Scott Hoying's Heartfelt Journey to Fatherhood: Meet Baby Birdie James

Scott Hoying and his husband, Mark Hoying, are celebrating the birth of their daughter via surrogate. “SHE’S HERE! WE’RE DADS! �� Our baby’s name is… ��,” the Pentatonix singer, 34, and Titanique producer, 35, captioned their joint Instagram post on Tuesday, June 23, revealing they decided on the name Birdie James after singing about the many monikers they considered. “She was born on June 3 and was given a name that is near and dear to their hearts,” Scott told People. “The first song I ever learned to sing when I was a little, little kid was ‘Put On a Happy Face,’ from Bye Bye Birdie.” The performer also noted that Mark's middle name is James, adding, “We wanted something that was musical, but not too on the nose. And we also just loved that it felt... Feels like it could work at any age.” Scott and Mark said they are over the moon that their bundle of joy has arrived months after Scott’s sister Lauren volunteered to be their egg donor. “I literally cannot believe how selfless she is. She was so passionate about doing it,” Scott gushed of his sister and about how he’ll be forever appreciative of her sacrifice. “I love my sister so much, and I cannot thank her enough for giving the gift of life.” Scott reflected on his life journey, revealing that he feels blessed to have found love and now be able to embark on the new chapter of parenthood alongside Mark. They previously released a gender reveal video in January, singing about what their child could be like in the future before confirming they were expecting a baby girl. Prior to welcoming a baby girl, the couple exchanged vows in July 2023 at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara, California. Their ceremony took place more than one year after Scott proposed in the Bahamas in April 2022. “It really was beautiful. It was this overwhelming flashback of all these memories growing up and being like, ‘Am I going to find love? Is gay marriage going to be legal? Am I going to be able to have a kid?’” Scott shared of his journey to parenthood, revealing, “The process of us having a child took four or five years.” Scott said he was overcome with emotions while meeting their daughter, admitting, “It's been a long time coming and just looking at her, I started crying because it was just such a beautiful thing that I feel really, really lucky.”

Mackenzie Shirilla's Case Gains Attention After Ohio Supreme Court Decision

The Ohio Supreme Court declined a request to review Mackenzie Shirilla’s post-conviction appeals after she killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend Davion Flanagan in a fatal car crash. Shirilla, 21, was found guilty of murder in 2023 following the deaths of Russo, 20, and Flanagan, 19, in July 2022. She was sentenced to two terms of 15 years to life in prison after prosecutors argued that she intentionally killed the two victims. In the recent filing, Shirilla’s lawyers said they requested the review due to a calendar mistake. Her attorneys missed the deadline to file a post-conviction challenge by one day, according to court documents viewed by Us Weekly. However, the legal team argued that they missed the deadline because they didn’t take into account that 2024 was a leap year. The Ohio Supreme Court announced on Tuesday, June 23, that they would not review the case due to the late filing and the fact “that the trial court correctly determined it was without jurisdiction to consider the petition,” according to Cleveland 19. Ohio law states that convicted defendants typically have 365 days after their trial transcripts are filed to challenge their conviction. Shirilla’s trial transcripts were submitted on October 23, 2023, meaning that the October 24, 2024, filing was more than 365 days later. Shirilla’s new attorneys filed another appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court on April 27, 2026, in which they argued that the deadline should be later because a separate transcript was filed weeks after the October 2023 record. The attorneys also argued that Shirilla would have been acquitted if she had received effective assistance of counsel during her trial. While explaining their decision, the Ohio Supreme Court pointed to jurisdiction and said that Shirilla’s lawyer’s arguments did not meet exceptions in order for them to conduct a review. In light of the conclusion, Justices said that the trial court lacked the authority to excuse the delay in the filing. Shirilla is currently in custody at Ohio Reformatory for Women and her first parole hearing is scheduled for 2037. Her case has gained renewed attention after she was featured in Netflix’s May documentary The Crash. In the documentary, Shirilla expressed remorse for the killings and insisted she never intended to kill Russo and Flanagan. Shirilla also speculated in the documentary that her diagnosed medical condition, particularly postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), caused the crash. POTS “is a condition that causes a number of symptoms when you transition from lying down to standing up, such as a fast heart rate, dizziness and fatigue,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. “While there’s no cure, several treatments and lifestyle changes can help manage the symptoms of POTS.”

