to bladder weakness but to body odour and had arisen from complaints made by colleagues', finding that the probation meeting was 'conducted appropriately'.Stephanie Bryan was behind the wheel when she allegedly produced ‘significant flatulence’ (Getty Stock)The hearing also found that Ms Bryan did not inform the bus company bosses of her depression or existing bladder weakness and that therefore management did not know whether these could contribute to hygiene problems. The Bristol Employment Tribunal later rejected her claims, ruling that Ms Bryan’s complaints were not related to her health. It was instead ruled that Ms Bingham had raised ‘a genuine workplace concern’, and there was ‘absolutely no evidence before the tribunal that[she had any knowledge of the claimed disabilities nor ought she reasonably to have known about them’.The hearing dismissed both the discrimination and harassment claims"The Tribunal is not satisfied that any unfavourable treatment was because of something arising in consequence of her disabilities," the judge said. “The dismissal occurred because management genuinely and reasonably concluded that [Ms Bryan] had failed satisfactorily to complete her probationary period."Featured Image Credit: The Big LemonTopics: UK News

Texas drunk driver gets seven years—and annual jail stays on victims’ birthdays

A drunk driver was sentenced to seven years behind bars for fatally plowing down a college student and seriously injuring another in Texas in 2023 — and must return to jail for 15 days annually, including Christmas, her birthday and the victims’ birthdays, for a decade after she’s released. Lynlee Pollis, 30, was convicted of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault for killing Southern Methodist University student Honor Wallace and leaving the college student’s pal Catherine “CeCe” Solberg seriously injured in a drunken crash in Dallas in September 2023, The Dallas Morning News reported. Lynlee Pollis, 30, was sentenced to seven years behind bars for fatally plowing down a college student and seriously injuring another in 2023. Dallas County JailSouthern Methodist University student Honor Wallace, 19, was killed in the drunken crash. University Liggett SchoolIn addition to being locked up for seven years, Pollis must serve 10 years of probation after her release and must report to jail for 15 days each year she’s on probation, State District Judge Jennifer Balido ordered. The 15 days include the three days around both Wallace’s and Solberg’s birthdays, Pollis’ own birthday, Christmas and the date of the tragic drunken collision.“You were so drunk and you wouldn’t admit it,” Solberg’s father Bobby said to Pollis during his victim impact statement. “You made us sit through this [trial] for three weeks.”“We’ve seen no personal accountability from you,” he fumed.Wallace’s father echoed similar sentiments when it was his turn, slamming Pollis’ “selfishness.”“You took the most precious gift from us through your selfishness,” David Wallace said. “Own it. Own what you did.”Testing showed Pollis had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.294% hours after the crash — nearly four times the legal limit for driving in Texas. Lynlee Pollis/FacebookPollis’ sentence was handed down Wednesday after the jury deliberated for around three hours at the end of an emotional two-and-a-half-week trial. The reckless driver was speeding at 67 mph in a 35 mph zone through a red traffic light in Dallas when she slammed into Wallace and Solberg’s vehicle, the outlet previously reported. Wallace, 19, was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Solberg, who was in the passenger seat, was left with a broken collarbone and traumatic brain injury.“You were so drunk and you wouldn’t admit it,” Catherine Solberg’s father Bobby said during his victim impact statement. Lynlee PollisA friend of the college students emotionally testified to the horror of seeing Solberg at the hospital in a neck brace covered in Wallace’s blood.“I couldn’t get the sight of all that blood out of my mind,” Haley Keller said. “Wherever I looked, I saw Honor’s blood all over CeCe.”Pollis suffered a fractured ankle and a bump on her forehead. She had her dog, a husky named Tequila, in the car with her, but the pup was unharmed. “This was no accident. This was no mistake,” prosecutor Andrew James said during closing arguments. “It was predictable consequences of the defendant’s choices.”Pollis was also ordered to serve 10 years of probation after her release and must report to jail for 15 days each year she’s on probation. Lynlee Pollis/FacebookBlood tests showed Pollis had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.294% hours after the crash — nearly four times the legal limit for driving in Texas. However, Pollis’ defense attorneys agreed that she was speeding and ran a red light but argued she was not drunk and that the blood alcohol evidence was unreliable because of issues with how it was collected, stored and tested. Her defense team asked the jury to give the now 30-year-old probation because she had no prior felony convictions — but James argued probation was “completely inappropriate” given her reckless actions.“Prison is where you put the worst of the worst,” defense attorney Scott Palmer said in his closing argument. “She is a good person who made a terrible decision. She is going to live in that hell for the rest of her life.”