The Vatican shut down German bishops’ bid to allow lay preachers at Mass, drawing scrutiny over ongoing tensions between Rome and the progressive European country.The Vatican’s Dicastery for Divine Worship and Discipline for the Sacraments announced Tuesday it had denied the German Bishops’ Conference’s March request to allow lay people to deliver a homily during Mass, even in exceptional circumstances.Sent to Bishop Heiner Wilmer, the president of the German Bishops’ Conference, the Vatican’s June 17 letter said it is “not possible to grant the indult requested” by the bishops, the dicastery’s press release wrote. As Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding day approaches, multiple sources have confirmed to Us Weekly that Swift’s once-close friend Blake Lively did not receive an invitation to the pair’s nuptials. “Blake understands why she wouldn't be invited and that it would be a media frenzy,” an insider exclusively tells Us Weekly. “She also understands that she and Taylor don't have the same level of friendship they once had. She isn't upset about not being invited, but of course, she would love to be there to support her and Travis.” Swift, 36, and Lively, 38, experienced a falling out after the pop star’s name was dragged into the contentious legal battle between the actress and her It Ends With Us director and costar Justin Baldoni. Lively and Baldoni, 42, reached a settlement out of court earlier this month, bringing their 18-month legal drama to an end. The insider adds that Lively is “at peace” with how things “played out” between her and Swift, noting that the Gossip Girl alum has “put that chapter behind her.” Still, the friends are taking space from each other. “They haven't been in touch in several months, and their last correspondence was only a few casual texts back and forth,” the insider concludes. “That is the extent of their friendship.” Us Weekly reached out to reps for Lively and Swift for comment. During Lively’s battle with Baldoni, which began in December 2024 when the A Simple Favor star filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the Five Feet Apart director, personal text messages between Lively and Swift were made public. A source previously told Us that the situation was “really hard” for Swift. “Having her texts out there made her feel exposed and kind of violated, like, something private suddenly wasn’t hers anymore,” the source shared. “That doesn’t sit well with her.” Lively’s lawyer Sigrid McCawley said in January that the actress has “done everything she can to protect her friends from not being brought into this.” “It was the Baldoni parties who brought that evidence into this case. It’s not relevant. What’s relevant is her claims that she was sexually harassed in the workplace and the witnesses are there to see that,” he said at the time. (Baldoni denied the sexual harassment allegations and filed a countersuit against Lively, which was dismissed in 2025.) Now, Swift is preparing to say “I do” to Kelce, 36, whom she began dating in summer 2023. The pair got engaged last August. While the exact location and date of the wedding have yet to be confirmed, Swift and her NFL star fiancé are rumored to be set to tie the knot during the upcoming July 4 holiday weekend. One popular theory suggests that the couple will wed at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Claudia Lemieux-Bishop, the daughter of late NHL star Claude Lemieux, shared an impactful picture from the day of her father’s burial.  “Buried dad in the mountains,” Claudia shared via her Instagram Story on Monday, June 22, alongside a photo of herself, her brother Brendan and his son, Luc, who was born in March 2025, walking together in a wooded area.  Claude died by suicide on May 28. His body was found by one of his three sons at a furniture warehouse owned by the family in Florida. He was 60.  According to his death certificate, Claude’s body was initially taken to a Stuart, Florida, funeral home before it was transferred to Henson Chapel Cemetery in Vilas, North Carolina. In addition to Claudia, 28, and Brendan, 30, Claude is survived by his wife, Deborah, and sons Christopher and Michael.  Claude’s burial came just days after Claudia wrote a poignant message about the loss of her father on social media. “Almost three weeks without you,” she shared via Instagram on June 16. “I still don’t have the words. It doesn’t feel real. I would give anything to have the chance to go back and tell you how much I love you. I miss you. Forever and always your only girl��.” Claudia initially broke her silence about the death of her father shortly after his body was found.  “No words to express the level of devastation we feel,” she wrote via her Instagram Story on May 28. “I love you forever daddy." Two days later, the entire Lemieux story issued a statement about Claude’s death, calling him “a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend and teammate.” "To the hockey world, he was one of the game’s most unforgettable competitors: a four-time Stanley Cup champion, a Conn Smythe Trophy winner, and one of the great playoff performers of all time,” the family said on May 30. “To his family, he was more than a hero: he was loyal, loving, funny, protective, and generous. He was stubborn, and he was completely devoted to the people he loved. He was adored by his family in turn.” The statement continued, “Claude was a passionate man. He brought that passion to the rink, to his work, to his friendships, and most of all to his family. He was fierce on the ice because he cared so deeply about winning, about his teammates, and about never giving less than everything he had. Away from the game, he was tender, loyal and full of life. He made us laugh, he showed up for us, and he loved his children and grandchildren with his whole heart.”