Carole Radziwill racked up 83 traffic violations—and says every dollar is paid

It’s her big brake! Andy Cohen was left completely gobsmacked after spotting “The Real Housewives of New York City” star Carole Radziwill on the cover of Friday’s New York Post.“I had to go to Casa Magazines to see if it’s real. It’s real. I can’t believe it!” the Bravo executive said in a video posted to his Instagram Story Friday while holding an issue of the newspaper. Andy Cohen reacted to Carole Radziwill being on the cover of The New York Post Friday in an Instagram Story (seen above). “It’s real. I can’t believe it!” Cohen said in the video (seen above). The cover featured a glamorous photo of Radziwill attending this month’s 2026 Virtual Reali-Tea Awards with the headline, “Park Raving Mad ‘Real Housewife’ admits she’s biggest parking menace in NYC — face cones, expired placards, $8,000 tickets.” “Of everything happening in the world, Radzi’s parking is the most important thing in New York City,” Cohen laughed. “This is the most important thing.”He then poked fun at the reality star, calling her a “menace to the city,” before complimenting her photo. The Bravo exec (see here in September) was shocked that this story was the biggest news story of the day. Getty Images for SiriusXM“Of everything happening in the world, Radzi’s parking is the most important thing in New York City,” Cohen said, referring to the cover (above).“I can’t believe this is real. I just love it,” he said, before telling fans, “Pick up your copy today!” In a separate Instagram Story, he shared a digital version of the cover with the caption, “I cannot believe this is real.” Radziwill, 63, responded to Cohen’s video after it was reposted by the Queens of Bravo Instagram account, writing in the comments, “This is nuts! Dead. 😂”She continued, “Literally out here taking pictures with the traffic cops. I love them. I ♥️ NY.”Radziwill, seen above at Page Six’s “Virtual Reali-Tea” awards, responded to Cohen’s video Friday. Gregory Pace/Shutterstock“This is nuts! Dead,” she commented on his post. Madison McGaw/BFA.com / ShutterstockRadziwill also expressed her excitement over the major feature in an Instagram post Friday afternoon.“I’m on the cover of my hometown paper?! This is like a fever dream,” she captioned her post along with a photo of the cover.“I ♥️ the traffic cops. I ♥️my city and I ♥️ the New York Post. (Btw, I only overslept 17 times in 6 years? I deserve a 🗝️ to the city) Beep, beep, bitches. 🚗🚗,” she added. She ended her post by clarifying to the public that she has “paid every dollar of those tickets” and that she “stand[s] with the Dept. of Sanitation.” Radziwill (seen here in 2025) also celebrated the feature on Friday. Getty ImagesThe “RHONY” star (above) called the experience a “fever dream.” Charles Sykes/Bravo via Getty ImagesThe lead story, published by The Post Thursday, detailed Radziwill’s sneaky parking tactics and traffic violations.According to records, Radziwill racked up a staggering $8,000 in traffic violations in recent years — which she has completely paid off. She was also hit with 83 traffic violations over the past four years, with 17 dings for failing to move her car for street sweeping. She also admitted to using orange Con Edison traffic cones to save parking spots in the busy streets of NYC in this season of “RHONY.” The Post published photos of the traffic cones in her car that Radziwill uses to save parking spots (seen above). William Farrington for The NY PostThe Post also reported that she uses an expired FDNY union placard (seen above). William Farrington for The NY Post“The cone, yes. The cone. The cone is a cop family hack,” Radziwill shared in a confessional. “If I’m parked illegally or slightly too close to a hydrant, they will keep on walking.” The Post also revealed that Radziwill displays an expired FDNY union placard on her car’s dashboard, despite the permits being reserved exclusively for firefighters. The placard, which expired in February, belongs to a former president of the FDNY’s Uniformed Fire Officers Association, who last held the position in 2023.It is unclear how she obtained the cones or the placard and she did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
